About Mrs. Labrador

Source

Contrary to popular belief, wedding registries are not that much fun to put together. In fact, it’s a lot of work and it loses its novelty very quickly. I believe people get this confused with the actual bridal showers where you RECEIVE the gifts, not REGISTER for them. That was your PSA for the day. You’re welcome. ;)

Okay okay! I know not all of you feel the same way I do.

In fact, I was really looking forward to the registry fun when I first got engaged. So much so that I started on them about 3 weeks after we became “official”. This was done in part because I was afraid that when the time would come around to do this (according to a suggested wedding time line) I’d be too busy with finals or an internship. Boy, was I right! Our first shower is a little over 2 weeks away and I still haven’t done much more than what I did on that first day of registering. My FMIL had already gotten a couple calls about where we were registered BEFORE the shower invites even went out. Yikes!

The truth is, registries sort of intimidate me because I don’t really know what we’ll need or will really use.

It feels so “adult” to upgrade from our cheap silverware (and sometimes plasticware) to formal flatware or from busted pots to amazing professional cookware. Then there’s the fact that Mr. Lab and I have been living together for almost 2 years, so we already have a lot of things that are typical on registry lists. And the fact that our little rented house probably can’t hold all the items we’ll be receiving. But I know we’ll need all these amazing things once we move into our “real” home someday soon.

So here we aer rushing to fill out our registries and making sure we will really use whatever is on them. Mr. Lab and I wanted to keep them as functional as possible for us, so we didn’t include any china, etc. The hardest part now has been making sure people who live in the smaller towns will have easy access to our choices. We both prefer online shopping, but are keeping in mind our older guests who may not want to fuss with a computer.

Our final choices ended up being Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Dillard’s, and Amazon.com. Amazon can really pull through for those “odds and ends” items and regularly offers free shipping and no taxes, which is a big incentive for our guests to buy from them! Mr. Lab especially likes Amazon for all the tools he’s registered for that he couldn’t find in our other stores.

Did you find registering to be less fun than you thought it would be?

I’m sorry you’re not having fun with your registry! It’s been one of my favorite parts. ;)

I am glad to see someone using Amazon.com. The mister and I plan to use it for the same reasons– odds, ends, and a Wii :)

We are using amazon.com also. We are actually having everything shipped to his parents’ house, they have graciously allowed us to keep most of our gifts there in the basement while we live in our tiny manhattan apartment. In a couple of years when we move into a house, we’ll retrieve them. Unfortunately, they are a couple thousand miles away from us. We’ll have to ask them to open everything that comes after the wedding, for thank-you purposes. So we will even miss out on opening a lot of gifts. :( But the registry has been pretty fun. Amazon is nice now that they have a new universal registry, we were using wishpot before.

we just finished round 2 of our registry! we had the same problem, living together for 2 years, and being in our house for 1…so lots of stuff we have already…but we figure now’s the time to upgrade.

a friend of mine told me to register for really nice towels we’d never pay for ourselves…so we did that =)

The registry was a HUGE issue surprisingly for us. First, we didnt want one. We are fortunate to have all the bare necessities. We have a lot of out-of-towners coming to the wedding- and that is seriously a gift in itself to us.
But those who are even flying in, or driving in AND booking a hotel- really expressed disdain to the whole idea of how we weren’t going to create a registry. So we finally hauled our cute lil bums to Macy’s and Crate&Barrel and scanned in objects. But even that was horrendous!
Why? Because my fiance kept saying “But we don’t need more towels… we don’t need another set of bed sheets, we don’t need more of this or that- let’s scan this because it is on sale! It will be less expensive for our guests”. I had to keep reminding him, ‘just because we are requesting things- it doesn’t obligate anyone to buy it’. So it was an adventure none-the-less. :-/

I was really looking forward to registering, but when we actually did it….it sucked. I have to say I didn’t end up enjoying it at all, and I really thought that I would.

yeah, it was less fun and much harder than i originally thought! i thought we can go into the store, scan some stuff, and then leave, but we spent about 2-3 hours in each store. and, we never really thought about what colors we wanted for each room in our future house - we still live in an apartment - and just had to decide there. we only had a limited time to register items because i was going to be out-of-town for a few months before the wedding. and because of the economy the way it is, we were conscious to get items that we needed and our guests can afford. overall, it was pretty fun and we’re glad we finished it.

My fiance and I hadn’t really discussed what we were going to register for before we went to our first store. Huge mistake. We ended up fighting the whole time about incredibly stupid things. I found the process very overwhelming and stressful. I think we’ll have to do a bit more planning and discussing before we go to the next store.

amazon.com is great, specially now that they have gone “universal”…

We registered with Amazon, too. Love it. Reading reviews, especially for kitchen gadgets, was so helpful!
