About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

What? No Cake?!

June 6th, 2009 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

That’s right. Mr. Cowboy Boot and I are forgoing that tradition. “But what about the pictures with the cake? You won’t have those?” My mom asked when I told her. “Eh,” I replied, “neither of us really likes cake all that much.” Sure, I’ve loved the design of wedding cakes and even swooned over a few, but their aesthetic beauty doesn’t make up for their price tag–at least not at our wedding. But that doesn’t mean no one will be eating sweets after dinner.

In lieu of wedding cake, we’re opting for a seasonally-fresh pie bar, a la this picture:

Pie Inspiration Board by Ritzy Bee

Since it will be fall at the time of our wedding, pies and crisps will mark the season.

Apples, peach, cherry, raspberry, you name it, we’ll have it. Um, hopefully. We’re still waiting for our venue to get back to us with the catering contract so we can finalize prices and the menu. Until then, we’ll be dreaming about all of the various flavors of pie we can offer. To keep you drooling too, here are some fun inspiration boards that contain pie (all from Snippet & Ink):

Are you finishing off the meal with an untraditional dessert? How did you choose your sweet?

We are not having cake either we opted for cheesecake instead. : ) It will be cheaper this way. I love pies so I’m totally with you.

We’re doing a “dessert buffet” that will have some little cakes from whole foods/my will-be mother in law along with pies, crisps, candy apples, etc… etc…

We are doing something similar… but with cake, haha. I love the idea of letting guests choose what they want to eat. I definitely want to add some yummy pies on the buffet too!

Mmm… pie!

Neither of us really likes cake either, so we’re having ice cream cakes instead! We found a place that makes some beautiful wedding-style creations (rather than the Dairy Queen image that some people think of when I say we’re having ice cream!). It’s July and hot and I hope everyone will appreciate something nice and cold!

Aww yes. Thank you for not going the cake route! We explained to my parents and a few friends how we just couldn’t bring ourself to go with a cake. We don’t like cake that much. But it was hard for a lot of the ‘traditionalists’ to fathom us NOT going with a cake for the same reasons you did— “but what about the cake cutting pictures??? What about feeding each other??” All of which, the formalities aren’t really us.
We are going with an italian gelato ice cream bar. It is much more us… but my more traditional family members are still having a hard time understanding this ‘break’ from tradition.

We are getting married on FMIL’s birthday so will surprise her with a huge birthday cake. Since we don’t want to have two cakes and aren’t huge fans of wedding cakes (or the associated costs) we are having an ice cream sundae bar during dancing. I think it will be super fun!

Awesome idea! I LOVE cake (and my fiance doesn’t care either way), so we are definitely going that route. If I didn’t love cake, we wouldn’t hesitate to do something else.

Great minds think alike! We’re doing the EXACT same thing, for the EXACT same reasons. :)

One of our local restaurants has won several national pie contests, and we’re picking 10-12 flavors and letting our guests choose what they want. My fave is their Blackberry Sour Cream (sounds weird but it. is. soooooooooo. good!) and I can’t wait to have some!

This is what we are doing as well. A lady at my work asked me what flavor of cake we were going to have, and I told her that “we aren’t really ‘cake’ people.” She replied, “Well when I go to a wedding, I like to have a piece of white wedding cake.”

I love it when people make butchering the guest list easier…

My FI loves loves loves ice cream. I caught him the other night at 2am sneaking a bowl of ice cream! LOL So I’m going to do a huge bowl of ice cream And to go with our WWII airplane theme. I’ve found a chocolate airplane to sit on top instead of a cherry. Then I plan to have bowls of toppings with a similiar look to the candy jars/tables that are popular right now.

Just a thought to others, To help keep cost down on wedding cake I’ve seen people do fake layers of cake.

I think people will enjoy the nice change. Enjoy your pies :)

we planned a macaron croquembouche (think a ‘tree’) but nixed it due to the price. instead, we’re having individual trio of french desserts for our guests - millefeuille, creme brulee (4 flavors so guests will get different ones) and a chocolate eclair! yums!

We had wedding cake and a dessert table with chocolate fountain because it came with our package. I was going to have assorted pies to go with my BBQ dinner and country wedding theme. My cake was very yummy, but I would have loved the pies!

we’re going to serve pie, in addition to the cakes. What’s your favorite pie? There’s a delicious marionberry pie that a local bakery makes in oregon!

We’re serving cookies and milk instead of cake. yummmmy! Can’t wait! The venue is also serving cheesecake as part of their dinner service so there should be something for everyone.

how fun. we’re not cake people either, plus I hate that all the dancing needs to stop so we can cut a cake. Our venue offered butlered mini desserts. There will be mini milk shakes, cookies, brownies, and cakes passed like appetizers.

We don’t like cake, or chocolate! But we love fruit, so it’s cherry, blueberry and key lime pie! The special part is we are getting mini-pints of ice cream for everyone.
Even at the nicest weddings I’ve gone to, the cake is always so disappointing, go for something you really love!

Sounds delilsh! I’m picturing you and the mister sharing a mini tart, and, like holding it up and nibbling simultaneously off of opposite ends. Would be a REALLY cute picture. :-)

Oh…cobbler…mmmmmm….um please excuse me while I go to my kitchen to see if I have anything to bake!

yumm! I was going to do this also when we thougt our wedding would be in the fall. We still may do this with summer pies (lemon meringue, key lime, raspberry, blueberry, strawbwerry rhubarb, etc) depending on if our cupcake baker falls through.

For you- apple crisp, pecan, pumpkin, cherry pie, coconut or banana creme pie would be great… delicious!

i love it!
Mr. LL and I do NOT like cake at all and we aren’t serving it at our wedding!

We opted for a chocolate fountain in lieu of the cake and have heard some complaints that it won’t be enough, will be a messy disaster, and it won’t be a wedding without cake.

We are also have a huge candy buffet, and hoping that by injecting this very personal touch–people will enjoy it and still have a satisfied sweet tooth!

We got married on a ranch and had a table full of homemade cakes, pies, cookies, and old-fashioned candy we bought. It was to die for! Everyone loved it and had a great time. We didn’t “cut the cake” and I don’t think anyone missed it. Our biggest issue (since the wedding was at our home) was coming up with 15+ cake stands. I got creative and glued wine glasses to the bottom of plates! It looked old-fashioned and eclectic.
