About Mrs. Bruschetta

Not Much But the Kitchen Sink

June 9th, 2009 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

For two foodies, we own surprisingly few kitchen tools.

In the past, the mister and I needed to commandeer a kitchen — his mother’s, or my parents’ — when we wanted to toss together a meal. While this detail often meant we weren’t cooking together — or as often — as we’d have liked, with each workspace, we did have access to a variety of helpful tools and supplies. After we moved into our own apartment several months ago, though, the items in our culinary arsenal took a sizable hit.

Durable knives? Nope. Dependable cookware? Not so much.

Most of the cookware and cutlery we’re currently using require creativity (um, that eggplant’s much bigger than the flimsy plastic cutting board) and finesse (careful of the loose screw on the 30+ year old pot handle!) and although I’m certainly not complaining — we know we’re lucky to have inherited this motley assortment of bargain finds and hand-me-downs for next to nothing — I’m definitely looking forward to refining my techniques with tools that will enable me to improve my efficiency, and add to my culinary confidence.

Mr. Bruschetta echoes these sentiments, and so we’ve agreed to create registries focused exclusively on improving our current kitchen situation — and bearing in mind the future kitchen of our dreams. And while I swoon at the thought of my own KitchenAid, I’m similarly jazzed about many other items waiting patiently on our four wedding registries:

slice and dice

slice and dice by Whisked Away on Polyvore.com

Wusthof knives, and a cutlery block to keep them safe and secure;

(source)

an end-grain cutting board (or two);

(source)

fabulous All-Clad cookware;

(source)

the ability to have fresh basil — among other herbs — on hand whenever we please;

(source)

Schott Zwiesel titanium crystal glassware (which are all scratch, break and chip resistant — and gorgeous!);

kitchen wishes

and an assortment of other items that we will most definitely use regularly to perfect our favorite recipes, explore new techniques and cuisines, and entertain our loved ones!

Is your registry dedicated to one room or goal?

Hey Ms. Bruschetta!!!

I’m actually not registering, at all, but I’d like to add a kitchen must-have.

A magnetic knife bar. A MIU magnetic knife bar.

As traditional as the knife block is, over time, it can get icky and moldy and can block your precious counter space. (Four inches doesn’t seem much, but when you are dicing and slicing…..)

It’s a sexy piece and super practical. I sigh inwardly everytime I grab my OXO santoku for everyday cooking….

…and so is the Kitchen-Aid mixer! ^_^ Hope you get the wine glasses…a definite must have!

I highly recommend CutCo knifes. They have lasted me many years and are ready for their second marriage. Love those cutting boards.

I have a Cuisinart dual purpose blender/food processor and I love it! I use it all the time!

Blender uses: smoothies, blended rum goodness, salad dressings, even fresh whipped cream!

Food processor: grated cheese, chopped veggies, purees everything!!!

I am a big fan of making sure that you have tools that can multi-purpose and are really good quality so I don’t have to spend money replacing them often.

I’m from Philly, and broke out my new grill (finally had moved into a place with outdoor space) as soon as the weather got nice last year. My honey put some steaks on, I took care of the veggies, and then we tried to eat using the knives I’ve had since college. Ouch. They dented more than cut the meat. I never understood the appeal of “nice” knives (I grew up with them), but since then it went to the top of my gift list and I have been getting knives piece by piece from various members of the family for holidays/birthdays…

The kitchen will be the favorite part of my registry! I cannot wait to upgrade my kitchenware!

My mother keeps telling me we need to add non-kitchen items to our registries! But to tell you the truth, my fiancé is just as excited about the KitchenAid appliances, Calphalon cookware, and Noritake dinnerware as I am! (We did, however, just create a registry on Amazon.com for items like tools and drills and camping accessories — you know, more “manly” stuff!)

I LOVE love LOVE Wusthof cutlery. We’ve used other big name brands before but once you Wusthof, you never go back. =P
Have you checked overstock.com? They often have a starter set w/a block for minimal.
We have a very similar cutting block and oiling it really isn’t necessary. I recommend getting a sturdy “plastic” one for cutting poultry, meats, etc. =)
We have a whole bunch of hand me downs and have slowly started “our” ideal kitchen ware. I’m hoping to get a nice set of pots & pans on our registry and a everyday wine glass set along with a “fancy” wine glass set. hehe.

David Lebovitz just wrote an ode to his kitchen shears on his blog a few days ago (and I fully agree with him!), so I’m glad to see you have those on there! I’m also glad to see you have a food mill, because I actually use mine a ton.

Since you have a KA mixer on there, what about a pasta maker attachment or an ice cream maker attachment? I actually use mine all the time. Fresh pasta is really easy to make, freezes well, and tastes SO MUCH BETTER. And I use my ice cream maker for sorbets as well as ice creams. Just a thought!

One last thing — WS has a digital thermometer for oil and candy making that I can’t live without. When I tried, I burned my caramel sauce. =(

Oh, forgot one! The KA beater blade. You never have to scrape down the sides of the bowl again!

@moonie: Oooo, if Mr. Bruschetta reads your comment, he’ll start petitioning again to go the magnetic storage route. I agree it looks awesome!

@rebecca: We’re definitely doing the ice cream attachment…and might add on the pasta maker down the road — though I’m intrigued by the process of making pasta sans machine (and completely by hand). And yup, a candy thermometer is a definite must for us! Thanks for all the recommendations!

All-Clads are so amazing :) Also, we love our Shun knives…and (of course) the Kitchen Aid mixer! I would definitely recommend Shun knives though over Wusthof. I second rebecca’s suggestion also of a digital thermometer - I use mine all the time for meat so it stays juicy, but I know it is cooked.
