Dinner Music

June 10th, 2009 @ 12:04 pm by Mrs. Beagle

Lately I’ve started thinking of what types of music we would like to play during our reception. I’ve got our cocktail hour taken care of (and I promise to blog about it soon!), so now I just need to square away the dinner hour and the dancing that will follow. I recently became smitten with local Austin artist, Kat Edmonson (one possible factor might be that I hear her songs daily on KUT). Her new CD is just lovely. After hearing her songs, I envisioned our dinner with soft jazz playing in the background. This is a snippet from one of her recent performances in Austin:

The jazz theme has evolved into a folksy, “Austin” sound, but I would really like to include Kat in the mix. Now I’m considering an Austin/Texas music playlist and I just need to come up with other local artists. This one will probably make the cut:

Iron & Wine, ’nough said.

This is not necessarily a love song, but Carrie Rodriguez is awesome, and who doesn’t love the fiddle?

Here are a few of my concerns:

  1. I will probably be the only one who is aware that the dinner music is all local. I have considered making a cute sign for the buffet table or each individual table that mentions this to bring it to our guests’ attention. Is the time and effort really worth it, though? And does anyone else listen to the music playing during dinner?
  2. Is this range of music too broad? Do all the songs have to be mushy love songs?
  3. I’m probably over analyzing this whole dinner & music business.

Are you playing music during your dinner hour? Will it be themed?

Oh, and if anyone has any other artist suggestions, I would love to hear them! :)

This is a great idea! You could also consider explosions in the sky, the low lows, meryll, for those who know (not a band anymore) . . . Let me know if you want more local music recs!!

If you’re looking for some Austin artists, Carolyn Wonderland, Marcia Ball & Ruthie Foster are a few of my favorites. They’re a little more bluesy/folksy than jazzy, but I still think they’d make for good dinner music.

We’re looking for a good Austin mariachi group for our cocktail hour & dinner music. Or, I might go with a Spanish flamenco guitarist. Our venue limits us to acoustic music only :o(

This is something that I have started stressing about. It’s so hard to pick something that will meet a large range of tastes. Like you said though, you will probably be the only that even notices the music that night, sadly.

If you’re on the lookout for Austin musicians, I recommend Adoniram Lipton with Slowtrain. Very original sound–as with karilynn’s suggestion, they’re more bluesy/folksy than jazzy, but they’ve got a good sound. A lot of really pretty original songs.

Ruthie Foster and the White Ghost Shivers are some of my favs, as is Carolyn Wonderland! Marshall Ford Swing Band and the Monster Jazz band are also great for jazzy stuff. If you want something a bit more soul inspired you can’t go wrong with T-Bird and the Breaks too.

Hooray for Austin!

I think this is a great idea! Also, I pay attention to the music playing during dinner and I would definitely pay more attention if there was a sign telling me about the music :)
Our band is playing during our dinner - all Frank Sinatra :)

I love the idea of local artists, and I definitely think you should point it out to your guests with a sign. I would definitely appreciate knowing that so much thought went into the music, whereas I might not even notice otherwise. I’m a huge fan of supporting local artists and vendors, too, and I love to hear about other people who feel the same way. I’m sure your guests will appreciate it, and your local artists get a little shout out too!

@karilynn6: I looooove Carolyn Wonderland and used to see her almost every Thursday at Saxon Pub :)
@jooly: I love the White Ghost Shivers too! I forgot about them, but I will definitely put them on my list.

we have a jazz pianist. i’m giving her free rein after deciding that we like jazz classics, big band styles, evergreen and some improvised pop (jason mraz, norah jones, michael buble).

I am absolutely in LOVE with Carrie Rodriguez. Though I am “from” Austin (lived there for four years through college), I caught one of her songs on a radio station here in Pennsylvania (?!?). The song “Got Your Name on It” is absolutely captivating. If you haven’t heard it, you MUST!

Or you could always check out my ex bf’s band, Monuments. (ehh, j/k) ;)
