Post-Wedding Paperwork

June 11th, 2009 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Cheese

{And before you ask, yes, I promise I will post pictures — real pictures! — of our wedding just as soon as I have some and get my mind around how I want to tell the story. Really. I’m not planning to accidentally forget to give you proof that we did indeed have a wedding in spite of my procrastination and general unwillingness to do anything ahead of time. Pinky swear.}

So, along with the name-changing party going on around here (I’m trying to put a happy spin on it), we’re also buried under a mountain of post-wedding paperwork. Rather, I’m buried, since we long ago agreed that I’m the Paperwork Doing part of this couple and he’s the Dealing with Plumbing part. Fair, I think, though I still reserve the right to be resentful sometimes.

Whether or not you change your name, there are records to share, beneficiaries to update, and insurance policies to adjust. We all know that I’m no bastion of organization, but I don’t have to be. Trent over at The Simple Dollar has an astoundingly comprehensive Information Disaster Plan. Build the plan and you’ll soon discover what needs to be done post-wedding.

So far, I’ve updated the beneficiary on my life insurance policy, scheduled a meeting with the mister’s insurance agent to add me to his auto insurance, made plans to make him a secondary account holder to my savings and checking accounts (I have a billion of them), added him to my health insurance, ordered new insurance cards, scheduled physicals and dentals for both of us. My withholding was already at the married level, but his needed to be adjusted. None of that had anything to do with changing my name (which I’ll blog more about, don’t you worry).

We haven’t yet decided how (or when) to merge our finances, so in the meantime, adding each other to every account ensures that we don’t run into problems if either of us suddenly wins an all-expense paid vacation and can’t log in to the accounts (or goes to jail and needs bail money, but that’s not as fun to think about).

Do you have an information disaster plan? How are you handling post-wedding paperwork (or planning to, if you’re not married yet)?

In case you didn’t notice, there are no wedding pictures in this post. Please correct it. :D KIDDING, KIDDING.

Mr. Mary Jane and I are already each other’s beneficiaries, but like you, we haven’t done a ton with the finances yet. I plan to address the accounts once we’re married, but it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about it now!

We haven’t really combined anything yet. I’ve been hesitant to combine accounts until we are legally married. I worked at a bank for almost 10 years and saw so many things go wrong when people combine accounts (and don’t keep their own) when they are dating/living together. So we’ll wait until after the wedding. We’re going to open a joint checking and keep our individual accounts.

I love the Information Disaster Plan! I’m going to start putting one together. Thanks!

We’ve already done a lot of this stuff, since the texas requirements for common law marriage are pretty easy to meet. Technically I guess we’ve been “married” for about two years, haha. Still need to merge the finances, though. I’m dreading that.

Thankfully, we were able to take care of a lot of these things prior to being legally married though we don’t plan to combine finances unless one of us starts making significantly more money than the other (right now our income levels are pretty similar). We’ve lived together for three and a half years and where I come from, you only have to co-habitate for six months to be considered common-law. Plus, we moved in together upon buying our first place, so our insurance and various beneficiaries on our investments were designated to each other at that time. Just think, Cheese–you’ll get to do some of that stuff over again when you have children! Ha Ha!

@Brother of Cheese: LOOOOL!!
Hi, I’m 28 and still on my parents car insurance plan :-/ What? I pay for it, but I’m on their plan. I have USAA and we’re thinking about using them for our Mortgage, so I need to get on my own car insurance w/ them, so I can add him and we can apply for a Mortgage… So, we’re taking care of some of it now and the beneficiary stuff after the wedding.

Love this! I know my hubby will also since he’s Mr. Organized, so I can’t wait to show him the site you are referencing!

Totally unrelated question but I don’t know where to ask this:
Just wondering what has happened to the bolero now that the wedding is over? I’m looking for a beautiful piece just like this but have $0 money to spend…so I guess it’s pretty obvious what I’m getting at…wanna donate to a future bride???
