Mrs. Mouse's Picture
Mrs. Mouse, Austin Age and Occupation: 25, Weddingbee Editor/Attorney Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Civil Engineer Engagement Date: December 19, 2007 Wedding Date: September 2009 Venue: Barr Mansion About Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!

Save-the-Date With Style

June 11th, 2009 @ 9:27 am by Mrs. Mouse

So I think I’ve finally made a decision about what kind of save-the-dates to send out. This has been a tough one for us because originally we didn’t want to send STDs. (As high school health classes now use “STI” instead, I think we’re safe to use “STD” as the standard way to refer to save-the-dates.) I thought they were a waste of paper, and since our goal is to have a “green” wedding, the more we can cut out, the better. But I started to think about the fact that we’re getting married on a Friday evening, which means people will appreciate knowing the date in advance—especially if they need to request vacation time at work.

We’re definitely sending STDs now, but it took us a while to figure out exactly what we wanted them to look like. The Dude and I love music. Correction: I love music; he worships it. So what better way to pay homage to something we both care about than a music-poster inspired STD?

I love the simple layout of the one above–and isn’t that faded font cool? Let’s try something with a little more color:

I love the vintage feel of this next one:

This last one is sooo the Dude and me–well, except for that weird petrified rock thingy.

We’re probably going to make them ourselves on my Gocco, so the design will need to be simple. Luckily, the Dude and I have a friend who is pretty handy with Photoshop. We’re hoping to commission him to help design our STDs. Check out some of the posters he’s created:

Save-the-Date With Style : wedding save the dates M Ed5fc No way I could make either of those on a Gocco, but you can see how good he is at designing posters. Now we just have to ask him for this little favor–I think that’s a job for the Dude!

Can you guess what my original idea was for our STDs? I’ll give you a hint: it was incredibly nerdy.

wow, that last one is so cool!
we thought hard about cutting out the extra paper of s-t-d’s, but, like you, our wedding date(s) are atypical. Plus, we thought our family members would appreciate having a recent picture of us.

Just FYI - the petrified rock thingy is Red Rocks (a natural amphitheater in CO), where that concert was held.

Your inspiration is similar to ours. We actually commissioned a local gig poster artist to do our artwork. We already had a poster of his in mind that we loved, and we worked with him to alter it to our needs. It was perfect. Here’s the image he started with:

and here’s how we adapted it:

Mike was great to work with, but is pretty firm about not doing wedding invitations. I had to convince him that I was the lowest maintenance bride ever.

We went completely against tradition and sent paperless STDs to our guests. I think it would be awesome to check your email and find one of these beauties in your inbox! I LOVE the first one!

I am a Jr High Health Teacher and we still refer to the diseases as STDs– just a heads up, for your younger and mid-twenties guests you may receive some snickers if you call your save the dates that…interesting and unique save the dates though!
