About Mrs. Swan

Absolutely Fascinating

June 12th, 2009 @ 1:54 pm by Mrs. Swan

I am like Miss Mary Jane. Wearing anything on my head sort of weirds me out. I was kinda dead set against any kind of veil when I first started planning my wedding. You remember when that David’s Bridal consultant put a veil on me, right? I’ve never been someone who wears hats or baseball caps primarily because they just don’t fit over my hair in its current or past versions.

I was definitely looking for an alternative to a veil and then was inspired by homegirl, Keisha over here:

I don’t think that everyone can pull off a fascinator, but why not try it?

I liked the look because to me it seems to free you from the constraints of a veil if you’re not sure about the tradition. At the same time, you gotta be totally diva-esque or just plain confident to pull some of these off. I wasn’t completely sure if I fell into this category, but I started to do research… gotta love the research!

Like I said, I feel like ya gotta be extra diva for something like this one:

Cosette headpiece of Feathers & Frills of Etsy

I so wanted to be one with this headpiece/fascinator because it’s just so fresh. Alas, there were too many feathers involved for me. I can’t put my finger on it, but I’m not totally attracted to feathers. Plus, I think that this would look great with an extremely simple dress, and while mine comes close. I think this piece would have been a bit much. I could totally see this with a short, simple dress.

These two from Artikal below are fun and tres modern, but again I was feeling the “I need to be able to pull this off” pressure.

I can easily say that I was in some serious love with this dramatic headpiece from Portobello.

I love that this is both simple yet intricate all at the same time. I love the pearls and rhinestones (although I don’t have anything remotely close to a pearl anywhere in my wedding outfit). I decided against this headpiece in the end, but someone please get this and show me pics!

What do you think I should look for in a headpiece? What do YOU look for in a headpiece?

It’ll look so haute on you. You look high fashion anyways =]. And you did NOT look pleased with the veil, lol. If it’s not too big I think you’ll be comfortable. What about a hair comb? I really love that last one you posted.

The last one is my fave! So classy!

I think it’s really up to you and what makes you feel comfortable. I’m against a veil but Mr. Lab loves the tradition of one. So I’m compromising by wearing a veil for all the photos and possibly the ceremony, then switching to a fascinator (I didn’t know they were called that before this post) for the reception.

Twigs & Honey has some really simple and elegant ones on Etsy! They do custom orders, too!

I worked with Portobello for my wedding headpiece- she did it custom and exactly to my specifications! She also made pieces for my girls that had no jewelry attached, so they were a little more subtle. I highly recommend working with her!

I hear ya on the feathers! Feathers a defiantely a very popular bridal trend right now, and fascinators are growing in popularity too! I also spent a lot of time looking at fascinators of various levels of quality and ended up making my own in the end! I wore mine on the side of my ‘do, so I couldn’t really see it. Because I couldn’t see it or feel it, I wasn’t self conscious about pulling it off.

Also, don’t be afraid to go with the unexpected–the reactions from my guests were super fun!

I love that last one!! Yes someone buy it and wear it so we can all see it!!! It is very beautiful. im not loving the tiaras myself…the lady at the bridal shop put one on me and I hated it! Im thinking a veil in the back of my head…not one that poofs up like the 80s wedding style either! And maybe a little flower or sparkly clip…something simple…esp now that Im thinking of wearing my hair down. I dont like the feathers too much either…esp the really thin ones…I like the thick ones that actually look like feathers from a bird…here are a few I love…

good luck on your hunt! :) PS I think you’ll look beautiful with a flower.

I’m so excited because 1) Keisha’s wedding was photographed by my wedding photographer, Allison Britton, and all the pictures look amazing! and 2) my hair piece is also by LoBoheme off Etsy, the same woman who did hers. I worked with her to design a custom piece - it’s symmetrical with ivory feathers and a vintage centerpiece of pearls. It took her about a month, but when I got it in the mail it was even more perfect that in the photos! I’m wearing my hair half up and half down so it’ll be perfect to add interest to my do after I loose the veil following the ceremony. Even if you’re just looking for ideas, you should check out LoBoheme’s sold items for inspiration bc she has lots of different shapes, textures, colors, etc.

i think maybe NOT the twigs&honey ones. i think you should go for something sleek/elegant rather than cutesy/quirky.

maybe something with a metallic accent, but clean lines?

Those are great. I’m not a veil bride either. My lovely bridal consultant asks each time, because I think she desperately wants me to wear one, but I won’t. I’m shooting for something simple like a flower or jewel. Maybe a fascinator, but it might distract from my dress.

i wore this one to my wedding, except it was custom made with pinky leaves to match my theme, made by ’superduper’ on etsy here:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=22122719

it was just the right size, not too big, just tucked into my hair. and really easy to use!
