About Mrs. Labrador

I received my Fiori Belli silk peony stems earlier this week and finally had a chance to play around with them today!

My first impression of them was slight disappointment. I made a trip to Michaels to scope their floral section before deciding on fakes. The ones at Michaels felt more “velvety”, like a real flower. But they didn’t have cream-colored peonies (neither did Hobby Lobby) so I decided to go ahead with the online order. After a while, the stems began to grow on me. They look real but are just missing that velvet feel. But I knew I had to sacrifice something when going with fake flowers. Now that I’ve done the trial, I’m in LOVE. Here’s the result of my first trial with my bridal bouquet:

But let’s take a moment to rewind and start from the beginning. The process of assembling the bouquet was ridiculously easy. Here’s how it all went down!

First, I made a quick trip over to Michaels (with my 40% off any item coupon in hand) and purchased my supplies for less than $10:

Don’t forget the most important supply!

The first step was removing the leaves. This was simple because they slide right out of the stem (upside of fake florals!). If you’re using real flowers, you’ll have to trim the leaves and thorns off (if applicable).

Next up was the assembling. I followed this video tutorial and wrapped the floral tape tightly around 3 stems at a time starting with the fullest blooms. Keep repeating the process by filling in the holes with more stems until you reach your desired bouquet size.

Before I knew it, the assembling portion was finished! I then moved on to covering the floral tape with my champagne-colored satin ribbon. I inserted the pins at an upward angle. Thankfully, this is a trial DIY, so no need to worry about the pins not being perfectly lined up… or the fact that I forgot to tuck under the raw edge of the ribbon… or how I didn’t pay attention to wrapping the ribbon evenly… or, well, I think you get the picture. Lessons learned. BTW, 1 yard of ribbon is probably all you’ll need. I purchased 3 yards not knowing how much it would take but ended up almost double-wrapping my handle with just 1 yard.

I could have paid more attention to keeping the head of the bouquet more “round & balanced”. Again, lesson learned on that one. Plus, I had to keep the stems long because I didn’t think ahead about how I was going to deal with the thick wire inside of them (downfall of fake florals!). FMIL’s beau is bringing some wire clippers over tomorrow for me! :)

Being proud of my creation, I took MySpace-like photos of me & my bouquet in the mirror. I think it’s just the right size and combo of cupped and fully blossomed stems!

The only thing I’m longing for now is the scent of fresh flowers. But FMIL suggested just buying a peony-scented perfume to spray on them the day of the wedding so I wouldn’t be missing out completely.

All in all, I’m very pleased with the DIY fake flower bouquet and am pretty much convinced that I will do the same for my bridesmaids’ bouquets. Now that the trial is complete, I can focus on perfecting the bouquet by fixing my mistakes, finding a way to beef up the handle size, and adding details to the handle. So stay tuned! And since you’ve stayed with me up to this point, here’s a sneak peek at my inspiration for the handle:

The bouquet looks great- I think the full & cupped combo is key for keeping it au natural. :)

I did fake ones, too! Cream and blush colored flowers were way easy to come by. I got mine at Michaels and my mom whipped them all up. We used richer pink peonies for the men and a cream one (sorry, they had cream peonies at my Michaels!) for my FI and they look AMAZING! We didn’t know about the stuffing-the-stem though. I tied a bouquet charm around them to hide them. Still, I love that they’re done and i don’t have to stress!!!

I’m not a fake flower bride… but right about now I’m reconsidering! I want to do fresh for the centerpieces, but I love the bridal bouquet… especially in the pix I would have NO IDEA. Able to get those gorgeous peonies for not even close to the cost of the real ones! Good job Miss Lab!

Your peonies look great! Thank you for this post — I’d love to have peonies in my wedding, but it may be too late in the season to have real, now I know I have this option!

Those flowers are gorgeous!! You did a great job of wrapping them. Just out of curiosity - how much do fake flowers cost vs real flowers? That is, if you bought real flowers to wrap yourself (not what you’d pay for someone to arrange them for you.) Any tips would be appreciated!

I did fake flowers — or rather, my mom did. They ended up awesome. We just hit up Michael’s and JoAnn’s and every time we saw stuff in my wedding colors in the 50-75% off racks we snapped them up. :) We ended up with three big roses as the centers (antiquey-looking gold, deep red, and copper), and they were surrounded by cascading cream freesia and ivy, and then she filled in the gaps with some copper hydrangea. She did the same thing on a smaller scale with my MOH’s bouquet, and then I made little bouquet gems inspired by Mrs. Flamingo’s for both of them. I really have no idea how much they ended up coming to since mom bought some flowers and I bought others, but I’ll bet for both our bouquets and all of the other personal flowers, it was less than $75
I wish this was a closer picture (After like, 30 minutes of tinkering I realized the best photo program I have on this computer is Paint… lame), but this is how they turned out: http://picasaweb.google.com/bykes187/UntitledAlbum#5346641169324552706

Three things:

1. Those look absolutely phenomenal!
2. What a thorough and clear tutorial!
3. I wish that I had your boobs. Nice work on that.

THOSE LOOK BEAUTIFUL!! One good thing about fakes is that you’ll still have your bouquet in all its glory even after the wedding unlike real ones. I wanted to save mine and preserve it but it was going to cost a few hundred$$ so I just dried them.

Wow, your bouquet looks beautiful! You’ve definitely made me a believer in faux flowers and I’m now seriously considering using them for my bouquets. Plus, it’s more eco-friendly!

Are you planning on using the same style of flowers and color for your bridesmaids’ bouquets?

Fake flower bride here!! We got about 7 different kinds and I’m not sure what types they are but they fit the color scheme perfectly. We got way more than we’ll need for about $100, and we plan on incorporating them everywhere so we can use them up!

YAY! Miss Lab we’re bouquet twins! I bought those same poenies from Fiori Belli - 6 cupped and 6 full bloom and I looooove them. Can you please let me know what you do to get the stems a bit thicker? I want a thicker part for that too. My florist said she’d wrap them up and do all that for me, but I kind of want to DIY my own bouquet.

Ahh, a girl after my own heart. I <3 peonies like whoa.

These Look Fabulous with a capital F! I read your post awhile back about using faux peonies from Fiori Belli, so I checked out the site… if I’m not able to use real peonies, I’m totally going to send more business their way.

I don’t think there’s any other flower that feels more romantic, dreamy, and ethereal. Gorg, girl! I’m happy for ya!

That bouquet looks so beautiful! I think opting ofr fake peonies is a good idea since apparently they are a very expensive flower!

I am not having fake flowers but thought about it long and hard. The ONLY reason we didn’t end up going with silk flowers is because the venue that we booked the wedding at throws in fresh florals. Otherwise, I would have gone that route.

just add the stems that you clip off with the wire cutter to the handle to bulk it up. that’s what florists do with real bouquets too.

Thanks for all the love hive! This is my first “real” DIY project and I think I did pretty well considering that. Now I just have to perfect it!

@Kelly: It’s called Joyful Julianna! I love it!

@Miss Calculator: I just know that peonies are out of season in November so there’s pretty much no use in trying to have them shipped in from out of the country on my budget. They’re already about twice as much as roses while they’re IN season as it is. :(

@lucysanchez & nicolejaxon & Miss. Peach Green Tea: Fiori Belli. It’s linked at the top of my post if you wanna visit their site!

@December: Those look great! It’s cool that your mom helped out so much. My mom wouldn’t know how to do crafty stuff if her life depended on it! haha

@Lexatron & jmc: Haha, I keep telling everyone how much I swear by Victoria’s Secret’s Body Bare collection! Who needs augmentation when amazing bras like these exist?!?

@sal75: That’s the best part of fakes! They’re going to be our living room centerpiece after the wedding!

@Golden139: I’m still working on that. Not sure what I want to do for the BMs bouquets. I’m thinking of colored (deep red) flowers but not sure what kind. Suggestions are welcome!

@MrsSl82be: Whoa. Good deal! I’m guessing my BM bouquets will be WAY cheaper than mine.

@Miss Hot Sauce: Don’t blame ya! I would take the fresh flowers given that situation!

@Andrea: THANK YOU!!! Why didn’t I think of that myself?!? Glad I still kept all the stem leftovers.

@AnnieAAA: 6 cupped stems and 6 fully blossomed stems. So you’re right with 12!

@purpleHaze79: I couldn’t remember where I found that tutorial! So if you’re the one who linked me to it, thanks a bunch! :D

Getting Down to Business. » Weddingbee » The Wedding Blog

[...] I want to maximize my time spent in my wedding city, so I’ve made a list of to-dos MUST-Dos while I’m there. The plan is that by the time I start my last semester of classes (finally!), I will have very few things left to do with the wedding, so I can focus more on school, Mr. Lab, and pre-wedding festivities (bachelorette party!!!). And of course, while I still have a bit of summer “free time”, I will begin/finish work on my DIY projects like the centerpieces, doggie table numbers, photo slideshow, and bouquets. [...]

I read about you trying to make your handle bigger you can achive that with a paper towel roll. Or you can use the extra stems, however makesure that if you use the extra stems that you make them go all the way in the bouquet so the flower heads will hide them.Best Wishes to you and your future Husband!
