About Mrs. Yorkie

Remembering & Honoring

June 12th, 2009 @ 6:16 pm by Mrs. Yorkie

As I sit here at the dining room table, trimming, gluing and tying our programs, I can’t help but think of everything that’s brought me to this moment in time. I’m not talking so much about the journey that Mr. Yorkie and I have shared for the past three years which, believe me, has been amazing. What really makes me well up right about now is thinking about the generations and marriages that have preceded mine.

Abuela & Abuelo Yorkie in Cuba, 1947

I think about my four grandparents who will not be physically with me on Saturday. (They’ll definitely be in my heart and on my mind, though.) Most recently, my family lost Abuela Yorkie last August. I swear I can still hear her familiar refrain “Una sonrisa es una arruga menos”… or “every smile is one less wrinkle”. She would constantly remind me, “Yorkisita, don’t worry so much!” I credit her live-in-the-moment example for my relatively calm approach to planning this wedding. Oh, how I wish that she could be here!

In an attempt to honor Abuela Y (and all of those from whom Mr. Y and I have descended), we’re working a number of details into the special day.

To start, I’ll be wearing Abuela Y’s antique white gold and diamond drop earrings. They’re gorgeous and match perfectly with the rest of my wedding day accessories.

In addition, Mr. Yorkie and I will be toasting with the exact same etched crystal coupes that Abuela and Abuelo Y sipped champagne from on their wedding day in 1947. Here they are, decorated by Momma Y with bits of lace from my dress.

As I’ve mentioned before, both of us have done a bit of research on our family histories. We will be displaying some of the treasures we’ve unearthed over the years during our reception. Each of the 16 tables will feature a different last name found in either of our family trees, as well as a photograph of those direct ancestors. Here you can see a photo of my great-great-grandparents, displayed in one of the vintage-looking frames we’ve collected, along with the table sign. On the back of the sign is a brief biography of the family.

There are a few other lovely things that we have in the works, but I’ll have to share those with you in a future post. The programs are calling my name!

What kinds of special details will you be adding to remember and honor those who came before you?

I love those earrings! Gorgeous. I think we’re having photos of our parents, and grandparents at the sign-in table as a tribute to days gone by. Enjoy those programs!

oh…wow… i love the ways you are incorporating you family! I lost my grandmother last May, and I am lucky enough to have the lace from her wedding dress and am hoping to make it work into my veil.
The table names and pictures are great ways to bring your families past into your future– great post!

Love the earrings!! I actually bought a antique pair that look a lot like them.

We are using my grandma’s white Bible that she carried at her wedding for a reading. I am really happy to have something that reminds me of her there.

Aww Yorkie I love all these details to remember your family. How great is it that you have those earrings and the etched crystal coupes that they used on their wedding day. I have a pin that was my grandmothers (my father’s mother) its her name and my middle name Marie! Im going to pin it to my bouquet…and Im still waiting for my mom to find something that was her mothers. I dont have any of my grandparents…I saw something on tv of a grand daughter showing her grandpa her dress and I just cried! My fiance has his grandpa (his mom’s dad) and his grandma (his dad’s mom)…I think Im going to need something that was his grandmothers too. Thanks for always sharing Yorkie! I cant wait to see Wedding pictures!

You are honoring your family with such grace. And grandmothers hold a very special place in my heart - and so do people like you who pay tribute to them this way! My own grandmother passed away a few years ago. I was able to tell her I had met a “special someone,” but they never got the chance to meet. We will be honoring her on our day, and I know she will watch over us at the wedding and always….

Yorkie I love this post!! Your ancestors will be so proud to look down on you on your wedding day and see how you incorporated your heritage into your wedding. We’re getting married in a place where my grandparents, parents, and uncles got married, I can’t wait! I’m hoping to be able to find as many pics as I can, unfortunately my grandma’s house caught fire several years ago so we lost a lot but I will def make due with what we have

What a great way to celebrate a family and its history. My father has also done a lot of research on our family and doesn’t it inspire you to be a better you? It makes you not only want to be successful for yourself but to somehow honor their spirits. At least that’s how I feel about it.

I love the way you are incorporating the past into your wedding. You won’t have to worry aobut the something old!

I’m using etched wine glasses for my toast also. They were a wedding present to my mom’s parents and my mom and dad used them on their wedding day also.
