I’m happy to report that after some thought and a visit to the jewelry store, Mr. Mary Jane is much closer to making a decision about his ring!
When we entered the store, we were armed with a printout containing all of the rings I showed you in this post. We spoke to the jeweler together for a few minutes, and then I left to go get my hair cut. When I returned 45 minutes later, Mr. Mary Jane had narrowed down his choices to two rings.
How did he choose these two?
First of all, he and the jeweler spent a lot of time looking through the various catalogs and ring styles. The jeweler also had helpful advice about what to expect from various ring styles. (For example: a thick ring with side grooves like this one may get snagged on things. [Granted, don’t most ladies’ rings have an easily snagged setting? Of course, but we’re ladies. Guys don’t want to deal with that crap. :D]) Mr. Mary Jane also asked the jeweler about uniqueness. What rings were most commonly purchased? He didn’t want to have a ring just like everyone else’s.
The store went ahead and ordered a ring very similar to the more “traditional” looking one on the left, above. We aren’t committed to buying it, but it’s on its way. Meanwhile, we got a quote to custom-design a ring similar to the one on the right. It costs twice as much as the other one (as expected), but when it comes to our rings, Mr. Mary Jane and I don’t consider price to be a major factor in the decision. Whether they cost $100 or $10,000, they’re forever, so it’s worth it.
Though we’re still at least a week out from the arrival of the ring the jeweler ordered, we’re already leaning toward the other one. It’s so much more unique and interesting. And since we’d be having it custom-made, we can alter it in pretty much any way we please.
I had a little fun with Photoshop to help Mr. Mary Jane visualize some options:
The left picture is from here; I used selective coloring to change the colors for the design on the right. Mr. Mary Jane isn’t sure whether he wants more yellow gold, or more white gold. He likes how sleek the 2/3 white gold option looks, but appreciates the fanciness of the 2/3 yellow gold one, too.
Since Mr. MJ is open to a little bling on his ring, I also did my best to mock up what it would look like with some tiny diamond accents. Again, this is all from the same source image; I just “drew” in some diamonds. I did it for both color combinations:
The verdict is still out on which ring he’ll choose, but we’re definitely leaning toward one of these custom renditions. Which color combination do you like?
And would you consider custom-building a ring for your Mister?
