A Song From Family

June 15th, 2009 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

The planning of our ceremony has been a bit piecemeal. A little bit here. A little bit there. So far, we’ve nailed down the box idea (no pun intended) and are on the hunt for the perfect box, wine, and stationery for our love letters. I know exactly what song I want to walk down the aisle to (more on that later) and who will play it. Besides that, I only have one other detail figured out.

But, a little background first to explain why it’s important to us: I come from an extremely musical family. My grandfather was a composer who moved to the states from Austria during World War II and won the Oscar for the soundtrack to the 1960s film Exodus. My grandmother was the singing voice for many a movie actress in quite a few classic movies (Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), but she was also an actress in her own right; She played Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music. Here’s a quick clip of my grandmother’s accomplishments. You might recognize a few:

At my parents wedding, my grandmother sang Ave Maria from a balcony high in the church. She did it a capella and my parents loved it. While I’d love for my grandmother to sing at my wedding, she doesn’t have the voice capacity she once did. Sure, she still performs on Broadway occasionally and she was touring with her one-woman show based on her life a few years ago, but her voice is starting to age and she often takes parts of older characters.

Of the three kids that set of grandparents had, my mom (the middle child) did not receive the musical talent of the other two. That said, she was courageous enough to sing You Light Up My Life to my father at their reception. The two other kids–my uncle and my aunt–both have musical talent bursting out of them. My uncle wrote the theme to Golden Girls, while my aunt can sing gospel like nobody’s business. Thus, we’re trying to find a song for my aunt to serenade us with at the ceremony. It will be a capella as well.

Here’s what we’ve come up with so far. Keep in mind that my friend can accompany her on guitar.

I’m kind of loving the Patty Griffin Heavenly Day song. Not only is it already accompanied by a guitar, but it’s so sweet. Alicia Keys’ Lovin’ You might be too hard a capella, Tracy Chapman’s I Am Yours is a bit depressing, and Wild Is The Wind is a song I’m not familiar with. My aunt suggested it but it’s not striking me.

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

Wow, your family sounds absolutely amazing! I just can’t get over it! I loooove West Side Story and the Golden Girls theme song is classic!

As a magazine editor, I know you have a way with words, but do you yourself have any musical capabilities?

Wow. Your grandmother has a spectacular voice. Having a degree in music myself and growing up listening to these songs, it’s wonderful to learn more about the woman behind this beautiful voice.

I freaking grew up learning soundtracks to your grandma’s voice! She’s one of the reasons I’m a music theatre performer. AMAZING.

I am so impressed that it is your grandmother’s voice I have tried to copy all these years! (My Fair Lady is one of my all-time favorite movies).

I agree with you, I’m liking Heavenly Day. It seems perfect for your day.

I think it’s a beautiful choice.

I’m sorry, I have no suggestions, I just think it’s freaking AWESOME that your grandma is Marni Nixon. What an incredibly beautiful, memorable, and emotional moment it must have been when she sang your parents down the aisle! Oh my.

Now that I’ve calmed myself from the musical talents of your family haha…I listened to all the songs and my favorite for a wedding is Heavenly Day. Although Nina Simone is classic, Tracy Chapman is mellow and Alicia Keys is nice, there’s just something about Patty Griffin’s song. How wonderful that your aunt is going to sing–I’m sure she’ll make any of the songs sound perfect for your wedding. :)

Your grandma is MARNI NIXON?? That is sooo cool! I’m a huge musical geek, and I have always loved loved loved her singing — I always wondered why she didn’t just get cast as the leading lady for so many of the parts she sang, because her voice is just so amazing. Wow. I’m really geeking out right now. :)

I am still stuck on your grandmother’s voice was Maria!

Okay, two of my favorites that we will have are “Dream a Little Dream of Me” and “Today I Met the Boy I am Going to Marry”.

Have you thought about doing a musical, keeping with that talent in your family?
“As if we never said goodbye” from Sunset Blvd. is wonderful! Or “Take me as I am” from Jekyll & Hyde.

Okay, maybe I am NOT much help!

Marni Nixon?!!?!! Is your Grandmother!?!?!? That is… AHH! How cool! I have always thought she has one of the most interesting, yet underplayed stories from the Old Hollywood era. Let her know she still has fans in the ‘young crowd’. :)

I love the song “Wild is the Wind” but I think it would be a little out of place at a wedding. It’s so beautiful but SO melancholy (not to mention it was the song in the preview for Revolutionary Road and that has to be the most depressing book of all time.)

In other news, YOUR GRANDMA IS MARNI NIXON?! Holy cow, she is completely amazing (along with your other ridiculously talented family members!)

Aaargh! I’m such a musical junkie so I’m completely blown away by this. Marni Nixon??? OMG. And your Uncle wrote the Golden Girls theme? I’m sure he knows this, but I honestly think that is one of THE best tv show themes of all time. So lovely, so catchy, so heart-warming. Sometimes I just play the mp3 on my computer just to hear it, and I always bite my fist when Bea Arthur does! Haha.

Ok, I’m rambling, but you are my new favourite Bee, cos I’m a suck-up like that :-) I played Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music at school, but I can’t say I dubbed voices for Audrey frikkin Hepburn and Deborah Kerr and Natalie Wood…wow.

Do you have a musical talent too?

I have to repeat everyone else and say- holy cow I can’t believe your grandma is the voice behind so many of my favorite musicals! She is amazing!!

I also want to cast my vote for the Patty tune. I love it and it is on my reception playlist. I also just love Patty in general- she could sing the phone book for a whole album and I’d probably buy it.

Broken record, but holy smokes! You have one incredibly talented family! That’s quite exciting, and I’m very sure your mother is talented in her own way, too, even if it’s not music. I’m with Golden139 — are you musically-inclined as well?

Heavenly Day, absolutely!

Hi there,

I know all about your family because I was your grandmother’s ghost (co-author) on her wonderful book I COULD HAVE SUNG ALL NIGHT.

So great to hear you brag about all of them, including your brilliant composer Grandfather. I met your mom. She is wonderful.

@Golden139: @Ruby Slippers: @Kiley: Oh, geez. I wish I was as musically inclined. Unfortunately, I would be booted off American Idol and probably end up on their audition episodes where you’re meant to laugh at the people auditioning. Haha. I have a mediocre voice, play a little piano and guitar–that’s about it. :)

I’m having a Miss Cowboy music infused wedding without even knowing it until today! I’m walking down the aisle to “Heavenly Day” (so clearly that’s my vote!) my fiance’s mother is singing “One Hand, One Heart” (just like her mother did at her wedding) and, since the fiance and I are huge TV watchers, we’re doing our bridal party entrances to theme songs– The Golden Girls theme for my bridesmaids and Mad About You’s “Final Frontier” for my fiance and I.
Who knew there were so many connections!

Omg, omg, OMG!!!!!!! Your grandmother’s voice is truly incredible! My Fair Lady has been my favorite movie since I was a little girl! (I’m even hoping to somehow incorporate a cello piece of “I Could Have Danced All Night” into the wedding). I also love The Sound of Music, West Side Story and The King and I. A number of years ago when your grandmother’s story became public knowledge (after years and years of being told she couldn’t tell anyone SHE was the voice behind all those faces), I was so happy for her. Finally, she was able to take credit (all be it way late) for the incredible work she had done! Anyways, I’ll stop gushing about her voice now. :)

Wow, that’s quite a family you have. My family is similarly ridiculously musical, but unfortunately not in a way that would get any of us famous. Sigh. Still though, that’s pretty cool.

Afraid I have no suggestions though, just wanted to add to the chorus of “OMG MARNI NIXON OMG OMG”
