About Mrs. Bear Cub

Shoes. OMG. Shoes.

June 16th, 2009 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Bear Cub

I’m not as obsessed with shoes as Kelly is, but I’m definitely particular. Most strappy heels don’t really appeal to me, and 90% of the time you’ll find me on the streets in some mod ballet flats.

When I bought my dress last year, I had a month to buy my wedding shoes for my fitting (I had to finish my alterations before the move!). That meant I had to get some shoes, and I had to get them fast. Luckily, J.Crew is always there to help a sistah out. Even luckier - her ugly stepchild eBay is always willing to cut you a black market shoe deal!

I’m short (a whopping 5’2″), and the Mr. is nearly 6’, so I definitely needed a shoe with a heel. The J.Crew Hadley d’orsays were simple and effective - just what I needed! And at a steal on eBay (even less than this listing!), I considered my shoe case closed.

A girl is never “done” with buying shoes. No. It just doesn’t happen.

When I got the heels in the mail, they were great. They were fine. They hurt. I’m a little granola, if you haven’t picked up on it yet. Heels are beautiful, but I just don’t know how to walk in them!

I do, however, know how to dance in them! ;) I took some salsa lessons a few years ago, and Mr. Cubbie thought it would be awesome to do salsa as our first dance! You need heels to dance salsa - you’re on the balls of your feet 100% of the time. I’m actually more likely to trip while dancing if I wear flats!

Then again, we are getting married on dirt. Heels and dirt are the biggest frenemies at a wedding! I could wear heel stoppers, like Miss Lab, but I could also trip while I walk down the aisle. (For some reason I’m only coordinated when I concentrate really hard. Go fig.)

I settled for buying a cute pair of brown suede flats (thanks again, ’Crew!). I had my dress hemmed for the heel height, but right now I’m planning to wear flats down the aisle.

And then I saw these:

Jeez lil’ miss ’Crew - why you gotta keep tormenting me with all your stylin’ stems??

Since my dress looks like this, I thought the little flowers would look oh-so-dainty peeking from underneath the fabric. But at $125 (even on eBay!), I don’t know if I should chance this buy.

How many times did you second-guess yourself on shoes? Do you have any shoe recommendations for a short, clumsy, dancing, fashion junkie?

Miss Bear Cub, have you considered wedges or platforms?

I was wearing the teeniest heels I own (chunky, maybe half an inch), and fell flat on my face not once but TWICE at a wedding I was at on Sunday (thankfully, not during the ceremony or recessional!!). It made me rethink my choice of heels for the wedding.

My recommendation is to make sure the shoe fits correctly - I discovered, without stockings, those heels are slightly too big, tripping me up royally. Also, check out gel insoles, and wear them around a bit, before the day of, to make sure you get used to them.

I agree, you should test walk some wedges.
However, you have some CUTE options!

Oh beautiful J Crew heels, why must you be so uncomfortable?? I love all of your shoe choices… and I second the idea of gel insoles. I am currently crushing on J Crew’s Kendra patent t-strap sandles in champagne. They have a bit more of a substantial heel, which I think will hold up great on the grass for my outdoor wedding.

Oooh, I love the sparkly silver flats. I hope you can find them for cheaper! I’ve gone through several rounds of shoes myself. In fact, I haven’t settled on any yet.

Hi! Love your blog and LOVE shoes. I work at The Left Bank Jewelry in Chicago…We totally have the BEST new product four outdoor wedding heels, they’re called Solemates and they slip over the heel to give you awesome support and help you NOT slide into the dirt. I wore them as a BM and loved them.

It’s funny - I had the same (& original!) pair picked out for months…then changed my mind! I then proceeded to purchase many, MANY shoes until I finally found what I liked.

They were much cheaper than my original pair, so I patted myself on the back for finding them, rather than chastising myself for being so shoe-crazy! :)

I am 5′4″ and an expert high heel-er :) but I still wanted a kitten heel for my wedding bc my lovebug isn’t super tall, he’s 5′10″ (just for one day I wanna be a shorty!!)…so I bought a pair from JCrew as well! Teensy kitten heels are HARD to find, and I scooped them up ASAP. They only came in silver or gold, but I really wanted COLOR. I can’t find any suitable replacements at all, so I am also struggling with my choice! I guess at least I know I have something that is *close* to perfect? arggg….

I love the 1st pair & the last. (I dunno about silver though.) The brown flats are cute, but not too weddingish. What the hell is that video?!–Kelly makes me want to buy shuss (shoes)!

[...] the kicks, at first I had no idea what Mr. Bear Cub should wear. I have enough trouble finding my own shoes, let alone his! I certainly don’t know anything about “wing tips” or whatever [...]

Love that horrible video.

You know, I’m not a heels kind of girl (I always end up barefoot by the end of the night), but I need some height for my dress and found the perfect shoes- and they’re ballroom dance shoes! So comfortable, and so fun! Honestly I couldn’t have found a better pair to fit the vintage feel of our wedding, and I can’t encourage brides enough to make sure they’re comfortable during the long day. These baby’s are going to do it for me!

Surprisingly they can be rad looking too, check them out here:

See?! Go for comfort.
