Yummy Honey

I have been in love with these flavored honey favors for a while now. They’re from a company called Bee Raw Honey, based out of New York. They come in all kinds of delicious flavors, like cranberry, wild raspberry, and orange blossom. While I would love to give them as wedding favors, they are a little out of my price range. Rather than sit and mope about how much I wish I could have these little guys, I decided to make some of my own!

Here’s the plan:

First, I bought some test tubes off of eBay. It sounds easy enough, but the Dude and I spent about an hour and a half trying to convert various test tube measurements (in millimeters, no less) to liquid ounces so that we could make sure the test tubes would be the right size and hold the right amount of honey. I wanted the tubes to hold about one ounce of honey, as that is what the ones in the picture above hold. For the record, I ended up buying test tubes that are 16 millimeters across and 100 millimeters long. I think they’ll end up holding about 2/3 of an ounce. The elusive one-ounce size was 20mm x 125mm. As soon as the test tubes come in, I plan on looking around at different cork options to see what will fit best. I may end up buying them at a craft store or on Ebay. The corked test tubes above are sealed with beeswax–how cute! I will look into that option to see if it’s a possibility. Instead of having words carved into the cork, I think I will add recycled paper tags on string to each tube of honey. I may buy some off of Etsy or I may make my own. Maybe I could even Gocco them!

Finally, the most important part, the honey. As part of our eco-friendly theme, I need organic honey (though I have a feeling that most honey is organic). I plan on buying some honey in bulk from a local harvester/grower/beekeeper (whatever they’re called), and then filling each test tube with the honey. My FSIL scouted out a local honey farm here in Austin that sells organic honey with different flavors native to this part of the country, including a wildflower flavor. I’m excited to buy some bulk honey and have some left over to eat on toast and in my oatmeal. Yum!

I’ve also got a really cool DIY project in mind for the extra test tubes and corks. I may have time for it before the wedding, but I may have to get back to you guys on that afterward!

Were there any favors that you loved but were out of your price range? What did you do?

Flavoured honey is tasty! =) Are you sure that the test tubes didn’t also advertize their capacity in mililitres? That seems so weird that they wouldn’t…at least that would have been a little easier! (It’s times like this when I’m glad I grew up in Canada with metric!)

That sounds like such an awesome favour! Are you serving tea at your wedding? It would be cool, ’cause then they could put the honey in their tea. =)

That’s so cool! Can’t wait to hear more :)

Do you have to sterilize the test tubes?

I’ve thought about doing cute honey favors myself, so I’m interested to see how your experience goes!

We live in FL but are getting married in PA. I am filling and decorating 72 2.5 oz jars with Florida Orange Blossom Honey. It is our way of bringing a little taste of FL to the wedding!

My friend put native Florida honey in small jars at her wedding. Those were definitely my favorite wedding favors ever.

Thunder Heart Bison, in Austin/ San Antonio, sells some really great honey. You could contact them and see if they would sell you some honey in bulk.

That’s a really cool idea, wish we had thought of that when we were getting married. Found this featured on a page of eco-friendly wedding favor ideas at simplyweddingfavors.com.

Awesome idea! This website has vials with that can stand on their own and have corks included - http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=12 (they do list both capacity and dimensions). I bought clear top tins from them for our favors and they have lots of fun containers. Great… Now I am thinking of adding honey to our favors :D

The only favors I’d ever care to give are way out of my budget so I decided not to do favors altogether.
