Dress Fitting: Part II

June 17th, 2009 @ 3:47 pm by Mrs. Glitter

I am finally back with the second half of my dress fitting story. Sorry it has taken so long! The wedding is less than two weeks away, and I’m swamped with errands. Anyway, when I last left you (Part I), I had my first dress fitting with a very questionable tailor. As many of you noted, I should have stormed out after the tailor’s first, second, or third insult. But, in my defense, I was kind of stunned. The next part of my story is kind of embarrassing. I have struggled over whether to share it, but I figured, why not?

Immediately after my bad fitting, I started questioning my dress. Was it too plain? Not formal enough? I even got online and began stalking other dresses. A couple of days later, I did the unthinkable. Late at night, with a guilty conscience, I put in a bid for a dress on eBay. I never thought my bid would actually be accepted, but of course, I won.

A minor bump in the road had quickly metamorphisized into a dilemma involving insecurity, indecision, and dress jitters. I didn’t have the time nor the money to be having this meltdown, and I still feel bad that I had it (hence, the feelings of embarrassment). But luckily, as soon as I put the second dress on, I felt like I was cheating on my first dress. I fell more in love with my original dress and my mind was set right pretty quickly. In retrospect, I think strangely I needed to go through the whole “second dress ordeal” in order to truly appreciate my dress. I immediately knew what I had to do.

(By the way, the eBay dress was bought very cheaply and I hope to resell it. Fingers crossed!)

I marched back to the tailor’s shop and picked up my dress. I took it back to the store where it was purchased, and told the store owner about my situation. She immediately offered to do my alterations. I ended up having a fabulous dress fitting. It went the way fittings are supposed to go, and quite surprisingly, the alterations bill didn’t do as much damage as I thought it would. You might be asking, “Why didn’t I go to her in the first place?” I originally didn’t use her as my tailor, because I worried that I would be paying an arm and a leg for alterations at a dress shop. I guess, in a way, my desire to be frugal got me into this mess. Hey, you live and you learn!

Have you ever had dress jitters? Did you actually buy another dress, like I did? If so, did you go with your original gown, or the new one?

Oh, no! I’m so sad that you had such a tough time because of one jerky tailor!

I’m sure you’ll sell the second dress and you’ll look amazing in your dress. Glad this story has a happy ending :)

Yes! Lately I’ve been wondering if I should have actually gotten the short dress I’d dreamed about… but since I can’t afford to get another dress I learning to get over it and stick w/ my lovely already purchased dress :)

Oh how frustrating! It must have felt nice, though, when the second dress affirmed for you that your first pick was, in fact, the right one!

Congrats on loving the dress! Do you have a classifieds link or a picture of the less-loved dress? I’m curious (read: nosy!) and also thinking the same kind of thoughts about my dress..

Yay you! Good job on getting your dress back from that first idiot - no tailor like that should be getting your business, let alone on something as important as your wedding dress.

And don’t feel too bad about your ‘moment of weakness’, I think we’ve all had them. I felt so unsure through the whole dress process … I think the problem is, if I ever have doubts about anything, I talk to my (now) husband about it. Having to make all the dress decisions ‘alone’ because of the surprise element was no fun!

Anyway, glad it worked out, now enjoy your wedding time!

I probably wouldn’t have been able to stand up for myself at first, either, so I understand about your insecurity after the first jerky tailor! I’m glad the second dress gave you your confidence back!!!

I bought a second dress and I still love the 2nd dress more than the first!! Fortunately I was able to explain my situation to the place where I bought the first dress, and they have credited me the amount of my deposit that I can now use for bridesmaid dresses.

The first time I went dress shopping I took pictures. BIG mistake. When I got home everything that I loved didn’t look that great in the pictures and vice versa. When I found my dress I didn’t let anyone take a picture of me in it, but I am still second guessing whether I made my choice too soon. My dress is supposed to be in next month. Fingers crossed that I’ll still love it :)

For me it was not the dress but the veil I am second guessing. I just picked up the dress this past weekend and took pictures as I try to figure out the jewelry. Now as I am looking back I am wondering if the veil is to much. I have a lot of beading on the dress and the veil has an inch or so of lace at the edge and it only goes to my butt. I am seeing all these lovely long simple veils and I am second guessing mine now. I got upset last night after looking at pictures. But the veil was a lot (mom paid) and I feel I cant return it now. Sigh

Thanks for the support, ladies!! I spazzed out about my dress, which was awkward. But in the end, it’s all good :) For any of you questioning your dress, I feel your pain. Best of luck, and go with your gut!

Good for you! Though I had doubts, I just let them slide. I still think my dress was just okay, but it was the entire look, not just the dress that was important. I think your style via your hair, your make up and veil will create the magic, bonus that you feel confident about the dress. I know you’re going to be beautiful in it!
