About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

A Registry of a Different Sort

June 18th, 2009 @ 5:25 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Much like The Bear Cubs, we, The Cowboy Boots don’t really need all that much stuff for our house. We’ve lived together for over three years at this point, which means we’ve made numerous trips to Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, and many other home goods stores throughout the course of our relationship. True, we don’t have much furniture (we rent a partially furnished place) but we don’t expect our guests to buy us expensive things—I mean, they’re traveling all the way to Colorado for our wedding.

So, we put in for a few things on Williams-Sonoma (we’re big into cooking), Pottery Barn, and Sears. You know, a toaster here, a shower head there. Mainly just little things that would make our lives that much better.

And while we never got the luxury of going through the store scanning things (does that sound fun to anyone else? It does to me!) because we registered online, there is one store we got to handpick our items. Mr. CB’s parents’ gallery. That’s right. They own a gallery in Upstate New York called Gallery Three, Two, One. With one-of-a-kind crafts, gorgeous pottery, and other goods, it’s like a treasure trove when I’m in there (not to mention the jewelry). Here are a couple of the items we registered for:

A pottery bird feeder

Royce Yoder Dinner set

Beyond house goods, though, Mr. CB and I talked a lot about registering for a home down payment. Money towards a house is more valuable to us than curtains and bedspreads. But we couldn’t figure out how to do this without going through a website that takes a percentage of the gift. There’s FeatherOurNest.com which requires $200 to create a registry and makes you pick out a house and work with a real estate agent almost immediately. We’re not quite there yet.

OurWishingWell.com is another option–you can register for general things like a “digital camera” instead of, say, a Leica D-Lux 4. Or a “home down payment fund”. It’s kind of nice that you don’t have to pick out the exact stuff you want in the midst of wedding planning. The downside? There is a “small transaction fee when you withdraw” (i.e. the website takes a percentage of your gifts).

In the end, we opted for Honeyfund.com. A honeymoon-specific registry that acts in a general way like Ourwishingwell. For instance, we registered for “Horse-Trekking” with no specific outfitter, or “Wine Tasting” with no particular vineyard in mind. You make up the amounts, how many gifts of that amount you need, and you get as specific as you want with each item. The closer it gets to our trip, the more specific our listings might become when we know where we’re staying or what restaurant we want to eat in. Our gifts range from increments of $25 to $100. And guests can buy as many or as few as they want. Take a look:

We didn’t ditch the home down payment fund altogether, though. Check out the final item on our honeymoon registry:

What unconventional registries did you use? Do you think they’ll be successful?

@Miss Burgundy: Its the amount of each item they want

I think we’re going to use honeyfund for our house down payment too, since we already have money for the honeymoon

@Miss Burgundy: I think that means the number needed and number purchased, like in other registries. But looking at the math now, I’m not so sure…

Oh, I see where I got confused, with the house down payment they would need 999 $50 contributions. Wow, sorry my slow math skills had to be displayed on here for all to see. ;)

Does honeyfund take a percentage like ourwishingwell.com does?

@Miss Burgundy: The numbers are “how many we need’ and “how many are left to be purchased”.

@MissBookworm: Honeyfund takes nothing! The money goes straight from your guest into your personal PayPal account. The only slight charge would be from PayPal when your guest uses a credit card.

What a great idea to take a site like Honeyfund and make it your own.

We want to do a honeymoon registry too!

That’s great that they don’t take a % of your gifts. We were going to use travelersjoy.com because they take the lowest percent I could find (7%). I’m so glad you found Honeyfund. We’re totally switching! Thanks!

My friend used honeyfund and loved it! She and her husband took really good notes while on their honeymoon and so were able to write really specific, super sweet thank you notes. They also tried to include a picture of themselves doing the activity, which I think people genuinely appreciated.

We used wishpot.com and it was great! I love your cute descriptions about the items, it makes me want to give you a bottle of champagne, because I know you’ll drink it at sunset and enjoy it :)

W ended up using OurWishingWell.com for our wedding registry. We found that Honeyfund did not provide us with enough flexibility - for example, there were not enough payment methods available (to help our guests) and the guests were limited to purchasing items for a specific amount. OurWishingWell.com has a lot more payment methods and it had the flexibility to allow our guests to provide any amount they wanted. I can definately recommend OurWishingWell - you can see some of the testimonies for other people here:

Your descriptions are great! I think it makes it that much more meaningful for the guest to know that when they buy you that bottle of champagne, they can picture you drinking it at sunset (like when they buy you a pot, they can picture you cooking your husband dinner in it)

@Julia: Yep. You just transfer the funds into your account at any point. You can transfer them all at once (and leave them in PayPal for as long as you want) or transfer them little by little. When you set up your PayPal account, it makes you link it to a bank account so when you’re ready to transfer, they already have all the info they need.

I looked at the websites of W/S, PotteryBarn,
and I see you have huge items on there as
part of your bridal registry, like $1899 chairs;
two of those. Don’t you think this is a little
much to ask of your guests if this is a destination wedding? Also, I did the numbers
and the honeyfund really adds up; like the
999 x $50, that adds up to a lot of money.

@Miss Bear Cub:
You can, just go to http://www.strongstone.com and e-mail the owners (my mom)! They can set up a registry for you if you want.

guest,

Often, couples will add items to their gift registry in anticipation of taking advantage of the 10% completion discount you can use after the wedding on all registry items that weren’t purchased. Not sure if that’s the case here, but that’s what I would think, if I saw something large on a registry.

Also, I’m assume that “999″ is probably the maximum number set up in the honeyfund. I think setting it at the max is a lot less awkward than setting it to a specific amount, like $10,000.

Miss CB,

You might want to also think about setting up a second $25 option for “Our Nest”– I know if I were getting a gift, I might do one of the larger honeymoon items, but then want to add on a little “extra” for the house. Would also help for guests who want to get you $75 or $125, etc…

@guest: you get a discount on registry items post-wedding that weren’t purchased.

@guest: We’re loving the idea of possibly purchasing items off our registry after our wedding at a discount. That said, we’re not expecting anyone to buy us the higher-priced items at all. We just put them on there as something that we like. But we won’t be disappointed in the least if we don’t get them. Does that make sense? We’re hoping people contribute to our Honeyfund more so than buy us home goods, anyway, and we have tons of $25-$60 items on there.

As for the Nest option on our Honeyfund, I actually changed it to a max of 60 last night before reading your comment. Funny. But, again, we don’t expect to receive even 60 of those contributions. I was just giving that item a sort of limitless maximum, if you will.
