Saving Up

June 18th, 2009 @ 12:20 pm by Mrs. Joey

Mr. Joey and I have been saving up for the honeymoon. No, I’m not talking about saving our pennies (though we are saving those, too). I’m talking about gathering up things to do during out LONG flight to Sydney. An 18+ hour journey for me is pretty normal, but for Mr. Joey, I worry. The 5 hour flight from NYC to Seattle drives him crazy, so I can only imagine what the flight from LA to Sydney will do.

I’ve started saving magazines when they come. We get a good range of them—Sunset, New Yorker, Esquire, Outside, Readymade—so I’m good on that front. I just need to keep myself from reading the occasional article. We plan on making a stop at out local Goodwill. They sell paperbacks for $0.79, and you can always find something good there. I always stop at the Goodwill to buy books for a trip. I don’t feel so bad leaving a $0.79 book on the plane or in a hotel.

The other thing we’ve been saving up are podcasts. I listen to news programs on the way to work most days, but on Monday evenings, I have the pleasure of listening to This American Life. I think I really like the show because I feel like it’s entirely possible I would hear someone I know on the show one week. Heck, I could be on the show. If they ever do a show on kidnapping capers in a foreign country, I’m their girl.

It’s been really hard not to listen to the show, but I’m doing my best. I also like Stuff You Missed in History Class. Mr. Joey has also been saving podcasts. He’s got a nice collection of Car Talk and NPR: All Songs Considered he hasn’t listened to yet.

Right now we don’t have nearly enough to listen to, but we have time to save up. We’re trying to avoid current events, since we read the paper almost daily.

Any suggestions? What is your favorite non-video podcast series?

I love This American Life too! My other favorite podcasts are the Moth (short stories - many are funny, some are sad, almost all of them are good!) and the Slate Culture Gabfest and the Slate Political Gabfest. Those are more time-sensitive though, so you might not want to listen to them a month after they come out. I highly recommend The Moth though! Great for a plane ride.

Oh, I remember trying to prepare for the long flight from London to Sydney. Can’t remember exactly what we did, since it was a long time ago now, but I know good books are a must (I’d recommend something cheesy like Harry Potter or Twilight, where you can really get into the story).

Make sure you take a comfy change of clothes with you as well - some soft sweatpants and fluffy socks will help you get comfortable, and then you wont be getting off the plane in the same clothes you’ve been wearing all day.

Of course, it would also be a great time to get some of those thank you cards out of the way! :)

A podcast that I enjoy (and is very fitting for a long flight!) is Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase. She is a good storyteller, and is always bubbly and happy, as you’d expect from a flight attendent. I hope you give it a try!

This is a short podcast (and a total plug for an old internship..), but Kinsey Confidential. It’s sex-related questions from the people at the Kinsey Institute. Good stuff.

@Miss Cowboy Boot: I just read something you wrote the other day! I love Outside even though I’m not as outdoorsy as I’d like because of the knees. :)

The PRI podcast of Selected Shorts is fantastic. It’s an hour-long weekly show hosted by Ira Glass and each show has a different theme. Short stories are selected and read in live performance by professional and often famous actors. It’s really great. The Fresh Air podcasts also often have great interviews and are more feature-y than hard news.

Oh! When we go on long trips (mainly car trips), we check out books on CD. Sometimes we’ll put them on the iPod to make it easier. It was lots of fun listening to the Bourne series . . . and Harry Potter . . . and Jeffrey Archer. We simply check out the cds from the local library. Putting all the books on an iPod makes packing really easy! No extra weight.

Oh, and we save Frank DeFord’s sports commentaries for car trips too.

I save up my Say’s You! and A Prarie Home Companion episodes for when we go on long trips! They are both easy listening - careful though, you might find yourself shouting out answers to Say’s You on the plane!

This is totally random but I was lucky enough to go to Australia for Warren Miller promotions and wow are you going to have an AWESOME time! Make sure you get “NO JETLAG” pills before you go, you can get them online or at most health food stores. The packaging is from like 1970’s but boy do they work. My friend who lives in New Zealand told me about them and they are awesome!

Definitely consider books on CD to put on your ipods. When I had a long commute I abosutely loved them…you can even check some out from the library.

And I don’t know if you are a game person, but you could probably play Banagrams on a plane…or one of the many travel versions of games out there!

So, this isn’t a podcast, but a book recommendation, perfect for traveling: “Three Weeks With My Brother” by Nicholas & Micah Sparks. Yep, THAT Nicholas Sparks. But this one is non-fiction, and it’s a story about he and his brother Micah’s three week trip around the world, as well as their life journeys. Great read.

And High Five for Click & Clack! I love “Car Talk!”

I LOVE PODCASTS! We seem to have similar tastes (I’m also a huge fan of TAL and Stuff You Missed), so here are a few more you might like:
-Escape Pod and Pod Castle are sci-fi and fantasy short stories, respectively
-Stuff Mom Never Told You is also from How Stuff Works, like Stuff You Missed, but it’s about various sex/gender things
-Radio Lab has already been mentioned… it’s *great.*
-Speaking of Faith is a public radio show about religious issues - usually it’s an interview with someone who has interesting things to say about faith & spirituality.

My suggestions: ESPN Sports Guy, the podcast from Deadspin - a.k.a. Deadcast, the Adam Carolla podcast and the Bill Maher show from HBO that comes in audio and not video.

I love Fresh Air on NPR. Though I usually just listen to it on my car radio. For some reason I can’t get into the whole “podcast” thing. I need to step into 2009!

My fiance and I are total foodies, and we love APM’s “The Splendid Table” and KCRW’s “Good Food.” Always fun to listen to!

definitely agree with radiolab, says you, wait!wait! and the moth podcasts. TED talks can be downloaded as podcasts - a very wide range of engaging, interesting and inspiring speakers.

If you like some history, Dan Carlin does two podcasts, one political, one historical. He is insightful and intense. His political podcast is current politics but he really bases his opinions on US history and explains why our government makes decisions the way they do. He has some great hour long shows, although I’ve come across a few topics I don’t care much about. Check it out. Oh, his history is Hard Core History.
