Take a Look at This Junk!

June 18th, 2009 @ 12:46 pm by Mrs. Bunny

Following my resolution to make do with what I’ve got and not spend more money on wedding decor, I came up with these:

Take a Look at This Junk! : wedding decor diy reception Cookiec

They’re a variation of Junk Camp’s stamp photo holders, found here.

I chose to use these cookie cutters because my mom and I both have a ton of them and I wouldn’t have to drill holes in them to accomodate the wire. After the wedding we can remove the wire (which is simple, thin gauge copper wire we had in the garage) and they can go back to being cookie cutters.

I used Ki’s method of wrapping the wire around something to make those perfect rounds — though I used a thick stick of sunblock instead of a sharpie to make bigger loops.

Appropriately, I’m thinking I’ll use these to hold signs with the names and descriptions of each type of cookie at our cookie bar.

I still don’t know how we’ll display the cookies, though.

In jars, like so?

Or simply stacked high on plates and trays?

Of course, if I chose jars, I’d have to borrow them from somewhere, since I’m not allowed to buy them.

Plates and trays it is! I’ll see what I can scrounge up from my mother’s kitchen cabinets.

If you had a cookie bar, how did you display the goods?

That’s a good idea. I like the jars, but the platters look good too. Having the descritions held up with your creations will fit in perfect too since they’re cookie cutters.

I loved the display of cookies on shot glasses of milk that Mrs. Pineapple posted: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/06/17/if-you-give-a-guest-a-cookie/

Your table will look infinitely better with dimension! Gather shoeboxes, giftboxes, even phone books, place these under the tablecloth for a multi-level dessert table. The effect is much more beautiful than a flat table display. I’m a vintage lover, so I adore your cookie cutter card holders!

Love the cookie cutter card holders. I would vote for plates and platters, and cake stands. I think it gives it that shappy chic look. I think you could probably use baskets as well. Baskets are things that I know for me, they seem to collect faster than I have a use for them. So there would many different sizes that people have laying around. And…they could also house things like silverware, napkins, etc.

I am doing a cookie buffet. I have recruited close ladies (my mom, mil, sil, 2 bm) to bake them all and for their time I am purchasing different cookie jars. I am hunting at antique shops, garage sales, and thrift stores to find them! Good luck!

The platters will be much easier for people to get their cookies from any how! I agree that adding some varing height to the platters will give it some more pizazz!

If you have children in attendance I recommend something that will keep little fingers, coughs and sneezes off of the cookies before it is time for people to take them. Even with platters I recommend tongs for serving.

The cookie-cutter place card holders are adorable! I think the cookie jar idea is cool, but less practical. Cookies always crumble when you put them into jars! I think you could pull off a mismatched shabby-chic meets anthropologie kinda vibe by scrounging up a mixture of plates to put them on.

I think everyone agrees that trays, cake platters, etc would be more fun. plus, it makes it easier for everyone to get the cookies out. Maybe even use some cookie or chip tins?

I dreamed of having the jars on my dessert buffet at our wedding, but we ended up using vintage plates and silver platters and gluing them to old candle stick holders and it still looked great! Seeing all the different cookies and desserts piled up was appetizing enough, and it was much more accessible. SO glad we didn’t spend $150 on jars. I used E6000 glue to attach the candle sticks to the bottom of unique vintage plates- it was a very economical way to have cake stands. Even the cheapest ones are expensive when you want to use them in bulk. Signs are a fun creative addition!
