The Perfect Dress

June 19th, 2009 @ 4:52 pm by Mrs. Mouse

I’m not sure when, but at some point I decided that for the Dude’s and my engagement shoot, I must have the perfect 1950s-style red dress. I started off by searching online for hours on eBay, Amazon, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Target, and, of course, Posh Girl Vintage. I even trolled Etsy, but every time I typed in “1950s dress” the results were just too overwhelming to search thoroughly. I was having absolutely no luck!

Sometimes I envision a certain item in my mind to the point where it is so specific that it will probably never be found. Kinda like searching for a needle in a haystack!

This is basically what i had in mind, but with a fuller skirt:

I had started to give up on finding this mystical dress. Then, with what must’ve been a stroke of genius, I decided to try Etsy one more time, this time using the keyword “rockabilly”. It totally worked! It pulled up a ton of handmade fifties-style dresses—a better selection than anywhere else I’ve looked online.

After finding some “maybe” dresses that looked very similar to my vision, I stumbled upon this.

Adorable, no? My jaw practically hit the floor. I had to have it!

This dress in particular comes from a seller called Miss Brache. You can see her Etsy store here. She makes several other cute vintage-style dresses, as well as other clothing items–even swimsuits! She makes the dresses in sizes 0-24, and her store tells you exactly what the specific measurements are for each size. Alternatively, you can just give her your measurements, and she’ll custom make a dress to fit you! I took advantage of this option, as I always have the problem of clothes fitting too loosely on top.

Unfortunately, the dress didn’t come with the belt, so I had to grab one at Target.

Tip: when shopping for a belt like this, make sure you can get it tight enough around your waist—some belts are made to fit around your hips, and they will be really loose if you try to fasten them around your waist. I had to buy two belts before I found one that worked.

What does your perfect engagement shoot dress look like? Do you have a favorite source for vintage-style dresses?

I love the red dress!
We are still picking out our locations so I think I will plan the outfits once the location is set.

I love that dress! It’s so hard to find waist belts! I am thinking of raiding a kids department next time I need one because it is just impossible!

Miss Brache made my wedding dress and all of the bridesmaid dresses! What a small world. =) She was an awesome person to work with. She lived 10 minutes away from me, so I got to meet her in person and she’s awesome.

I love the shoes that model is wearing in the first pic. They are exactly what I’ve been looking for for my wedding. Anyone know where I can get a pair like that?

I’ve had some cool find at the good ol’ thrift store. I love a good thrift trip.

I am pretty sure I have adored every outfit Charlotte Charles wore. RIP Pushing Daisies!!!

@Andrea:

Andrea, I’m trying to find a pair of red shoes similar to what Chuck’s wearing in the first pic, too! If you find some, please message me! And I’ll do the same for you. Maybe someone here will recognize it.
