About Mrs. D'orsay

Since I recently made my first fitting appointment, I realized I needed to get cracking on finding all the “underthings” for the dress. First stop? Shapewear.

I had been recommended to Trousseau in Tysons Corner, VA; but that would mean an hour drive in a car with no A/C. So instead, my mother and I swung by Bra La La in Laurel, MD. The main problem with finding undergarments for my dress is that the deep v in the back instantly knocks Spanx, and many others, out of the running. After finding a few low backed styles, we settled on my favorite, which to my surprise was more on the “delicate/pretty” side of the spectrum, vs. the “industrial/military style” that I suspected would be needed.

I then asked for more shapewear because the corset we decided on doesn’t exactly reach the “pouch” area. The girl brought several items that were more on the pretty side and less on the functional side, until I finally had to tell her - I needed her to bring on the big guns, the “tough gals” of the shapewear world. She protested only a moment that I “would want something pretty on my wedding night”. So I informed her of my super secret plan to just change all my underthings before Mr.D and I headed to bed that night. Just try to envision getting industrial strength shapewear off in 7 seconds - it’s possible, but pretty humorous.

Now that I’m set with the shapewear part of things, I’ve moved onto the idea of a crinoline. I really wasn’t expecting to wear a crinoline at all, but then I realized that a crinoline is what keeps you from stepping on your dress. Mine is a trumpet shaped dress, but I’m mostly seeing hoops and styles for A-lines and ballgowns out there. Where is the love for the trumpet?!

A preliminary Google search turned up a few options that all seemed to run in the $40-$60 range. Is it cheap to say I was expecting these to cost less? I’ve even searched for them on the classifieds with little luck. Is a crinoline like underwear… something you don’t re-sell? Not to mention, they all seem like they’ll be very hot… you know, in addition to the items rearranging my organs and my (wonderful, beautiful) dress weighing me down.

If you wore a crinoline for your wedding - was it hot? If you’ve bought a crinoline - where did you find it?

You should check on E-bay! If you can’t find any trumpet-style crinolines there, then I would suggest finding a seller on Etsy to do a custom order for you. I’d recommend this shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5013829
It might be a little more than you want to pay, but you’ll be sure that it will fit perfectly! Then, if you plan on reselling your gown after the wedding, you can roll the price of the crinoline into your asking price!

I second Ebay, I got mine there for $21 shipped! Its an a line, but thin enough that I don’t think I’ll be too hot in it

I went to Trousseau and they were AMAZING. I got my wedding day earrings and wedding night lingerie there!

Definitely Ebay–I just got my crinoline there and saw a few trumpet styles. Not many…but a few!

i got my trumpet crinoline at my bridal salon, they only charged $45 which shocked be because i came up with the same online prices as you did.
i searched all over too and that was all i could find… although i will suggest that if you’re handy (even a lil’ bit) with a sewing machine you can make one very quickly… and even possibly save more as i’m stlil having more of the actual crinoline added to my slip by the seamstress doing my alterations.
good luck!

Ooh, finding a trumpet shaped crinoline does sound like a challenge! I think the price sounds fair though, and I think you could sell it afterward. Good luck!

I also have a trumpet shaped skirt on my gown & I found a perfect fit-and-flare crinoline at David’s bridal. It is PERFECT. And the price? Only $50.

the people at trousseau in VA sold me something that A) didn’t fit (at all) B) didn’t work with my dress (at all) and C) that i couldn’t return. I wouldn’t recommend their store - limited selection and huffy salesladies. i ended up getting a great bustier off of amazon.com. it fit great, looked great and was perfect with my low-backed dress.

Here’s a link for a Mermaid Slip that could possibly work:

Do you mind me asking exactly what you found for to smooth your “pouch” area? I’m having an awful time finding anything that will work.

I’m having the crinoline removed from my dress. Even in the bridal shop and then in the seamstress’s place, it was ridiculously hot. I literally had sweat streaming down my thighs. Just a TMI FYI! =)

[...] a veil. But I still hadn’t purchased my crinoline, and it had completely slipped my mind after even though I had just wrote a post about needing one! Luckily, my seamstress is much smarter than I, and suggested she make one and sew it directly into [...]
