Must Have Music

June 22nd, 2009 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Labrador

Since becoming engaged, I’ve kept my ears open to possible “must have” songs for our wedding. I’m still unsure whether to hire a ceremony musician/reception D.J. or be an iPod couple all the way, but in any case, we’ll want to have a say on a few music selections for the day. We’re doing things a bit non-traditionally, especially when it comes to the ceremony music.

I’ve compiled a list of songs for different parts of the ceremony and reception. There are a few gaps where I’m not sure what song(s) to use, so feel free to suggest something that will flow with the choices we’ve made so far! Without further ado, I present our wedding day “playlist”:

Prelude: Beautiful Day by U2

Processional:

Seating of parents: ?
Minister & groom: ?

Groomsmen & bridesmaids: ?
Flower girls, ring bearer, and Jr. BMs: Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole

Bride (ME!): Kingdom Come by Coldplay

Interlude: ?
(I’m not even sure if we’ll have music in the middle of the ceremony at all.)

Recessional: Clocks (instrumental) by Coldplay

Cocktail Hour: Classical Music

Dinner: Laid back lovey-dovey songs

First Dance:
Better Together by Jack Johnson

Cake Cutting: I’m Yours by Jason Mraz & a special song for Mr. Lab’s groom’s cake cutting

Bouquet Toss: Single Ladies by Beyonce (”All the single ladies put your hands up!” Classic.)

Garter Removal: ? (We definitely are thinking Mission Impossible or something along those lines!)

Mother/Son: Mr. Lab hasn’t picked this out yet.

Mother/Daughter (because I don’t have a dad to dance with): Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison (We both have brown eyes and picked this song out to dance to together when I was just a kid!)

Reception dancing: On our wedding website we’ve included a page for our guests to suggest songs to play during the reception. We figure that if they help pick them out, they’ll be more likely to get on the dance floor. I’m a BIG dancer, so I want the dance floor packed all night! I think that by allowing song requests, having an open bar, and picking a wedding party that loves to get down, my wish will be fulfilled. :D We’ll be sure to include some songs everyone knows (YMCA, Baby Got Back, etc.), too. And as the night goes on, we’ll move from the radio/clean versions to the “dirty filthy wanna make me shake my ass” music. ‘Cause that’s how I roll. ;)

Our website’s music suggestion page

Last Dance: Constellations by Jack Johnson

Etc. Music:

In addition to these songs, we’re also asking our entire wedding party to pick out individual songs tailored to their personalities to be introduced to at the wedding reception. For example, my MOH plays poker a couple times a week with her hubby and their friends, so she’s chosen Lady Gaga’s Poker Face! As for Mr. Lab and my entrance song… well, that’s a HUGE surprise that will have to wait until AFTER the wedding to be revealed. ;)

Photo slideshow:

  1. Mr. Lab growing up (I Go Back by Kenny Chesney)
  2. Me growing up (Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison)
  3. Our “courtship” (Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop by Landon Pigg)
  4. Our engagement from the proposal, all the way up to the wedding (Better Together by Jack Johnson)

How closely involved with the music selections are you when it comes to your wedding? Are you trusting your DJ to get the party started, or do you have a strict list?

For cocktail hour and dinner, we literally handed him CDs and said “play these.” For dancing, it was all on him. We just gave him guidelines and let him run with it.

Give vitamin string quartet a listen for your ceremony music. You can get some of the latest songs out now in a quartet version, very cool.

Get a DJ who will meet with you, understands your needs musicly and then give him a list of 10-15 songs you absolutely have to hear, a list of would like played and absolutely do not plays. This balance will let them keep everyone dancing and roll with whats working, but you hear the music you want.

We used to offer the iPod option, it turned out to be a mess everytime:(

We’re having an iPod (really iTunes from my laptop) wedding so we’re picking out all the music ourselves. We’re done with our reception music and if you’d like, you can check out our list for ideas! http://mypurplewedding.blogspot.com/2009/06/reception-tunes.html

I’m so excited to see that you are using Kingdom Come for your entrance song! I love that song! I used it in a wedding video for a bride and groom once. They loved it! It was very fitting.

we picked very nontraditional music for our wedding too. one of my favorites was the bridesmaids/groomsmen processional….it was “Sea of Love” by Cat Power (a cover of the song, of course). Other music we used:

Prelude: Green Arrow by Yo La Tengo; Major Label Debut by Broken Social Scene; New Slang by The Shins; Such Great Heights by Iron & Wine (cover); I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab for Cutie; Love & Some Verses by Iron & Wine; Our Way to Fall by Yo La Tengo

Seating of Family: Pitter Patter Goes My Heart by Broken Social Scene
Bridal March: Lover’s Spit (instrumental beginning looped) by Broken Social Scene
Recessional: All You Need is Love by The Beatles

Postlude: I’m a Believer by The Monkees; God Only Knows by The Beach Boys; She’s a Rainbow by The Rolling Stones

….i LOVED that we personalized our wedding by using music that we both loved. we’re both really big music people, so it really meant a lot.

good luck picking yours! :)

@Hayley: That’s exactly what we’ll be waiting for: the older guests to leave so we can get DOWN. Literally. haha

@spraguebride: So glad that song came out BEFORE our wedding!

@soniasays: Maaaaaaybeeeee…. ;)

@FlipFlopBride: Ooooo! That’s a good one! Gotta put it on the list!

@Mae: I only speak the truth! :P

@Wedding DJ: Thank you so much for all the tips!

@MyPurpleWedding: Thanks for the list! This is definitely going to help!

@jaymugirly: It’s just so perfect because I’ll be coming in on a horse & carriage: “wheels are turning”! I love it. Mr. Lab is warming up to it…

@TheIndecisiveBride: Oooo, there are some really good songs in that list! Thanks!

I think I’ve found you, the girls who are on the same wavelength. When I first intro’d all these songs to my FI he laughed. I am so doing “Can’t Touch This” for the garter, and “Single Ladies” for the bouquet. We’re doing a cocktail reception full of Coldplay, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Gavin Degraw and John Mayer. “I am a music freak of the two, I wanted 80’s, “shake your ass”, and I want a PARTY! He’s wanting country (which is fine, just not me). So of course, we spent hours and hours listening and arguing over songs for our playlist.
For the wedding, it’s in a Catholic church so you can only have certain kinds of music. I found a pianist, George Winston that has some gorgeous arrangements. I’m using “Angel.”

What are you thinking for your dinner music? I am thinking of doing the same theme for my dinner. Have you picked songs yet? I’d love to see your list
