About Mrs. Bruschetta

“Find something borrowed.”

This pesky three-word sentence has been staring back at me from our to-do list for several months. The line once included “old”, “new”, and “blue” as well, but I’ve edited out these adjectives as each item joined my ensemble.

The Something Borrowed Blues : wedding traditions Oldnewb

I’ll be using two somethings old — and one will be doing double duty as my something blue. And a number of somethings new will be part of my look, including my two veils, two pairs of shoes, gown and wedding ring. But I’m still stumped on a something borrowed — and simultaneously frustrated, upset and (slightly) panicked as our date approaches.

Mama Bruschetta and I had a brainstorming session the other day, but we didn’t have any lightbulb moments. I’ve ruled out borrowing jewelry — I’ll post about what my plan for accessories is soon, I promise! — since I’m aiming for a classic style, and don’t want anything that’s just too too. And I’m not even sure what, if any, family possessions my mother or aunts have that might lend themselves to being a something borrowed. I’m also a little wary of attaching a borrowed item to my bouquet handle, fearing it’ll fall off. (Remember? I worry lots!)

I’m completely open to any suggestions from the hive, though — and wish I could give bonus points for the most creative idea! What is/was your something borrowed?

My friend borrowed a small pin that she attached to the inside of her crinoline - a small gesture, but something that wouldn’t destroy the overall image you have for your look. There must be a small pin or brooch in your family somewhere - and it’s not likely to be dislodged from your dress.

Do you have a clutch yet? You could borrow that?
Or maybe if you can borrow a small pin from someone and put it on the under side of your dress at the bottom?

Or maybe a unique crystal bobby pin or barette that you can put in your hair?

My something borrowed was my veil - I loved it!! For you, I second the clutch idea, or maybe a small pin, brooch, or hair crystal… something small and delicate that can be “hidden” if you don’t really want to see it.

Does borrowed lipstick count? I left mine at home so I borrowed my MOH’s for the day :)

I borrowed my mom’s diamond earrings, but that doesn’t help you out. I can’t think of anything other than jewelry.

New for me was dress/veil/shoes/jewelry. Blue (also old) was a ring of my grandmother’s (no longer with us) - although it means I can’t wear my engagement ring on my right hand during the ceremony. Old (also borrowed) was a bolero made from the lace on the bottom of my mom’s wedding dress - she had the skills to sew it herself! Have also heard of people that have their old christening cap/dress that can be made into a bridal hanky - the opposite idea I guess from using the bottom of your dress to make a christening dress for your own baby. Borrowed is a clutch that my mom sewed for her mother, that she got back after her mother passed away. It doesn’t exactly match, but it’s pretty and means a lot to both of us, so I love it!

I borrowed a few things for my wedding. One was my sisters Miraculous Medal pendant that I pinned to the slip of my dress. Another was my great aunt’s rosary that I wore on my bouquet. The last thing was my mother’s wedding pearls. Does anyone you know have a handkerchief you could borrow? I sure needed mine that day.

I borrowed $5 from my dad and stuck it inside my dress until after the wedding. Classy, I know, but I was desperate. :)

My grandma has a hankerchief I am going to borrow. I will either wrap it around my bouquet or just keep in my hand to keep my palms from sweating and to wipe away tears.

My friend borrowed a song from her parents to dance with her dad to… it counts!

I didn’t really concern myself with this - I was semi-hoping my grandmother would let me borrow anything of hers but when she didn’t bring it up I didn’t worry about. As it happened, I had something old, new, and blue. I started crying when we got to the ceremony site (happy tears!) and my bridesmaid let me borrow her hankerchief. So….it will work out! The $5 idea is a good one, too!

@bgsualum: Hilarious. Now I have a back up plan if I can’t think of my something borrowed!

I borrowed a pair of earrings from a friend, and the handkerchief my mom (and older sister!) carried in her wedding. I wrapped the handkerchief around the handle of the bouquet for walking down the aisle. When I handed my flowers to my MOH, I held on to the hanky. I was a little concerned it would be in the way, as we held hands throughout the entire ceremony, but it wasn’t a problem. It was also super-convenient as I needed it several times!

I have a tiny heart pillow with a bee on it that Latte made for the V-day swap. I had planned on pinning it up and under my bouquet. If you’d like to borrow it just let me know!

@ all: Awwww, thanks for the ideas and for sharing your somethings borrowed!

@Miss D’orsay: Hmmm, a great idea, but I wonder if our late August wedding dates would make this (super cute-sounding) something bee-orrowed possible?

Here are some other ideas - a cake serving set, parents wedding song to dance to, grandfather’s pocket watch to carry in your clutch, prayer or poem to be read at reception that was used in another person’s wedding, or a cake topper from another’s wedding (I almost did this one.) I hope these ideas help. Good luck!

My Godmother let me borrow my grandmothers rosary beads. I had already borrowed jewelry from my sister-in-law, which she later gifted to me, so I wanted something very personal. Having the rosary beads from my grandmother, and given to me by my very close Godmother, was just what I needed. I hope you find something to borrow soon!

What about an anklet? No one will see it, so it doesn’t matter what it really looks like, bit it’ll be borrowed.
