Do You YUDU? Because I Do!

June 23rd, 2009 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Duckling

*I have not been able to stop smiling since Mrs. Bee gave me a Yudu. She basically made my month, or let’s be honest, more like my year! Now if you remember my obsession with my Cricut, Cuttlebug and craft gadgets in general, you can understand my pure joy in knowing that I now have the newest addition to the ProvoCraft family.

It arrived in a MASSIVE box last week and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Which is probably why I am behind in my blog posts due to Yudu research. I even burned a chicken the first night I found out I was going to be the proud owner of a Yudu. No joke, I ran upstairs to get my computer and look up Yudu demo videos and completely forgot I had a chicken on the stove until I discovered it was charred black. It’s okay, you can laugh at me and shake your head, Mr. Ducky did, as well.

I’ve been drooling over Gocco invitations and DIY goodies in the hive since I first discovered Weddingbee. I was originally hoping that I’d be able to use the Yudu for my wedding invitations that I need to make in the next few weeks.

But from what I’ve researched, the 110 mesh screen that comes with the Yudu is not fine enough for small fonts and detail. A 220 fine screen for paper printing and fine detail is coming out soon, but as far as I know,it is not available yet. I’ve been stalking the Yudu website for it to become available. Hopefully it happens really soon and I can use one for my invitations, but considering my deadline, I’m not sure if that’s realistic.

I’m trying to decide what sorts of wedding DIY I can do. What would you do with a Yudu? As I’ve researched the Yudu I’ve found some pretty awesome projects. I collected a few favorites to share with hive.

Fabulous luggage tags for a destination wedding?

My jaw dropped when I saw these invitations. Amazing! She even has her own Etsy shop.

This project is a simple DIY touch for rice bags for your guests.

Perhaps some cute totes for out of town guests or bridesmaids?

Has anyone else gotten or seen a demo of the Yudu? What have you made so far? Have you printed any fine fonts? Share your Yudu resources with the hive!

I was wondering if anybody was going to start talking about YUDU! It looks like so much fun! I want to take a class on it, I don’t think i’d be able to sit thru the online tutorials and the demos. I want to see more pictures of what people make with it!

Just when I thought I had to deal with my severe desire for a Cricut, I now have developed one for the Yudu.

ugh i guess i’m just dumb because after speding $300 on this, as well as watching all available videos and diy post’s (( including uber cheesy video that comes with yudu )) we still wound up spending over $100 just on supplies for screw ups, personally i found the gocco a much savvier investment however with it being no longer made it’s kinda sucky.

@Mrs. Penguin: Yes!! Can’t wait to hear what you make first. I’m hoping to take your advice since you that the gocco experience.

@Mandi: What were you trying to make? Do you think it was related to using paper with the 110 mesh screen?

Originally we bought it instead of a gocco to do our invites an soon realized it would not work on paper with the screens… we then tried to do some simple t-shirts and bags, all to fail miserably and make a million trips to joann’s and michaels in hopes of finding the cheapest supplies.. :[

Just an FYI…Provo Craft is developing a finer mesh screen to make printing on paper easier. :D I have gotten great prints on cardstock & paper bags (& a lot of other things) with the current screen though.

I emailed someone at provocraft in hopes of finding out when a finer mesh screen will be available… will update you when she gets back to me! I really like the large screen… gocco’s tiny screen was always something I had to work around and that bummed me out. But, for the kinds of projects I do (mainly paper), I do worry that the 110 mesh screen won’t work (I’m not even willing to try, esp. if they’re coming out with that fine mesh screen in the near future). Gocco’s screens are 200 mesh. Excited to see what Yudu will offer… the fact that you can reuse the screens (by washing them) is money!

I have been researching this all night thanks! That is pretty small print in the second/third photo but I wonder if it only came out clear because it is fabric.

I have been trolling researching the Yudu also. I saw posted elsewhere on Weddingbee about other alternatives namely StencilPro and PhotoEZ. I am wondering how these compare to the YUDU.

@Dew Drop: That was my guess as well

@msgirard: I haven’t heard about those products. What do they do?

@wedding videos: I think it generally runs around $300, which is kind of pricey. You can’t use Michael’s coupons to buy the actual machine, but you can all the accessories and ink etc. I’m also researching alternative inks and supplies so I’ll let you know if I discover anything good.

I’ve seen these in the store and have been wondering if they will work as an alternative to the Gocco. It looks like we’ll have to wait for the finer mesh screen to know for sure…

I really love my YuDu. I’ve been playing with it off and on for a few months now and each time I get going it becomes an obsession, and I get amazed all over again at the possibilities. Thanks for posting the link to my blog.

@Miss Duckiling

Miss Bear Club posted comments and a link on these alternatives here (http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/02/02/what-can-yudu-to-replace-a-gocco-machine/)

If they don’t come out with the finer meshed screens you can get the plans to build a screen printing press at http://www.diyteeshirts.com and then use standard higher mesh screens with it.
