Passport: Check

June 23rd, 2009 @ 12:35 pm by Mrs. Star

Despite my (okay, I’ll admit it) nearly constant nagging over the past four or five months, Mr. Star has finally just sent in his passport application. Yay! We’re actually going to get to go on our honeymoon together!

I’ve had a passport for a while now; I got mine so that my best friend and I could go on a whirlwind tour of France one summer during college. My honey, however, has never left the country aside for one middle school weekend trip to Canada. So, our honeymoon is going to blow his mind!

Our honeymoon will be in… wait for it… GREECE! Yes, Greece! We’re terribly excited about it. Not only does it go with our general wedding theme of drama, since Greece is the birthplace of theatre, but it’s also supposed to have incredible sights and delicious food. Plus, my mom bought me a subscription to Rosetta Stone online for Greek about a month ago, so I’ve been learning the language and can’t wait to use it! Granted, my Greek is still pretty limited, but considering how different it is from English and how quickly the program is teaching me, I’m pretty impressed!

One of the things I have loved most about this whole wedding process is the perfectly legitimate excuses that it has given me to learn completely new skills.

I’ve started learning Greek for the honeymoon. I learned calligraphy to address my envelopes. I learned how to sew a birdcage veil. And the list goes on. I love to learn new things, and since I graduated college, I feel like the excuses to take time out of a crazy life and spend money on the tools to learn crazy, random new skills have diminished. Enter: our wedding!

So, I’ve ended this post on a completely different note than I started it on, but I am wondering if anyone else out there has loved learning new wedding skills? What have YOU learned?

Honeymoons are soooo important and sometimes they’re best taken a few months after the wedding. It’s a good way to get that “high” again after the wedding and festive events. I’m engaged and thinking I should wait to take my honeymoon. Not sure yet…

Greece that is so exciting! That is on my must see list. We are going to Barcelona for our Honeymoon. I can’t wait.

I totally agree about the wedding bringing out the craftiness. I have been making so many things. It is exciting.

Yay for Greece! That is one our list as well. I am pulling for France though and to aid my efforts, I have been learning French with Rosetta Stone. Between that, dance lessons, my first shot at scrapbooking and learning how to make a proper floral arrangement, I’m practically closing in on Martha!

Ooh! I’ve been so curious to hear a real review of Rosetta Stone. I have a fascination with learning other languages that unfortunately hasn’t led to me learning any yet, but I’ve wondered if R.S. actually works as well as those in-flight magazines say it does!

I’m dying to go to Greece, too, by the way. But I’m pretty sure it’s not in our honeymoon budget! So I hope you’ll bring back lots of pictures =)

Good luck with the Greek! That should really help you. I appreciated all the things organizing the wedding helped me learn, too, but it’s been mainly crafting and cooking.

When I got out of college, I did the same thing and started taking classes because I just felt the need to learn something. I took cake decorating classes, guitar lessons and scrapbooking classes. I also taught myself to crochet and worked to get more skilled in knitting.

I think learning a language is awesome! Good luck with that! Greece sounds like an awesome trip!

You’re going to LOVE Greece. We were there last October and Santorini Island was our favorite.

I went to Athens, Santorini, and Meteroa in 2004. In addition to learning some of the language, it will be immensely helpful to learn the greek alphabet. I was lucky and already knew it (thanks to years of engineering and math education, subjects that use the greek alphabet extensively). Travelling SO much easier when you can read signs.

I just got back from Greece! I was in Athens, Mykonos, Corfu, and Mount Olympus. Great choice! Favorite places: Gialis beach in Mykonos (my fav location of the trip) and exploring caves in Corfu. Athens was fun, but didn’t need much time and Mount Olympus and Olympia were the same. Where are you planning to go?

Ahh! Another Greek honeymoon! My dream destination, we’ll see if I ever make it there.
I haven’t learned any new wedding skills, but I’m taking Spanish so that I can stop struggling to understand FI’s family when they’re all talking to each other. And so that I won’t be learning my Spanish ABC’s with out children later!

Yay! Another Greece bride! I made the Dude get his passport a few months ago. I’m so excited to travel overseas with him for the first time!

I’m so jealous you’re going to Greece. Would give my left (and right) arm for a trip there!

That is so awesome that you are learning some Greek before your trip! The folks over here will love you for it (even if you can only use a few words!).

I think I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but I’ve lived, worked and traveled extensively in Greece (I’m an archaeologist here). I’m happy to answer any questions any of you honeymooning in Greece might have!

We’re doing a little Greece in our HM too! Neither of us know any of the language though we do plan to try to learn some of those basic phrases before we go.
