About Mrs. Swan

Au Naturale

June 24th, 2009 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Swan

As promised, I thought I would show you all some great styles for women of color with natural hair (meaning no chemical straightening). I know that when I started to wear my hair this way WAAAAY back in the mid ’90s, there were really not too many options or places to look for these styles. My, how times have changed, and I’m glad to see it! When I’m good and ready to chop off my locs and start fresh, I’m going to need some inspiration. Why not start now, right?

I like this first one the best. These are very small twists that are twisted on the head in a similar manner as cornrows (except they’re twists… I hope this makes sense). I think this is totally beautiful, elegant and different.

Here are some other variations of this style.

In this case, the ends are twisted together and released to produce a crimped look.

Au Naturale : wedding hair Khamit3

This is a similar style with two strand twists shaping the face. Again, those are actually small twists that look like cornrows.

I think I would rock this style below whether I was getting married or not.

More twists, except this time, hair extensions are added for length as well as to make the style last longer.

Au Naturale : wedding hair Kinkyco

Of course for years, my hair was a variation on one of these two styles below. These are much more spruced up versions.

Au Naturale : wedding hair Tdolds

Or, something like this (which usually was a precursor to the one at the above):

Au Naturale : wedding hair Two Str

I didn’t even get into braids really. Maybe I’ll save that for another post. I hope this was helpful to some of the au natural brides out there!

I love the twists! One of the girls that I work with has her hair in “twists” often and it’s so cute! I think the very first style is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I think the first one is gorgeous. Also, Afrobella, http://www.afrobella.com, posts on weddings every so often, someone w/ kinky/curly hair could totally go over there and get some ideas.

My hair is pretty long and I don’t have the guts to go through the process to quit chemically straightening it. I cut down and decided I’d just do it once a year, which is the same thing, but somehow a lesser evil in my mind. Not to mention the fact that I have no patience for my hair and from watching my sister, au naturale can be a patience-trying experience as well.

However, I love these styles, especially the the last look and the two above it. I’m going to pass them to her to think about for my wedding since she’s at a loss of what she would like to do.

I actually wear braids but I’m having my hair straightened for the wedding - not chemically though as that stuff is way too strong for my hair.

I am actually looking forward to having my hair straightened, it’s been so long since I’ve rocked my hair without braids.

However, love the first do but that would take at least a day and a half, to two days to complete.

if i was natural, i would “remix” the first 2 by using the design of the twists of the second look and using the up do of the first pic. Another reason i like the first two is because it seems that a lot of time was taken to make those small twists, and should be done for special occasions.

I would love to see you pull your locks up into a regular ol’ chic bun (very natural looking with the dreads). You’re so pretty!

Love these looks! Thanks. I am getting braids this weekend because I have been in ‘boot camp’ and I can’t do anything with my hair anymore. Thanks for the inspirational styles.

I really like the first look for a wedding, it looks so classic, the rest are pretty awesome for day to day looks! I think the third one is very rock star!
