My Ring’s Understudy/Stunt Double

June 24th, 2009 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Labrador

Yup, you read it right: my ring has a “body” double. No, my ring isn’t planning on starring in any Hollywood movies or Broadway plays anytime soon. But it did go away on a VERY long trip today. That’s why the understudy had to step in.

Before I get to that, let me explain what prompted us to “cast” the double.

A couple weeks ago I glanced down at my ring and gasped with shock. One of its micro-pave side stones was missing! I knew this was bound to happen sometime. Both my MOH and FSIL’s pave stones have fallen out before and they warned me that it is pretty much inevitable. Thankfully, Mr. Lab bought an extra insurance policy with Zales to cover this type of thing. But we nearly made a disastrous mistake regarding the policy that was avoided only by some really good timing.

Zales offers a Lifetime Diamond Commitment where if the diamonds become chipped, broken, or lost from its original setting, they will replace the diamond at no charge. But here’s the catch: you HAVE to have your ring inspected twice a year (every 6 months from the date of purchase) to keep the policy in force. Neither Mr. Lab nor I knew we HAD to do this. We both assumed that if something ever happened, we’d walk into the store, tell a representative, then send the ring on its merry way to be made brand new again. WRONG.

Because Mr. Lab bought my ring in December, my 6 month inspection deadline is at the end of June. Had my side diamond decided to fall out in next month, we’d be screwed. Mr. Lab has yet to have my ring insured independently (bad doggie!), so we would have had to pay out of pocket to have the ring repaired. Fortunately, luck was on our side and the diamond fell out within the 6 months of purchase. We were alerted to the details of the policy when we took the ring into the store.

However, we ran into some bad news when we dropped off the ring. The store manager told us that because of the upcoming 4th of July holiday and summer in general, many jewelers in our area are on vacation. This meant my ring has to be shipped all the way to Dallas, TX, from Georgia! She told me it could take up to 6 weeks for my ring to return! The longest I’ve been apart from my ring was when it was being sized, and that was only about a week. I’ve grown so accustomed to my ring that I feel naked without it. My ring finger even has a tan line and indent replacing the spot where my ring used to rest!

Source

Needless to say, the thought of not having my ring for over a month was not easy news to take. That was when Mr. Lab and I started discussing options for a ring “body double”. We both thought it would be a good idea to have a backup ring for any future ring repairs or even for times when wearing my “real” ring would put it in danger (i.e., at the gym lifting weights, going to the beach, etc.).

I thought about just wearing my wedding band since my ring came as a set. But I ultimately felt like that would be cheating. I only want to wear it when I have a “Mrs.” in front of my name. So while we were at the mall, we decided to check a couple department stores to see if they had any inexpensive replicas of my ring. No luck. So we made quick trips to Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, and Target. The only ring we found that came even close was over $300.

That’s when I turned to the infallible internet (or interwebs as Mr. Lab and I call it)! I quickly found what I was looking for on Amazon.com. I found a nearly identical ring and band made of cubic zirconia, set in sterling silver for only $46, including the gift box! Look how closely it resembles my ring:

Real vs. Fake

But, it gets better! The company selling the ring, Eve’s Addiction, was running two promotions: free shipping, plus 20% off the purchase price. My total came out to be only $36.80 shipped! The ring should arrive in less than a week and will be ready to get right to work. Now I can sit back and relax knowing I’ll still have my mark of a betrothed woman when my “real” ring is out of commission. And I’m glad my ring finger won’t have to go around looking “indecent” anymore with all its public nudity! ;)

Would you consider wearing a stunt ring?

I did this! Ours wasn’t quite as well planned. We just ran to Wal-mart and got a glitzy fab fake rock. Unfortunately, it was SO big that I just couldn’t wear it :/ Purpose defeated.

What a lucky catch! Are you wearing the stunt ring yet? I have a thin, plain gold band that I wear when doing dirty activities when I want to leave my ring safely at home. I don’t like naked-finger either!

Maybe every girl should have a few diamonds laying around for this very reason! ;) If I had to send my ring out, I’d wear other rings gifted to me by my fiance and strut around anyway like it was my lovely e-ring!

PS: tell Mr Lab to get that thing insured, stat! I stressed so much while I was in uninsured limbo, seriously checking my hand every two minutes. You know, the squeeze the fingers together check. Not fun!

Yes, we’ve looked into getting a sterling & cz replica. Haven’t done it yet, but my ring is insured through a personal articles policy (I, not the FI, took out the policy and connected it to my homeowner’s policy).

I think it’s a big dirty conspiracy for the jewelers not to stress that inspection timeline when you purchase the warranty. I didn’t know about this, either. Thankfully, when I went to get the free resize and replated, they did a quick “inspection” and my ring was good enough for them to re-instate the warranty.

I need a stunt double too!

Yay! That’s so similar!!!

I bought a double on eBay actually… but mine doesn’t really look like my ‘real’ ring at all - i couldn’t find one that did! Best part about mine was that it was a whopping $6 including shipping from HongKong.

I intend to get a stunt double - in fact, that’s exactly what I’ve been calling it ever since I decided to hatch the plan. Haven’t gotten one yet, though!

I have heard so many of these stand-in ring stories! My friend was even ENGAGED with a stand-in ring… her now husband and planned the engagement event but the ring didn’t come in, so they gave him a stand-in. Such is life.
Perfect stunt double though!

I actually have a back up that is real LOL. My e-ring is my grandmothers and so far it has not left my finger. When/If it needs too I have a back up that is also real, from ebay. I also have a big (too big) fake one from the home show in January too.

What timing!!! My FI and i both have “vacation” doubles that we will wear when we travel or are out doing things that maybe just aren’t suited for the real deal. I’ve had TWO friends loose their wedding rings while swimming in the ocean so we were sure to get our stand-ins really early on in the process :)

you will probably want a stunt ring when you’re preggers too - at least everyone I know who has been pregnant lately has needed one. My ring and yours are so similar that I put your “stunt double” on my wish list on Amazon for later!

I noticed a missing pave stone yesterday at work! Luckily, we got the ring through a family friend who has offered to repair it so no worries there. I like the stunt idea in the meantime, though!

I laughed out loud that you two call it the interwebs. Me and my guy call it the intertubes.

I love the idea of having a stunt double.

The cartoon made me laugh out loud, too :)

One of the tiny prong-set diamonds on my wedding ring fell out on the second day of our honeymoon last month. I had the Jared’s warranty, which has the same 6-month inspection clause. I wrote a reminder on my calendar every month it’s due so I don’t forget! Jared’s was able to replace the diamond that day, so I only had to go without my ring for a couple hours.

(My husband also had his ring fall off in the pool. When he realized 2 hours later, thankfully we found it. The lady at the jewelry store told me it is VERY common for people to lose rings on their honeymoon because sometimes they haven’t had them sized properly yet, and lots of people go swimming and the water is cool and makes your finger smaller. Needless to say, my hubby left his ring in our room every time we went swimming for the rest of the trip.)

Wow, what a great match!

Thanks for reminding me I have to take my ring in! The annoying thing is you have to bring the inspection paperwork to Littman’s for it to count. So, twice I’ve been at the mall, once even picking up our rings, but they can’t “inspect it officially.” It’s a scam but I’ve had to get my ring resized twice and it covered it so it is worthwhile I guess. The woman at my store though told me they are lenient on the 6 months

we’ll get a matching titanium pair for travels (we travel sorta rough in obscure corners of the world), that will match our real bands

I considered switching my diamond out for a CZ and putting the diamond in a safe for a while (rather than getting an actual stunt double). Mr. Peng asked what would be the point of him ever getting me a real diamond in the first place? But I thought of it as more like… well, cash, for instance. Paper money doesn’t actually have REAL value… but it’s backed by something real, and thats what makes a $100 bill… worth $100. I thought this would kind of be the same deal! But he kinda sounded sour on it, so I gave up on that one :) I just don’t wear my e-ring now when I know i’m going somewhere shady or going somewhere like the gym!

When my ring was being sized, my fiancee ‘borrowed’ a ring from the jeweler as a loaner, so I understand the feeling of loss. But you’ll be SO happy when you get it back!

@June Bug: At least you found one! There was absolutely NOTHING when we went in. I think it may have had to do with them renovating the Wally World we went to though.

@mary-alice-me: Not wearing it yet. It should be here in a few days!

@Melissabegins: I’ve been trying to tell him! I’m scared to death that it’s going to get lost or something before he insures it. I would just take it to be insured myself if I had the money to do it right now. :(

@iswimibikeirun: That’s a good idea. Too bad we don’t own a home yet to do the same!

@FlipFlopBride: I concur!

@Miss Mary Jane: I bow to the true deal finder! Wow.

@Champagne Wishes: We thought about getting engaged with a stand-in ourselves because we weren’t finding what we wanted for a long time. It seems like they make more rings in my style as fakes than real!

@Amber1279: Lucky girl! I wish I had a heirloom piece. That’s why I guess I was gravitated towards the vintage ring look.

@Dani: One of our friends had a fake one when she was preggers! She took advantage of the occasion and got a BIG fake one that looked surprisingly real. I think I may do the same when that time comes!

@Sarah: A couple hours?!? Not fair!!! :)

@Mrs. Penguin: I had sorta the same view on my ring. During the months long ring search, I kept finding setting styles I liked but Mr. Lab had WAY higher standards in the center diamond than I did. I didn’t mind wearing a less expensive ring (we almost just got a stunt e-ring to wear for real), but he was just too against it in the long run.

@Perk: Zales said we could do that if my ring happens to need to be repaired too close to the wedding. I’m glad they have some sort of back up because that was something that really worried me about the turn-around time.

oh my gosh…one of my side stones fell out too!!! but i still haven’t had it fixed…happened like 3 weeks before my wedding, i don’t trust having any jeweler fixing it unless i’m in the room with them, hence the delay…and no way is any place shipping my ring anywhere

funny! I just got a couple of “fake” rings off amazon this week, waiting for them to arrival any day now. I’m going on a cruise in a couple weeks and have been told not to bring my ring there, and thought a stand in would be great.

I couldn’t find anything close to what my ring looks like, so I just thought I would have some fun and buy rings that were totally different to see how that looks on my finger… I ended up getting more than one. ^_^
