About Mrs. Gloss

The Grand Exit

June 24th, 2009 @ 6:19 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Maggie: What’s your favorite thing you ever wore?

Dora: Ever?

Maggie: Yeah. In your whole life.

Dora: My going-away suit from my wedding. Black and white checks, very fitted. I felt like Jackie Kennedy in that suit.

I want that feeling.

I want to rush out of the doors wearing the perfect outfit, timeless and chic, to guests cheering our names and tossing rice. My new husband’s arm will be locked with mine as we dash into the getaway car and drive off to our relaxing and exotic honeymoon location.

But then there is the other side… I don’t want to leave the party!!

  1. I’ve been planning this event for over a year now and want to fully enjoy all the hard work and long nights I’ve put in.
  2. Our guests are traveling great distances (some which I don’t get to see that often) and I want to spend as much time with them as possible!
  3. I could absolutely see wanting to leave the reception early if we had never ‘played Twister’ before - because that would totally be worth ditching all our guests. :) But that is not the case.

So anyways, there will be no amazing get-away pictures and we will probably be there until they make us leave (even though we got an amazing room).

Are you planning a fabulous get-away with a classic outfit? or are you going to stay until they kick you out?

Bonus points if you can name the movie! :)

HA! In her shoes is the movie, LOVE IT! And I’m planning on dancing until the sun comes up at our wedding (well, ok, until midnight, which is when the band has to stop due to a town noise ordinance…) but still….

I stayed at my party the whole time and wouldn’t have changed a thing! I loved my reception!

We were the last two to leave, for the reasons that you outlined above! Plus, we wanted to take some cake home. ;)

I feel the same way–i know I won’t want to leave the party! We’re gonna after-party when the reception is over, so hopefully I will get the best of both worlds! The party always dies when the bride and groom leave anyway!

Totally agree! I want to stick around until the very last guest has gone and then recap everything with anyone who’s still there. But at the same time, I always think of my mother’s gorgeous “going away dress” and how it was so special……

Hmm, maybe I’ll just buy a special “going on my honeymoon dress” and wear it on the plane the next day! It’s still technically a going away dress, right? (I’m thinking I won’t be able to get the flight attendatns to shower me with confetti when I leave the plane though. Maybe free pretzels?)

I know - I want a going away suit too! But we are definitely staying as late as everyone else at the reception. Hmm… great idea about wearing the getaway dress onto the plane for the honeymoon!

We had an end time for our party as set by the location. So we exited in our wedding gear, quickly changed (into my mother’s cocktail style wedding dress), and then invited everyone to an after party! I was so thrilled ot be wearing my moms dress, still look uber cute, and to be a little more relaxed for the afterparty…. which we stayed at until 3 am. :) Good times.

We did a grand exit out of the ballroom when the official reception ended - with bubbles -

but then right afterwards, we went to the after party with everyone else and stayed until the bitter end!

we’re having a sparkler exit, then we’ll get on a party bus with our guests for the afterparty!

I am torn as well…I really want a sparkler farewell and saying goodnight…but I don’t want to end the night early! However, I have been to weddings where there was no official send off at the end and the older crowd was confused, they wanted to leave but were waiting for the bride and groom to leave. I will have quite a few older family there, so I think we will have a send off and then tell some people to meet us somewhere else for drinks. No official after-party, but still some way to keep the fun going.

Stay and party! You could always do what my cousin did: She did a grand, dramatic exit, drove around the block, then re-entered and said “Just kidding, guys!”, hahaha. It was pretty cute, I must say.

I am trying to figure out the same thing. I want to hang out with my friends and family, but would love some adorable get away number. Oh the decisions!!

For the amount of money I paid for my dress, I am staying in my dress.

But, we are doing the grand exit through an aisle of sparklers!

We’ll probably leave like 20 minutes early. I want to stay long enough to enjoy the party and have a cute send off, but Mr. BW and I have never played twister before….soo….umm… yeah :P

We stayed till the end. Our guest knew the party was winding down because the DJ played a last song and then we did a second line onto the venue’s porch. My husband and I stood outside and thanked our guest for coming as they left.

I personally would feel weird to be the last one at my own party! Like MissBookworm, I’ll make sure to cut it close, but I really want everyone to send me and my new husband off properly! Sparklers, a new outfit, diving into our getaway car, the works!

our reception ends at 9:30 so we’ll be leaving at the end but i’m changing into a new dress (decided agains the suit/jacket option due to August heat) and we’re heading out to the bars with our friends who are all here visiting us! the party doesn’t Have To end if you don’t wnat it to

we literally turned the lights out as we left…and I LOVED every minute of it. I do kinda miss the “going away” shot but all that extra time with those we love was totally worth it!

Hmm. I don’t think I am going to change. I love my dress so much! I hate the idea of taking it off!

I’m not sure what we are doing about the get away, but I will say that we do have a band playing for the after party so we will be there pretty late!

right now we are planning a fake exit. so we can get the pictures and all, but we’ll probably just go right back in after that.

I have the same vision… like on Father of the Bride when Annie and Brian are making their exit and she is in a cream suite.
It is the first official “wife” outfit!

We stayed until the end…and beyond. I hope people weren’t waiting for a grand exit before they could leave, because we were chillin’, makin’ s’mores, playin’ guitars…

I love that scene in “In Her Shoes”–so cute! :)

We were the last people to leave the party. I really wanted to be there to see everyone and enjoy the party, seeing as I had spent so much time getting ready for it.

@Mrs. Taffy: Good call on taking the cake!
@Nothing But Bonfires: Maybe they could (gently) toss some pretzels at you when you get off :) ?
@MissBookworm: I’d be out pretty quick too!
@mdarrah: What a cute idea!
@butterywaffles: Love that! I think we might be able to pull of the fake exit and then REALLY get the party started when we return!!

I stayed till the end and after we had an afterparty at my parents house with just the closest family and friends (about 100 people). The after party ended at 8 in the morning because the sun came up and we could no longer see the karaoke words from the proyector.

I’m with the fake exit, why waste a perfectly good party? Maybe leave when all the guests are enjoying their drinks and getting chummy… :D

I danced till the very end and was shocked when the band stopped playing to find out it was after 1 a.m.! We didn’t plan a grand exit — in fact, we took the bus we had rented back to the hotel with all the other guests. We boarded the bus to applause and cheers, which felt grand to me!

I’ll be leaving in my wedding dress and we’re having bubbles. My FI and I have um…uh…never “played twister” as you put it so we’ll be ditching the guests whenever we feel ready to leave. I’m guessing somewhere between 2-3 hours into the reception.

For us, the reception was far to short as it was. We wanted to catch every minute that we could with family and friends and I couldn’t imagine leaving early, knowing that people we didn’t get to see very often were still hanging out behind us. It was hard enough to leave for the honeymoon the next day!
