Taking it Back to the Old Country

June 26th, 2009 @ 1:35 pm by Mrs. Joey

Mr. Joey and I both lived in Russia. Actually, I take that back. I lived in Russia and Mr. Joey lived in the U.S.S.R. in the early 1980s. His dad had a one year teaching fellowship at Moscow State University in 1982 or 1983, and the whole family moved there.

Mr. Joey and I have different feelings about Russia. I loved it and would go back any day. He’s not too fond of it. All he remembers is lots of snow, lots of cabbage, and lots of strange days in a Soviet kindergarten. I think everyone but FFIL Joey feels that way about their time in Moscow.

I bring this up because of the groom’s cake we’re not doing. I thought about doing a groom’s pie, since Mr. Joey doesn’t like cake, but he said it wasn’t necessary and he wasn’t sure he wanted one.

I was fine with his decision until FMIL Joey sent me an email with fun cakes from Russian bakers. These are my favorites…

I really like the last one, and this would have been my choice for a groom’s cake. When Mr. Joey lived in Moscow, he was required to join the Young Pioneers. It’s sort of like the Boy Scouts, and maybe a little of Jr. ROTC (minus all the physical tests). We all tease him about his time as a Young Pioneer because of his marching skills. Apparently his favorite part of his time there was marching during Young Pioneer events and meetings. He’s a skilled marcher, I guess. Ah… if only he liked cake.

I’ll leave you with this shot of my Young Pioneer (on the right) and his brother .

Are you doing a groom’s cake? What interesting shape will it take?

We are *thinking* of doing a groom’s cake. Don’t know exactly what it would look like yet, but it would definitely be something outdoorsy (maybe a kayak!)

Our actual wedding cake is pretty non-traditional, though, so we’ll probably skip it and save the money.

We aren’t doing a groom’s cake.. in fact, I hadn’t even heard of a groom’s cake until this year. My man doesn’t like cake and he likes saving money :-P I could take or leave a piece of cake, so we’re not getting a regular wedding cake either!

We are going the cupcake route for bride’s cake and decided to do key lime tarts for “grooms cake”….it’s at the beach so seemed fitting.

I just got this in an email forward… we want to do the sewing machine for my Grandma’s 80th birthday… small world!

Yes, I am ALL about the groom’s cake… I want to surprise him with something since I think the Mr. is going to write me a song.

I’m thinking it will be video game related since he is a gamer. Jury is still out though…

Does Mr. Joey like cheesecake? I could see that last picture working as a cheesecake.

I really want to but it all depends on the budget. If we do it will be a surprise and it will be a 3D Sculpted NFL helmet of our team, throwback colors. =D

True story: I asked my honey if he wanted a cake (meaning a WEDDING cake as opposed to say, an ice cream sundae bar). His reply? “Yes, I’d like a groom’s cake!” I’m having one made in the shape of Texas, decorated like the state flag.

We’re not doing a groomscake but I’m surprising him with two cakes in the shape of baseball hats for the rehearsal dinner - one for his team, the Chicago White Sox and one for my team, the Boston Red Sox.

Hys. Terical. My fiance is Russian and he was a young pioneer, too. He still has the red scarf. I love the last cake; it would be great on Army Day (or whatever its called). Too bad its already passed!

Did your fiance also have to stand around a tanning light in his underwear in class in the winter for vitamin D??

@denise: Yes but we’re not allowed to speak about it. :) I secretly think he really enjoyed the young pioneers :).

The sewing machine cake is amazing - that would be a perfect birthday cake for my mum…but alas she is also not a cake fan.
I’m planning to surprise my guy with a motorcycle cake at our wedding. :)

This is nothing to do with cakes, but man, that is so cool that Mr. Joey was in the USSR. Not cool in terms of, ya know, communism and whatnot, but what an interesting slice of Mr. J’s life.

Aww, I love the Russian cake idea. It’s cool that you guys share that commonality, even though you each had totally different experiences there.

Omg, that first cake looks SO real! I was skimming and wondered why you had such an old sewing machine, lol!

The photo of the young pioneer is adorable! FMIL’s friend offered to make him a grooms cake, but he isn’t sure what he wants. I like the team helmet idea, the outdoorsy idea is also a great one! We don’t kayak, but maybe a hiking boot, or a tent. Cool ideas!
