The Passing of a Beloved Puppy

June 27th, 2009 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

Yesterday was an extraordinarily sad day for myself and my family. After fifteen wonderful years, we decided to put down our sweet little dog, Molly.

Molly was an adorable little girl who loved jumping through the pachysandra, going on romps through the woods and relaxing in the sunshine. One of my favorite habits of hers was in the summertime when we had shorts or a skirt on, if Molly walked by you and was feeling especially lovey, she’d give our legs a little slick. Like a little passing, “Love you!”

But in recent years, Molly had heart problems.

She could barely take those walks she so enjoyed, and was losing her hearing as well. She never wagged her tail, and leg slicks were a thing of the past. We think she was in daily pain. So my family made the difficult decision to put Molly to rest.

It’s so painful to deal with the passing of a pet, but I think it will be especially hard when we go home next week for the wedding, and find that Molly isn’t there to greet us at the door.

Have you ever had to deal with the death of a pet?

So very sorry Miss Powder Puff. Many many hugs to you. I have a 12 yo mastiff who is like another child to me and I am always giving him so much love because I’m afraid something like this will happen.

My sympathies. It is always so hard to make that decision about a beloved pet but if she was suffering, than what you did was best. I am tearing up just thinking about your dog. Cry and grieve for your dog, they are family members just like people are.

I lost my first cat years ago. She was with me all through college, through good times and bad. When I lost her I felt so alone–weird right, people say ‘it’s just a cat’ but she was my love. I still think of her daily, but now I have two new cats, not really new, they’re already 8 and 13 yrs! But I adopted them after I lost my first kitty. I knew she could never be replaced but these two keep me busy and warm at night! It gets better with time. Hugs for you and your family!

Hugs go out to you and your family. The passing of a beloved pet is difficult, they are basically a furry family member. We’ve had many pets for all my life and have lost a few (both naturally and through the very painful and necessary choice) It’s difficult every time. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie “What Dreams May Come” but there is a wonderful scene where Robin Williams character is reunited with their family dog in Heaven. I always try to think of that and imagine that’s where my furry family member has gone when we have a death in the pet family.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Our pets have never been just average pets, but family members so I know the saddness you feel now. I’m glad to hear your girl is in less pain, that’s what I had to remind myself over and over when we had to let our golden retreiver go a few years ago. Hugs to you and your family!

I’m wishing you and your family comfort. I lost my first Bernese Mountain Dog (who I had for 10 years) to cancer 5 years ago. I still think about her all the time and miss her dearly. It was 3 years before I could manage to get another dog.

Dogs are pure and genuine love and that’s what makes them so special. If Molly were here, she’d be worrying about how you feel with her departure!

Oh I’m so sorry for your loss. Like goldenbear, I too lost my first cat last summer. He enjoyed going outside and then one day he didn’t come home. He was getting older and his legs weren’t so good. I know I probably shouldn’t have let him go out anymore but he had this bad habit of getting mad and peeing on stuff if I didn’t let him… bad kitty! Needless to say, I don’t let the other two cats out now. It’s so horrible when we loose our pets but I’ve found that time seems to help ease the pain a bit. My thoughts are with you and I am sending hugs your way!

I am so sorry to hear about your Molly. My parents made the decision to put down our beagle, Artemis, in November, and it was not easy. But we gave her the best dog life we could, full of snacks and snuggles and love - just like I’m sure you and your family did for Molly. Much love.

Awwww, big bee hugs. We quickly and suddenly lost the cat I’d had my whole childhood when I was in college, and it was so much harder than I thought it’d be — but it definitely helped to be able to talk to and cope with my family.

Without even knowing you and your family, reading this post about Molly made me cry. :( I lost my childhood dog too and I was absolutely devastated. My dogs always bring a smile to my face. And they’ve snuggled with me on my lowest days and licked me when I cry. It sounds like your family gave Molly a wonderful life, and I’m sure she’s smiling down on you from doggy heaven! :)

Sorry for your loss :( My family went through the similar thing with our family dog when I was in high school. It helped knowing the pup was no longer in pain, and that she was in doggy heaven :)

So sorry to hear about your family pet. I know I would be devestated if my little puppy (and ringbearer) passed away. Your Molly looks a lot like my little Pepper, just a little less wirey, and we get leg slicks too!

That is awful…. I had a Cairn terrier. Although I only had him for 3 years, I had a strong bond with him. He was like a best friend to me. It hit me real hard when he had some kind of cancer. My parents couldn’t afford to pay for the vet care. So we all agreed that the best thing for them and Cody (the dog) was to put him to sleep. I am starting tear up as I type this. It is so hard to deal with the loss of a pet that you hold so dear to your heart. Cody’s b-day is on 7/4 and I will definitely be thinking about him this Saturday.

I also had a dog named Molly that we lost to heart disease last year. She was almost 14. Our family was devastated by her loss and my dad still has a hard time talking about her. Her collar was my something blue and was wrapped around the bottom of my bouquet. My condolences to you and your family. They are truly like a member of the family and the pain when we lose them is very real. Just know that she is looking down at you from her spot on the other side of the “rainbow bridge” .

I am so very sorry about your Molly girl. She sounds like a very sweet girl and I know she meant a lot to you. It will be hard. Perhaps you could acknowledge her somehow in the ceremony, by putting a photo of her in your programs, and dedicating them to her. Might be a nice way to include and recognize your family’s love for her.
Bless you always,
Tammy

I am so sorry. This is one of the most difficult decision we have to make. We love our pets for their whole lives. It is so hard to decide when the suffer out weighs the joy they bring and the happiness they feel. Just know that you and your family did everything possible to give Molly a great life.

This post brought tears to my eyes. Last summer, we had to put our 15 year old Miss Molly to sleep. She was a cocker spaniel and had a lot of health issues. I understand how hard it is. *hugs*

I’m thinking of you and your family right now. It’s really, really hard to make that tough choice, even when you know it’s best. My parents had to make the same decision earlier this year for our 17 year old doggy….It’s still kinda sad when we go home and she’s not there. My heart goes out to your family…… big hugs!

Yes i have had to deal with the loss of a dog due to farmers putting down illegal poison around my house! Devastating, especially as the vet left her in the surgery and we were unable to contact them as they went home for the night, when she could have spent the last night with us.

I know how you feel and my heart goes out to you. It is good to know you loved her so much and she will have appreciated all the care and kindness you gave her.

I am soooo sorry to hear of your loss. Big hugs to you and your family. I lost my 16 year old dachshund a few years back and know how hard it is. We had a private creamation for him and then I kept some of his ashes and my mom has the rest. I put his ashes in a tiny glass bottle on a shelf in my living room next to some pictures of him. Whenever I walk by it, I think of him and he still brings a smile to my face.
Your little Molly knows she was loved and she was lucky to have you and you were lucky to have her in your life. Always keep her in your heart.

Oh girl I know what you’re going through! It’s so hard to lose a pet that is so close to our hearts. When I was young I had a pet rabbit who was always sick. We had to give her shots everyday to help keep her immune system in check. Eventually things continued to go down hill and I had a decision to make. Let her live in pain and continue to suffer or have her put to sleep. I was about 11 years old at the time and the decision was harder than you could imagine. The night before she was to be put to sleep, she died in her sleep. I was a little glad that she had gone on her own but heartbroken that she was gone. I’ve also lost a dog who was near and dear to our family. It’s so hard but try and remember the good memories with you had with your sweet Molly. *hugs*

My parents decided to put down my sweet old cat when we got a new kitten who wouldn’t let her use the litter box. The terrible thing was, they didn’t tell me the day they did it, and I came home asking “Where’s Lacy?” only to find out I didn’t have a chance to say goodbye.

In your case, it sounds like you were strong and did the best thing for Molly. Soon you’ll be able to remember her fondly instead of with sadness. *hugs*

Aw- HUGS!!! My current dog is the only dog I have ever had long enough to witness her aging and inevitable passing. She is terribly overweight (thanks to mom and table scraps all her life), and has a constant hacking cough. I think it’s getting the better of her, and she must be very uncomfortable all the time, but she still has a light in her. I know when the light is gone, that’s when it’s time, and I am utterly dreading it. The worst part is that we are in the process of buying our first home, so I will be moving out of my mom’s place and leaving poor Daisy behind. I’m her primary caregiver, and the only one who walks her, so I know she’ll dwindle quickly without me. :-( It’s so hard losing a loved one, and that definitely includes pets! HUGS again!
