Wedding Band Indecision

June 27th, 2009 @ 1:05 pm by Mrs. Mouse

Over the months, I have changed my mind many a time about what my wedding band should look like. Hey, I think I’m starting to see a pattern here! At first, I was obsessed with the idea of my and the Dude’s wedding bands matching. I thought that matching wedding bands were more symbolic or something. And since the Dude has known from day one that he just wants a simple platinum band, I thought the decision was pretty much made.

Ah, simplicity.

Then I somehow got into my head the idea of buying Celtic rings. I don’t really identify that much with my Irish and Scots-Irish background–I just thought they were pretty. I brought my mom and the Dude with me to a local Celtic boutique, and they both loved the idea of wedding bands with three-dimensional Celtic designs on them.

I thought they had beautiful designs for men, but none of the women’s rings were as delicate as I would’ve liked. I don’t have any pics from the store, but here is an example of a gorgeous men’s Celtic wedding band.

Then, I started looking on Amazon for rings because they have some killer deals, and their selection is pretty much unmatched. I remembered from my engagement-ring-obsession phase that I love baguette diamonds. (If money were no object, this is the ring I would’ve had the Dude buy me.) I started trolling Amazon for baguette-encrusted wedding bands. The platinum ones were a bit pricey, but I found some beautiful white-gold-and-baguette bands.

Pretty, no?

One of the best things about my engagement ring is its simplicity. It will look beautiful with any of the above types of bands. It definitely won’t look too flashy if I add a little more bling to my ring finger. At the same time, it would still look great with a simple platinum band. I have also given up on the idea of the Dude and me having matching bands. We should each get what we want! We’re going to be wearing these for the rest of our lives, so why not?

What do you think, hive? Would it be weird to mix a platinum engagement ring with a white gold wedding band?

I opted for the same metal for both rings — in my case, platinum — because I don’t want them to wear differently over time…and it really wasn’t that big of a price difference for my ring!

Nope, I don’t think it would be weird.

Mr. Star’s ring and mine are TOTALLY unmatching. We actually like that they’re more reflections of each of us than matching styles, because WE are so different! :)

I don’t think it’s a big deal. I have two Tiffany bands - the same exact ring, one is a platinum band my mom gave me with a small diamond, and one is white gold band my grandma gave me with a small emerald. I’ve worn them stacked, on the same finger, for the past five years. The platinum one is slightly heavier, and slightly shinier - the gold is a tad duller - if I look at them REALLY, REALLY closely.

If you’ve found a ring you love and looks good with your engagement ring - I don’t think a metal difference is too big a deal.

It wont look weird (until you need to get the white gold one replated), but having one hard platinum, rubbing constantly on the much softer gold means that your wedding band will get damaged over time, and will need to be replated more often because of the wear and tear of the platinum. So over all - will look fine, but take more upkeep. As far as yours adn Dude’s rings matching - its a personal thing. We really wanted ours to coordinate, so they have similar textures, but they aren’t matching. Havent that little bit of similarity was enough to endear them to us.

I think it would look fine, but as mdarrah said, the platinum will probably rub and damaged on the white gold one over time.

Hey lady!

First off, my (cast silver) engagement ring does *not* match my white gold wedding band. Doesn’t bug me at all, though I don’t wear the engagement ring every day.

But H-town and I got matching bands, and I have to tell you I still geek out 10 months later when we’re holding hands and I see the rings next to each other. There’s something incredibly romantic about them being a pair.

Just my two cents….
xoo.

my e-ring and wedding band are both white gold, but don’t go well together, so I opted for e-ring on the right hand and wedding band on the left. I love it, and I love that husband and I have matching bands.

Hi Miss Mouse,

First, congratulations! And its great that you have a platinum engagement ring, its a ring you will be able to treasure forever.

There are several things you will want to keep in mind if your planning to mix and match white gold and platinum. First of all, white gold isnt naturally white, its alloyed and dipped in rhodium to make it look white. This is a ring you will be wearing daily and the rhodium will definitely wear away over time. So if matching the metals is important it’s good to know now that white gold will only look less and less white as time progresses.

Platinum is a much more dense metal. It’s what makes it so durable and ideal for everyday wear. If you plan to wear them on the same finger, many people have reported that the platinum band will actually wear away at the white gold band– noticeably so.

On a very basic level, the whiteness of white gold will wear away (and need replating) and platinum and white gold wear differently, so if a matching is important, you might not want to mix and match the two metals.

I have a good friend Melissa who was looking at going the route of a white gold celitc engraved ring and what she found out was that in a ring with alot of engraving, the tops of the grooves tend to wear more than the channels and you end up with a white gold ring that looks very a worn two-tone. Pure platinum wont do this.

Platinum can be made into any design you find and that design will last. You might want to check sites like engagementguide.com if your looking for style or design ideas. They have a great gallery and the rings are all platinum.

Hope that helps! Good luck with your searching!

I know I am really late to post… I am just catching up on Wedding Bee in my RSS reader! Hope I’m not too late to be helpful.

My e-ring was white gold, but it soon started to look really really yellow, in contrast to the prongs (platinum). My fiance said that I could get it reset in platinum, so we went to the jewelry store to look at settings.

My fiance was looking at wedding bands for himself and just wanted a super-cheap titanium or tungsten ring but the jeweler warned against that (in case it ever needs to be cut off). He recommended palladium, which is right above Pt on the periodic table so has very similar properties (it’s a bit harder) but is way cheaper (20-25% of the cost of Pt).

He ended up getting palladium, and I am having my e-ring in Pt (jeweler says that setting diamonds in palladium is not yet great) and my wedding band is palladium. They are indistinguishable in terms of color and it will never need to be replated like white gold. It is also about the same price or even less than white gold.
