Houston, We Have a Problem

June 28th, 2009 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Mouse

As a nod to two of the major themes of our wedding (vintage and eco-friendly), the Dude will be wearing the suit my dad wore on my parents’ wedding day, back in September 1979. It’s a light gray, Yves St Laurent three-piece number, pictured below.

Weren’t my parents cute?

My mom informed me that, back in the day, this suit cost more than her dress! From what I know about their wedding, it was probably the most expensive thing purchased. After living together for five years, they were married at my great-grandparents’ house in Mount Vernon, Texas. My mom and dad did absolutely no planning–they just showed up and left all the details to aunts, uncles, and parents. My mom’s father was the “photographer”, and my great aunts provided the cake and punch.

A few months ago, the Dude tried on the suit jacket, and it fit him pretty well. For some reason we both thought he tried on the pants, too.

Since the vest was missing, we had to hunt down a replacement online. It finally came in, and it looked great with the suit. Whew, check that off the list. Or, so I thought.

Suit up!

As it turns out, the Dude never tried on the pants. When I think back on it now, I remember my mom taking a couple of days to find the pants, as they had been separated from the jacket at some point. I remember her handing them to me, on the hanger, on our way out the door as we were leaving to head back to Austin.

So anyway, the Dude tried on the pants, and they, uh… didn’t quite fit.

Uh oh.

We laughed about it for a bit, and then the Dude said, “It’s a really good thing we found out now.” When I thought of it that way, all of the sudden I had visions of him trying the pants on the day before the wedding and me having a full-on panic attack. So, yeah, I was glad we found out sooner rather than later. But I am still really set on the Dude wearing my Dad’s suit; it’s meaningful to both of us—not to mention the color and the cut of it go so well with the vintage vibe that we want.

We took the pants to a seamstress here in Austin. At first she didn’t think she could make them work, but when we explained how important the pants were, she was game. I’m keeping my fingers crossed until we pick them up!

What were some things that unexpectedly went wrong for you during the wedding planning process?

I love your parent’s wedding picture. They look so adorable and happy as can be. I can only wish that I could just make an appearance and have the wedding planned for me by my family.

The suit looks great on the Dude, and I hope the seamstress will make it work.

@KateMW:
Funny you should say that. Am I the only one reminded of the Geico Caveman commercials? ;)
