Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, nonprofit communications Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

We did postcard Save the Dates, and I thought it would be fun to write a note to each recipient like a real postcard. Oh, yes, I did just say I thought it would be fun to write a note on a ton of postcards. Right… in any case, I found myself in starts and fits and I finally made a schedule to get them finished.

Bee reader MissCamera posted in our month twin board (Go August!) that she had the resolution of getting out her Save the Dates by January 15th, which sounded great to me! Unfortunately, mine made it across the Atlantic in February. Why didn’t I just mail them from England? The Royal Mail must hate me, because they’ve done things like sent Mr. D’s suit from England to Colombia (South America) instead of Columbia, MD, USA. I also did a price comparison and found it would be cheaper to send a tiny package to the US and send each STD domestically than to send each postcard from England to the US.

I’m not going to lie to you guys; if I had gotten my act together before we left the States it would have been much, much easier. I thought this would be a fun project and when I sat down and thought about how excited I would be to have these people with us on our wedding day, I was happy to write each of them a note. That said, it took me a very long time for me to get off my bum and finish them.

I also miscounted and sent my mother too many extras so I didn’t have enough to finish sending a few of them out! What’s worse is that my mother misplaced the extras (she had agreed to send) so several guests didn’t end up receiving a Save the Date which I didn’t find out ’til I arrived in the US in June… a bit late to send one at that point.

So without any further ado, I’d like to introduce you to our Save the Dates:

I Forgot to Warn You About Our STD… : wedding diy save the dates Dscf14501 dscf1450

On the other side I wrote a note to each of our guests. We reused the lower bird stamp from our invitations for the Save the Dates.

Regrets? Not being ultra clear about which side Kinko’s should print on. There is a textured linen-esque side and a less textured side on the recycled cardstock. Our invitations printed/embossed perfectly on the less textured side, but the Save the Dates and RSVP cards were printed on the linen-esque side, which led to a few cards not printing quite right and the embossing process not working as well.

I’m glad we embossed these last, because our heat gun died with 10 extra ones to go. Moral of the story? give your embossing gun a rest so it doesn’t overheat and die. The silver lining? I won’t be attempting to emboss anything else for the wedding.

Any one else do postcard STDs or have any other STD mishaps?

I love the birdy so much. And the fact that it has a heart as a wing is even cuter. You did a good job, and I HATE printers… ARGG!!!

Your Save the Dates turned out great, and I love the stamps you used! It’s great that you were able to reuse them for your invitations as well. I read somewhere that you can achieve the same embossed look using an iron, but it can be a tad dangerous if the paper gets too close.

That’s a great save the date! I did postcards as well. It took me four tries to figure out how to communicate clearly with the printing place (ended up going with the UPS store) to get them done. I didn’t do a hand-written note, although I did hand address them. We only sent around 36, so it wasn’t too bad.

Yay for me having a shoutout! Thanks D’Orsay. Unforch I didn’t really make my deadline. I hand delivered a handful by the end of Jan but didn’t get my lazy butt to the post office til Feb. but at least it got done!

I do love the fact that you took the time to write notes to your guests, such a nice touch!

I decided to DIY my STD (alphabet soup much?). After I finally got everything aligned correctly in Microsoft Word I went to print. Apparently the new Windows update doesn’t like HP printers so it refused to print. So I sent the STD to my fiance’s computer but because it is a Mac and has a different version of Word, everything came out wrong and misaligned and the font I fell in love with didn’t exist so it replaced the font with something awful. I almost threw the computer out the window.

The worst was when I went to the post office to send out the STD. The envelope was a bit misshapen because of the luggage tag and I wanted to figure out what it would cost. The guy told me 44 cents so I bought a ton and he told me I would have to come in and hand cancel the envelopes. Cool. No prob. When I came back and hand cancelled them all the lady said, “Wait, you need 20 more cents because it is bulky.” So after I argued with them that the other guy told me 44 cents, I gave up and said, “Fine, just sell me 20 cent stamps.” That is when the lady said, “We don’t sell 20 cent stamps. Only 10 cent stamps.” Sometimes people just make you want to pull your hair out.

After this DIY experience, I think I’m going to leave this stuff to the professionals.

Whew! Thanks for letting me vent.

So cute!! That’s too funny that they sent Mr. D’s suit to Colombia South America…not funny for you at the time, I’m sure, but as least you knew in advance :)
