The All Important First Dance Song…

June 29th, 2009 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Gloss

image

We owe our music selections to our DJ pretty soon (like yesterday) and we cannot decide on a first dance song (Among other things :) )! I feel like there is SO much pressure for this song to be perfect.

Right now our front runner is ’You are the Best Thing’ by Ray LaMontagne.

We both like ’Into the Mystic’ by Van Morrison, but I’m concerned it’s overdone.

Also in the running:

’We are Man and Wife’ by Michelle Featherstone
’The Way I Am’ by Ingrid Michaelson
’By the Way they Dance’ by Jump Little Children
and ’Look After You’ by The Fray

I must be forgetting some great ones - what will your first dance be to?

:-) Ours will be a secret until the wedding day. Three (not very helpful) hints: It’s an oldie from the ’60s, just about two minutes long and a bit faster than a traditional first dance song!

I really like “The Way I Am,” and I think the lyrics are really sweet, too.

We’re having our first dance to “Beyond The Sea” - unsure of the version yet, though.

I danced to “Take Me away” from lifehouse (acoustic version)
But the first 2 songs in the running list were in my wedding video :)

“Something Good This Way Comes” by Jakob Dylan - it’s sweet and mellow :-)

I vote for Ray! That was actually our last dance song, and it sent everyone home on a happy, upbeat note! You could rock it as a first dance song, too. My first dance song was stolen from a Powder Puff post - Ingrid Michaelson’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” cover.

I feel like you seriously just read my page in my wedding notebook named “first dance contenders”. That list is seriously MY list! Just add Let it Be Me by Ray L. (my fave artist OF ALL TIME) and Until You by dave barnes.

We are having a hard time picking a first dance song too. Luckily I sent the other stuff to the DJ, but we’re still stuck on this one.

I vote for the Ray song, I wish I had known about it for our wedding. We danced to Nelly Furtado & Michael Buble’s “Quando, Quando, Quando.”

I agree with MMC4474 — Let It Be Me by Ray would be my choice for first dance song! I thought of using You Are The Best Thing as my recessional song, but chose Power of Love by Huey Lewis & The News because of my dorky obsession for Back to the Future. I do like the idea of using You Are The Best Thing as the last “send off” song, though.

I’ve dreamed of having my first dance to “By the Way They Dance” since about 14. Honestly, it was the only thing I ever imagined on my wedding day. Still an all time favorite band :)

We danced to Ingrid Michaelson! It was totally cute, and my bridesmaids clapped along, and it was perfectly short.

We’re having “A Song for You”, sung by Willie Nelson. It’s supposed to be an apology for an estranged lover but we love the words anyways
“And I love you in a place
where there’s no space and time
I love you for my life
You are a friend of mine

And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing
My song for you”

Mr Norris is a musician so the idea of love/life as a song and performance is particularly well suited for us.

I’ve never heard Into the Mystic as a first dance song. I adore it!

I also agree with whoever said there is nothing dorky about Back to the Future. I’m watching it right now!

If you like Ingrid Michaelson, what about her version of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love”? And if you like Michelle Featherstone, you could do “Rest of My Life.”

We did John Legend, “Stay With You”

Ahh we danced to Into the Mystic…it was fun…just love Van Morrison in general. Like Tupelo Honey and other ones too!
The only tough thing about Into the Mystic was the rhythm of it…we were taking a few dance classes and it turns out it’s a “bolero” so quick quick slow with hips moving! It was fun :)

The way I am and Into the Mystic were on our list as well - but we danced to “Endless Love,” by Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross!

Ooo, I hafta add that I looooved the song Sister and BIL Bruschetta picked — Spiral Starecase’s “More Today Than Yesterday.” It was so peppy and cheerful, and all the guests started singing along. :-)

We danced to “History in the Making” by Darius Rucker. My husband heard it one day and called me saying he had tears in his eyes the words were so perfect. I couldnt say no to that.

@mmc4474 — Michael J Fox is the man. To this day, I have some weird attraction to him. Not like a crush, just admiration! And I could watch back the the future over and over and over — oh wait, I already did that for most of my pre-teen years! “Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads!”

Winter Birds by Ray is my absolute favorite song of his:

The stream can’t contain such the withering rain,
And from the pasture the fence it is leaning away
The clouds crack and growl
Like some great cat on the prowl
Crying out, “I am, I am” over and over again

The days grow short
As the nights grow long
The kettle sings it’s tortured song
As many petalled kiss I place upon her brow,
Oh, my lady, Lady I am loving you now

Sigh.
Tragic & lovely all at the same time is my type of song ;)

My FI and I will be dancing to “Into the Mystic”, Van is best! If the song means something to you guys, who cares if its a popular song! The only thing that should matter is that the two of you love it and it’s special to you both!

Great minds think alike! We’re incorporating “We Are Man And Wife” into our ceremony, and “You Are The Best Thing” is our first dance song!

I love “we are man and wife”! I first heard it when Haley and Nathan got married on One Tree Hill and have loved it ever since! personally, I love most any and all Dave Barnes songs as first dance picks and also Matt Wertz “I Will Not Take My Love Away” (it’s kind of short, but beautiful none the less):)

Our song is You Are The Best Thing! It makes us so happy, it’s such a fun song!! So I guess I’m partial to that song :)
Our second choice was To Make You Feel My Love by Adele.

I’ve always liked Til Kingdom Come by Coldplay too!

I just recently got turned onto Ray and I absolutely adore him. I hope to incorporate him into our wedding somehow but…I don’t think I’ll be able to convince him to use him as a first dance song. I love his “Hold You In My Arms” the most though…another beautiful song!! His songs have such an old-school, classic touch and yet they are so current.

When choosing a song, don’t worry about if it’s overdone. If you both like it, choose it! It’s about YOU, no one else.

Btw, one of my bridesmaids just introduced me to Ray LaMontagne yesterday and I’m in love! She’s using a few of his songs. They’re so dreamy!

I decided not to choose one song. I downloaded a music editing program and spliced 5 songs together. It is just an idea, but really helps with the indecisive bride who does not want to choose.

I always loved “Not Fire Not Ice” by Ben Harper, it’s a little slow, but if we weren’t having a band I’d choose that! Also think Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliat’s “Lucky” is wonderful!

We’re doing the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows”…

The first few words of the lyrics kinda freaked out my super-superstitious Filipino relatives, but we are still doing it no matter what!

Songs are always open for interpretations, anyway! ;-)

“Into the Mystic.” May be overdone (I have never heard it at a wedding), but a classic. These “new-fangled” songs seem slightly cliched & flash-in-the-panish. We had “Wild Horses” by The Stones, my fave band.

We’ve been planning on “you’re the best thing” as well. We’ve loved it since the first time we heard it on the radio over a year ago. However, after Miss CB’s post about Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” we’re torn between the two. I’m tempted to do a first & second dance :o)

My husband and I picked “The Lady in My Life” by Michael Jackson from the Thriller Album. The lyrics are sweet (especially from MJ) but it does last a full 6 minutes!

My three contenders right now are:

Van Morrison-Sweet Thing “sugar baby with your champagne eyes and saint like smile” (OH MAN!)
Ari Hest -I’ve got you “sing for me baby soft as a whisper, every single breath a spine-tingling elixr” (That’s almost as sexy as Into The Mystic!)
Crosby Stills Nash & Young-Our House “Play your love songs all night long for me” (It’s just a sweet and classic little song.)

They’re all classic love songs but I think that Van will always be my number one pick. We don’t even know if we’re doing a first dance so I’ll have to wait until a decision is made before I pick THE song!
