The All Important First Dance Song... : wedding music Firstda image

We owe our music selections to our DJ pretty soon (like yesterday) and we cannot decide on a first dance song (Among other things :) )! I feel like there is SO much pressure for this song to be perfect.

Right now our front runner is ’You are the Best Thing’ by Ray LaMontagne.

We both like ’Into the Mystic’ by Van Morrison, but I’m concerned it’s overdone.

Also in the running:

’We are Man and Wife’ by Michelle Featherstone
’The Way I Am’ by Ingrid Michaelson
’By the Way they Dance’ by Jump Little Children
and ’Look After You’ by The Fray

I must be forgetting some great ones - what will your first dance be to?

:-) Ours will be a secret until the wedding day. Three (not very helpful) hints: It’s an oldie from the ’60s, just about two minutes long and a bit faster than a traditional first dance song!

I really like “The Way I Am,” and I think the lyrics are really sweet, too.

We’re having our first dance to “Beyond The Sea” - unsure of the version yet, though.

I danced to “Take Me away” from lifehouse (acoustic version)
But the first 2 songs in the running list were in my wedding video :)

“Something Good This Way Comes” by Jakob Dylan - it’s sweet and mellow :-)

I vote for Ray! That was actually our last dance song, and it sent everyone home on a happy, upbeat note! You could rock it as a first dance song, too. My first dance song was stolen from a Powder Puff post - Ingrid Michaelson’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” cover.

I love The Way I Am, but I let Mr. Bunny pick out our song.

I feel like you seriously just read my page in my wedding notebook named “first dance contenders”. That list is seriously MY list! Just add Let it Be Me by Ray L. (my fave artist OF ALL TIME) and Until You by dave barnes.

We are having a hard time picking a first dance song too. Luckily I sent the other stuff to the DJ, but we’re still stuck on this one.

I vote for the Ray song, I wish I had known about it for our wedding. We danced to Nelly Furtado & Michael Buble’s “Quando, Quando, Quando.”

I agree with MMC4474 — Let It Be Me by Ray would be my choice for first dance song! I thought of using You Are The Best Thing as my recessional song, but chose Power of Love by Huey Lewis & The News because of my dorky obsession for Back to the Future. I do like the idea of using You Are The Best Thing as the last “send off” song, though.

I’ve dreamed of having my first dance to “By the Way They Dance” since about 14. Honestly, it was the only thing I ever imagined on my wedding day. Still an all time favorite band :)

@northwestgirl19: there is nothing dorky about back to the future! or Huey Lewis!

We danced to Ingrid Michaelson! It was totally cute, and my bridesmaids clapped along, and it was perfectly short.

We’re having “A Song for You”, sung by Willie Nelson. It’s supposed to be an apology for an estranged lover but we love the words anyways
“And I love you in a place
where there’s no space and time
I love you for my life
You are a friend of mine

And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing
My song for you”

Mr Norris is a musician so the idea of love/life as a song and performance is particularly well suited for us.

I’ve never heard Into the Mystic as a first dance song. I adore it!

I also agree with whoever said there is nothing dorky about Back to the Future. I’m watching it right now!

If you like Ingrid Michaelson, what about her version of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love”? And if you like Michelle Featherstone, you could do “Rest of My Life.”

We did John Legend, “Stay With You”

Ahh we danced to Into the Mystic…it was fun…just love Van Morrison in general. Like Tupelo Honey and other ones too!
The only tough thing about Into the Mystic was the rhythm of it…we were taking a few dance classes and it turns out it’s a “bolero” so quick quick slow with hips moving! It was fun :)
