Listening to Signs

June 30th, 2009 @ 5:31 pm by Mrs. Quiche

Not signs in the Five Man Electrical Band “long haired freaky people, need not apply” sense, but in the figurative sense.

Drawing by Brian Andreas

I’ve expresses my love of Brian Andreas in the past (his quote even made an appearance on our invites!). This story is the very first one of his that I read, some 6 years ago, and I was hooked:

I used to wait for a sign, she said, before I did anything. Then one night I had a dream and an angel in black tights came to me and said, ‘You can start any time now.’ And then I said, ‘Is this a sign?’ And the angel started laughing and I woke up. Now, I think the whole world is filled with signs, but if there’s no laughter, I know they’re not for me.

I’ve read a lot of blogs where a bride books/buys something based on a sign. There are a lot of cultures where signs are extremely significant. While I definitely think my life is grounded in reality, I have to admit that I’ve listened to signs in the past.

For example, I have had this pick since I was in junior high. Yes, you read that correctly - a pick. Not a brush or a comb, a pick. I think I am the last person on the face of the earth who still uses one(?). Anyway, I LOVED this $5 Goody pick for years. When I’ve left it somewhere (when visiting out of town friends), I’ve had it FedExed to me. Anyway, this pick has been with me through everything - high school, swim meets, broken hearts, happy times - and it has been all over the world - France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Mexico, Jamaica. Oh, Jamaica. My little pick accompanied Mr. Quiche and me on our “venue research” trip to Jamaica last year.

I wish I had a picture of my teal beauty to share with you…but this stock image will have to do. sigh.

AND I LOST it (lost it in the literal sense this time, as in, it’s GONE!). I talked to my mom while I was down there (she knows the plight of the pick) and actually said, “Is this a sign that we shouldn’t get married in Jamaica?” We briefly considered it… then realized that it may be a bit drastic. I mean, who is silly enough to pay attention to something like that? Not me*. We booked our wedding in Jamaica and it was absolutely perfect. The loss of my beloved pick didn’t make it rain on our wedding day, didn’t make my dress fall down, etc. Phew.

I know this is a silly post, but we all need to laugh every now and then. :) So tell me, what signs have you received and what did you do/not do, buy/not buy, book/not book, etc. because of them?

* Okay, I lied. I lost it at the Hibiscus Lodge Hotel. It’s possible that this contributed to my disdain for that place & our subsequent booking of the Coyaba. Shh… don’t tell anyone!

LOL! I still use one too! And I HATE it when I lose one - I’m working on three plus years with this one. Nothing compared to junior high, but still. They’ve gotten SO hard to find, but they’re so much easier to use than regular combs!

I look for signs all over the place, so I don’t think your silly at all ;-) So far no signs for the wedding, but I’ll keep the hive posted.
Wait, maybe the super hot wedding this weekend was a sign that I should plan for a super hot wedding of my own? hmmmm

Haha! Cute post. You actually used a pick for all those years? That’s pretty funny. Did you have to buy a replacement pick? :)

I still use a pick! It’s the only thing that I can get through my curly hair!

As for signs, I don’t necessarily look for them but I always think about things in retrospect, like “Oh, I should’ve known such-and-such was a sign that ____ would happen.”

Ha, I love my pick! I have tried other hair detangling apparatus but none of it works with my curls. But I admit, I have gone through several and never cared much about losing them. I try to keep one in a few different places - gym bag, travel bag, sometimes at a friend’s house, etc.

Haha, aww man, I hate when things like that happen!! Also, I’ve been obsessed with Brian Andreas for about 10 years ago- he is the best! People think I’m weird cuz his artwork is not all that attractive but his quotes are AMAZING!

Aww, you’re so cute, Quiche! I had a comb that I loooooved for years and years, and then I lost it one tragic day. I’ve never been able to find one that was as perfect as that comb- it was pink, wide-toothed with a handle! How awesome is that?!

@Miss Powder Puff: How dreadful! Mine was teal plastic with the ends dipped in white then black. I have purchased so many since then & none of them compare. sigh :)

I too had a pick from the 80’s, mine was purple and then was dipped in white then pink. It was the best pick ever. I don’t know where I lost it but I did. Now I use a lavendar pick, however, it does not compare to my purple Goody. I was told once by a hairstylist that using a pick over a brush is much better for your hair. I never ever brush my hair.

I too look for signs all over the place. But I recently gave up on what I thought was a sign and just ignored it. Sometimes you can drive yourself crazy.
