The Bees’ Hair & Makeup Budgets

June 30th, 2009 @ 2:38 pm by Real Budgets

Today in our Real Bee Budgets series, the bees share their expenses for getting pretty-fied!

~~~
Mrs. Canary’s Hair & Makeup
Hair: Stacy Pitt
Price: $1,300 (Includes: total of 10 heads)
Three styles:
Tea Ceremony: Down-do, finger curls, vintage look
Photos/Ceremony/Cocktail Hour/First Dance: Updo, veil placement for both birdcage and cathedral veil:
Reception: Updo, loose, tucked pony tail
Stacy is quite popular with NYC brides and it’s because she is a pro with all things hair related. She worked with an assistant from 7AM – 7PM and completed 10 different hairstyles each complementing the makeup. Stacy was able to magically set my stick straight hair into the most bouncy curls and then later set it into a perfect updo that lasted for most of the day, before helping me fix it into a comfortable, yet classy pony tail so I could dance the night away.
Makeup: Sally Duvall
Price: $1,000 (Includes: Unlimited faces)
Sally was great to work with from the moment we met. I gave her a few of my inspiration photos at our trial and she was able to articulate makeup details I liked and create a look that highlighted all my best features. On the wedding day, Sally received rave reviews from my mom, bridesmaids, and aunts for flawless, glamorous, yet natural makeup. With a day rate, Sally traveled with us the entire day (until 7PM) to give everyone touch-ups.
Day After Shoot:
Hair and Makeup: Sachiko Yanase
Price: $300
Style: Down do with curls
Sachiko is a NYC favorite for hair and makeup and it’s not hard to figure out why—she is amazing with both hair and makeup and can work quickly yet generate amazing results!
Mrs. Flamingo’s Hair & Makeup
Hair: Coiffure Oasis, Laval, QC.
Price: Gift from Stepmother (I believe approx. $100-120)
Makeup - Friend
“My very good friend is a makeup artist and offered to do my makeup as part of her wedding gift. It only cost me a couple of items I no longer had in my makeup case (eye shadow, fake lashes, foundation)—about $30.”
I went to the hair salon the night before the wedding to wash and prepare my finger curls for the wedding. I then showed up Saturday morning to get my whole vintage look. And all my girls were getting their hair done at the same place. It was super fun.
I loved my overall look. I felt so beautiful - just how a bride should feel on her wedding day. I would seriously have finger curls all the time if I could… but we’re not in the 1950s! ;)
Mrs. Tiramisu’s Hair & Makeup
Hair & Makeup: Colleen Smith of Salon Rubio, Pownal, Maine
Price: $300 included trial hair and make up, wedding day hair and makeup, and travel (approx 1.25 hours each way)
$75 each for hair and makeup for bridesmaids, $60 for Mother of Bride
Colleen did my hair from the time I was 12 until I left for college; when I moved away and we lost touch. After TWO terrible hair and makeup trials I called her, and I’m so glad that I did. Not only did I love the work she did, it was so wonderful to have a familiar and cheerful face around on the morning of the wedding. I just adore Colleen, and so did the rest of the bridal party.
Mrs. Caramel’s Hair & Makeup
Hair: Hairday staff (they switch around), Los Angeles, CA
Makeup: Jessica Lee at Hairday
Price: $300 including hair & makeup
BM hair: $75 each
BM makeup: JAC Beauty as a gift!
—————————
Mrs. Penguin’s Hair & Makeup
Hair: Erica Head West Salon, Folsom CA. (I went to the salon.)
Price: Wash and blowout only - $90
Makeup: Lisa Deniz for Bobbi Brown, Roseville CA. (She traveled to me.)
Price: $175 for bride’s makeup (travel included in price), $125 for other bridal party members/moms.
There’s another one of those “bridal” ripoffs… $90 for a blowout? I could get a nice cut and color for $130 around here. But the salon is a great place, and I don’t regret it at all. If you’re not looking for a real “bridal do” (I just wore my hair down), consider not really telling the salon that you’re getting married. I find it hard to believe that that’s a normal charge for a blowout!
I LOVED having my MUA travel to me. I had so many things to do that day, it was nice to sit at home and get my makeup done. I felt that $175 was a fair price for this service, and Lisa is incredibly calming and really friendly… just what I needed for the wedding morning jitters!
Mrs. Butterfly’s Hair & Makeup
Hair & Makeup (for everyone): $600
—————————
Mrs. Pineapple’s Hair & Makeup
Hair and Make-up: Jamie at Philip Pelusi Hair Salon
Price: $150 including tip (a gift from Momma P)
—————————
Miss Joey’s Hair & Makeup
Hair and Makeup: Ashley and Julia at A.J. Hair and Make-Up
Price: $115 including tip
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the airbrushing. It was so light; it didn’t feel like I had makeup on. The hair was perfect and just what I wanted.
Mrs. Plumeria’s Hair & Makeup
Price: $65
Price: $0
Mrs. Kiwi’s Hair & Makeup
—————————
Mrs. Corn’s Hair & Makeup
Hair: Meredith at Bangs Salon in Cranston, RI
Makeup: Mary at Studio 505
Price: $1,380
—————————
Mrs. Cherry Pie’s Hair & Makeup
Vendor: Sage Salon and Spa at Whitefish, MT
Total Price: $430
Price Breakdown:
  • Price for bridal style: $60 (including 2 trials)
  • Price for bridesmaid up-do: $45 x 2
  • Price for short hair style/blow out: $30 x3
  • Travel Fee & Hourly: $150
  • On our wedding day, the ladies from Sage Salon and Spa came to Lake McDonald Lodge to style me and my bridesmaids. We had debated making the trip to the spa to save money, but as Whitefish is over an hour away, it wasn’t feasible. Time is, as they say, money, so we bit the bullet and paid the travel fee. But it was worth it because the ladies made us all look fabulous.
    The trial and error process was invaluable as it took us quite a while to decide on the final wedding day hair style. I absolutely LOVED my wedding day hair, which was a low, criss-cross chignon. Looking at photos, I would have made one or two minor tweaks, but it was pretty much a work of art. It worked well by itself, with a veil, and with my hair flower, and it stayed intact all night.
    REGARDING MAKEUP: After one makeup trial in May with Sage, I decided that I would do my own makeup and I’m glad I did. I spent the money I would have used on the makeup application to buy some awesome products and made myself look beautiful.
    A helpful hint for brides who (like me) aren’t planning on having hair and makeup done: tell the bridesmaids early. Oh my goodness, they were shocked that after 30+ years of doing their own hair and makeup, I was expecting them to be able to do their own hair and makeup. There was a lot of this:
    Them: How do you want our hair?
    Me: Whatever looks good on you.
    Them: Yeah, but up? Down? What?
    Me: Whatever looks good on you.
    My hairstylist/make-up artist (who owns her own company and travels to you but also charges a travel fee) will be doing 5 hairstyles and 4 makeup applications. What would the recommended tip be? (Sounds like a math question for a final exam doesn’t it??? lol)
    @Sarah: Haha, too funny!
    And Pengy, that is SO true about the “rip off”. As soon as you attach the word “wedding” to anything, the cost seems to magically double. I’m trying to keep the “W” word on the dl.
    I plan on upgrading my products and having my BM who is a makeup artist do my makeup. For the hair, I am leaving it to the pros.
    @Miss Labrador - I agree with, use the “W” word sparingly.
    Not sure how his didn’t get on there, but the cost of my hair and makeup included myself, my mom and three bridesmaids…plus both trials.
    Wow! Everyone’s hair looks lovely, but I can’t believe how pricey that is! I had a local Ann Arbor area stylist do my hair for $50, and it looked fabulous! I guess it’s all about location! I tried to calculate how much my vendors were making an hour (including any prep work), and if it was SIGNIFICANTLY (2-3X my 70K salary) more than I made myself, then I thought long and hard about how important each investment was.
