I have to admit, I’m not a wedding veteran. I’ve only been to a few, and the last one was over five years ago. But, if were going to a destination wedding as a guest, I’m guessing I would like it if the bride and groom gave me some recommendations on activities to do in the area. Our wedding, although not in Mexico or the Caribbean, happens to be a destination wedding for about 95% of our guests (including ourselves). And, while we don’t know the area extremely well, there are a few things we can recommend.
My favorite thing that we’re hoping our guests will do? Take a couple of extra hours and drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. From the airport, our venue happens to be in the middle of a big loop. Guests can either drive to and from the airport on the same two-hour windy mountain pass (also beautiful) or they can drive the two-hour road in and take the three-and-a-half hour long way out (or vice versa) through the park. Here’s what the most direct, two-hour route looks like on a map:

Here’s what that drive (through Berthoud Pass) looks like in person:

Like Ms. Gloss, the Joeys also held a little wine tasting last weekend. We had 10 random friends over to try the 7 bottles of white and 3 bottles of bubbly we managed to gather the weekend before. I wish we had pictures of the night. It was a lot of fun. I also wish I had pictures of the tasting sheets. We numbered the bottles 1 to 10 and then gave everyone a sheet of paper with the numbers 1 though 10 on it. We asked everyone to comment on each wine they tasted. Some did the simple yay or nay, while others were really descriptive of what they tasted and liked about each wine. It worked really well.
Despite everyone’s palettes, we had 2 overwhelming winners for the white and the Cava. We initially were looking for a $7 bottle of white and $10 bottle of Cava. When our red selection came in super cheap ($5.91 including tax), we decided we could look at $9 whites, too.
And the winners? Everyone loved the 2008 Barnard Griffin Fume Blanc. It was the most expensive wine in the lot, but it was really good. We were told that we would get a 15% discount if we paid in cash or by debit card, so that brought the bottle down to $8.28 including tax.
The Cava we selected was a 2000 Freixenet Cava Brut (sorry, I don’t know how to list its name).

It was a $12-15 bottle of Cava that local wine wholesaler, the Wine Outlet, was selling for $9 a bottle.

I was not originally considering wearing a birdcage veil! I always thought they were gorgeous and so chic, but didn’t think I would be the bride to pull one off.
I happened to try one on at a bridal salon one day while I was looking for something else (shoes to solve my shoe crisis, I think it was!). I posted the picture on my Facebook and immediately had several comments about how amazing it was and how well it synched with my style. I took a second look and agreed that I actually loved it! The only thing I didn’t love was the $200 price tag on the one I tried on. So I decided to make my own. For less than $30 and an afternoon spent crafting with Blonde Bridesmaid, we were able to create this:

Happy Friday everyone!
As promised, I am sharing this delicious, refreshing, addicting drink! So get ready to get some chips and guacamole, a margarita glass, and some salt because here it comes!!

I combined a couple different recipes that I found and came up with this one. It’s a keeper! Just for those of you who are still wondering what prickly pears are, they are actually the fruit that grow on top of the flat cactus pad. Some say that they taste like a cross between a melon and a fig. I say they taste amazing!

Based on the title, you’re probably thinking this post is going to be about our linens, but it’s about calligraphy. As you learned in my fruity shower post, BM F and I met in college. She would sit and practice her handwriting when she needed something to do with her hands. I can’t tell you how many times we’d be sitting in the cafeteria and I’d look down to see “Napkin” scrolled across her napkin (natch) a bazillion times in the most beautiful handwriting you’ve ever seen.
My handwriting isn’t bad; it worked great for our Engagement Party invites and STDIs, but it is more casual. So, naturally, I asked BM F if she would do the calligraphy for our wedding invitations.
Here are the samples she gave me today…
Option A:

A few months ago, we got the news that our wedding was going to be featured in The Knot Texas magazine. A few weeks ago, we got an email from our photographer asking if we’d received our copies yet. When we replied that we had yet to receive it, Cesar and Tanya let us know that, not only was it in the magazine, it was a five page spread!
Here’s the spread, and you can also check it out online:

My latest obsession is Photoscape. When posting pictures, I do my best to resize and touch-up photos to make me look better than I do in real life.
Being the total amateur that I am with Photoshop, it takes me what seems like forever to do anything! With Photoscape, resizing and quick touch-ups are a cinch!
Within the Photoscape Editor, resizing can be done with two-clicks:
1) Click on the resize drop-down menu

2) Specify the pixel for the longer length. Voila! How easy and quick was that?!

Yes - I did! Twenty-six-point-two-miles of wedded bliss!
Mr. Cubbie and I thought this would be a good goal for our getting-in-shape-for-the-wedding pipe dream. Mr. Bear Cub is from Portland, and has always wanted to run the Portland Marathon. Unfortunately, two years ago while he was training for it, his step dad died in a plane crash (while on a rescue mission!). This happened about a month before the race - he would have had to be running 40+ miles a week to adequately maintain his training (and not risk injury!). He went to the funeral, and pulled out of the race. A month after, we ran the Rio Grande half marathon together.
Running is something that has truly brought us together as a couple. You need to trust your running buddy - both to help you and to challenge you. I started out not being able to run even a mile… and then 7 months later, I was running 13.1 of them.
Running in Portland is even better.
I won’t show you guys my original inspiration board, as it literally has nothing to do with our wedding now! My original colors were pomegranate and gold—not exactly what comes to mind when you hear the phrase “English garden”.
As the wedding planning progressed and I started to develop more of a cohesive “feel” for the wedding, I decided to add two colors to the palette: the palest of pinks and cream. For now, the pomegranate is tentatively staying as an accent color, mostly in the bridesmaids’ dresses; there are a few gold accents thrown in there as well. However, being the perfectionist that I am, I’m quite happy to edit my little heart out until I have every detail exactly right. We’ll have to see whether pomegranate makes the final cut!
I came across this beautiful inspiration board in the archives of Snippet and Ink, and it made me completely rethink our color scheme! Maybe I should edge out the pomegranate/berry color for good in favor of pale pink, cream, and vintage gold! My bridesmaids have already bought their adorable berry-colored dresses (which were also worn by Mrs. Cherry Pie’s beautiful bridesmaids), but maybe we can figure something out that goes better with the new color scheme.
I’ve never won the lottery, but I imagine the feeling is similar. I woke up early 2 days after I flew back to America, partly from jet-lag and partly from excitement. Mr. D’s interview with the Embassy occurred only 2 short days after I left England. As you know, he (we) was approved!
I asked Mr. D to write up his account so that if you’re going through this process, maybe this will help ease your fears and frustrations. You can also find several personal accounts on VisaJourney.com under embassy reviews.
~~~
My appointment was scheduled for 9:00AM, but I was reliably informed by Miss D’orsay that there would be a queue, so I should get there early. I duly set my alarm for 6:00AM, with a plan of getting to the embassy around 8:00AM to scope out the situation. You may think 2 hours is a long time to get ready, but I had to drop off my bags as, inconveniently, the embassy does not allow you to take backpacks/suitcases or any electronic devices (including mobile phones) into the building. Unfortunately, it was at that point I realized my first FAIL — I would no longer have a concept of time without my phone.
I arrived at the embassy, and there was a small queue, so I asked someone for the time. It was 8:15AM, and I remember that my letter stated that I would not be allowed into the embassy more than 30 minutes before my scheduled time. I decided to take my chances and joined the back of the queue.
I’ve written way too many of these dress posts, ladies. I’ve shared body image issues, I’ve lamented about length, and I’ve waffled on my oh-so-confident choices not once, not twice, but thrice. I’m not going to make you sift through my insecurities and justifications for my wishy-washiness. I’m just going to show you the fourth (and final) dress of this four-dress bride.
With less than three weeks until the wedding, the stress of everything is really starting to wear on me.
I really don’t have that much wedding-related stuff to do (at least, stuff that’s very important), but I do have to move out of my apartment by June 30 — which includes slapping a layer of paint on the walls because the roomie and I decided to get creative with color about a year ago.
On top of that, I really want to have everything done by next Friday so that I have a full week to take care of any last-minute details that pop up.
Everything really got to me last night, and I ended up crying on the phone with Mr. Bunny.
“There’s not enough time!” I wailed. “I’m not ready to get married!”
Mr. Bunny struggled not to laugh. Apparently I make funny noises when I cry.
“Of course you’re ready,” he said, matter-of-factly. “You’re more ready than I am.”
“I’m not emotionally ready!” I insisted, still crying. “We haven’t met with the pastor enough yet!” (As background, Mr. Bunny and I went to 2-3 months worth of counseling with a Christian counselor and have met with our pastor 3 times already.)
“You’re totally ready,” Mr. B said. “Besides, the wedding isn’t the end of everything. We’ll still be here after the wedding.”
