Today is the first time I’ve been back to my parents’ house in Los Angeles since I seriously started planning the decor. Eight months ago (the last time I was home), we had just booked our venue and I was on the search for The Dress, so things are feeling more nailed down this time. It’s funny how, when you’re on the search for something, everything you’ve been looking at for the past 20 years all of a sudden appeals to you more. This time around, it’s decor items.
As I got settled in, I started to notice little antiques around the house that would look adorable adorning our escort tables or dessert tables. I was already in love with weddings in which the guests bring simple personal touches to contribute to the decor, so bringing stuff from my childhood home seems natural. My mom mentioned she’d be happy to bring some things along (via plane) to our wedding in Colorado if I just made her a list. Here are a few of the items I’ve come across:

It’s true, I’m back on US soil! It’s taken a bit of time for me to adjust to not only the time, but simply being back in America. It’s easy to forget after awhile just how different the US and the UK can be. For example, since being home, I spent almost 2 hours grocery shopping just to fill a tiny basket (the store was so big!) and the other day I turned down the left side of a median in to a shopping plaza… way to go.
I also have some fantastic news to share with you (I mean, aside from the fact I can go to bee meet-ups now).

How did this happen?
Rule #1 of alterations - if you can, bring someone with you. I had been worried about going to my first fitting by myself (4 of my 5 bridesmaids don’t live in Chicago), but the experience was perfectly fine except for from a photographic standpoint. I would have loved to have a ton of pictures snapped, but of course, the seamstress needed to be pinning, not snapping!
Check out my awesome photography and the front of my beautiful dress:

If you look at the waist, you’ll see the flower I ordered a while back from 5eizen on Etsy. As a part of the alterations process, the flower will be attached.

“Make an elegant invitation statement without the fuss. Stylish invitation sets with matching envelopes, reception and response cards included.”
I’ve had this centerpiece idea in mind for a while, but I couldn’t get MOH-Ho to picture it right to save my life! Last night we finally got together and did a small version mock-up (the real one will have 5 vases instead of 3). We spent some quality time bringing my vision to life:
The purple circles invites I made for MOH-Ho’s wedding was my original inspiration for these. Though they did not turn out to have much resemblance, I think they still fit together quite nicely. My expectations for these were similar to that for my own centerpieces - affordable, not wasteful, easy to set up, unique, incorporates florals… plus, the added top criteria of making MOH-Ho happy. I think I got checks on each of these.
Here’s how it was done:

I feel kinda funny telling my friends what they should wear. Who am I to tell them to buy a $150(ish) dress they might (probably not) wear again? If my bridesmaids want to all wear the same dress, same color, that’s fine by me, but I want them to be comfortable in what they wear to my wedding.
A comfortable bridesmaid is a happy bridesmaid, and a happy bridesmaid is a happy bride! (I know, how self-serving of me.)
Luckily, mismatched bridesmaids dresses are becoming a popular way to inject originality into your wedding day!
This first pic (above) is one of my favorites - everyone’s in a shade of green or blue, and some of them are wearing patterned dresses! It’s all about the effect on the whole. If you stick to just one color, that color might become overpowering. A spectrum of one or two colors, when put together, results in a wonderfully rich palette! Plus, I love how this means that you & the ’maids will look the best when you’re together as a group!

No, I’m not talking about a cheesy late-night phone commercial, I’m talking about a really cute bridal or bachelorette party idea. I’m sure I’m not the only one on Weddingbee going to festivities for other brides, so I thought I’d share a gift idea I wish I’d come up with.
For my friend Krissi’s recent bachelorette party, her sister, Britt, found this really cute poem online:
“What do you mean ‘the groom’s tux is in Austin’”?!? , I asked the woman behind the counter as she stared back at me blankly, clearly not grasping the severity of the situation. She simply repeated herself offering no assistance whatsoever. I immediately grabbed my BlackBerry and dialed Mr. L, silently praying he hadn’t left the house yet.
“Hi honey… where are you?” He was slow to respond, fearing I’d scold him for getting a late start.
“Um… we’re on the road, about 30 minutes from SA… I know we were supposed to leave earlier, but…” I cut him off to explain that not only did we owe a sizable balance on the tuxes but additionally his was being held hostage in A-town. My sweet sweet groom kept calm and told me to just pay for the tuxes and to call best man Ryan, believing that he had gotten an even later start (remember that the bachelor party had wound down mere hours earlier). While still on the phone with Mr. L, I barked orders at my sister to call Ryan and explain the situation, begging him to stop by the Men’s Warehouse before he left, hoping with every fiber of my being that he hadn’t hit the road yet.
Fate was on our side that afternoon as we learned Ry had just left his place and hadn’t passed the MW yet. He was quick to point out that this unplanned stop would cause him and GMSeth to be a tad later to the rehearsal, but that it wouldn’t be a problem. Back on the BlackBerry I dialed our rock star coordinator, Becky, to let her know we’d all be running a bit late to the rehearsal while I tossed my credit card to Kelly to settle up the tab for the remaining tuxes.
The sky was still charcoal as we headed back to the hotel to regroup. While my sister went to the room to freshen up I hit the hotel bar for (another) glass of Pinot, as my nerves were shot. I took the wine outside and I noticed the clouds began to clear and a sliver of sun started to peek through. I did a little happy dance as I headed inside and became even more excited when I ran into Mr. L and GMRyan M. (we had 3 Ryans in our party!) in the lobby. I hadn’t seen Mr. P in over 24 hours and was ecstatic to be reunited.

“I knew what I was getting.” That’s what my high school calculus teacher Mrs. Edgar said after she told us the story of her proposal.
Apparently, she and future husband (our gym teacher) were sitting around one afternoon. He was watching basketball and she was flipping through a wedding magazine because one of her friends was getting hitched in the near future.
Spotting a particularly lovely dress, she said, “That’s the dress I’m going to wear when I get married.”
Mr. Edgar, without turning his head said, (or so the legend goes*) “Do you wanna?”
Slightly confused, Mrs. Edgar responded, “Do I wanna what?”
“Do you wanna get married?”
The answer was yes, of course. And she wore that very dress to her wedding.
*Supposedly the first thing he did upon entering the honeymoon suite post-wedding was flip on the football game. Yes, you heard me right.
My high school self was horrified at this story, as were all my friends.

Given the amount of time, thought and indecision that’s going in to choosing Mr. Mary Jane’s wedding ring, I am really glad that my engagement ring and band came as a set!
Actually, the designer who thought up my ring felt it would be best with two bands, like this:
[source]
I don’t want two wedding bands. I prefer rings that don’t have too much heft. But I really loved this wedding set! Specifically, I liked that it had a flush fit band (in spite of the oblong setting). So many rings have wavy or otherwise not “bandy” bands… and I wasn’t really feeling this type of thing (pretty though it is):

That’s right. Mr. Cowboy Boot and I are forgoing that tradition. “But what about the pictures with the cake? You won’t have those?” My mom asked when I told her. “Eh,” I replied, “neither of us really likes cake all that much.” Sure, I’ve loved the design of wedding cakes and even swooned over a few, but their aesthetic beauty doesn’t make up for their price tag–at least not at our wedding. But that doesn’t mean no one will be eating sweets after dinner.
In lieu of wedding cake, we’re opting for a seasonally-fresh pie bar, a la this picture:

Since it will be fall at the time of our wedding, pies and crisps will mark the season.
Contrary to popular belief, wedding registries are not that much fun to put together. In fact, it’s a lot of work and it loses its novelty very quickly. I believe people get this confused with the actual bridal showers where you RECEIVE the gifts, not REGISTER for them. That was your PSA for the day. You’re welcome.
Okay okay! I know not all of you feel the same way I do.
In fact, I was really looking forward to the registry fun when I first got engaged. So much so that I started on them about 3 weeks after we became “official”. This was done in part because I was afraid that when the time would come around to do this (according to a suggested wedding time line) I’d be too busy with finals or an internship. Boy, was I right! Our first shower is a little over 2 weeks away and I still haven’t done much more than what I did on that first day of registering. My FMIL had already gotten a couple calls about where we were registered BEFORE the shower invites even went out. Yikes!
The truth is, registries sort of intimidate me because I don’t really know what we’ll need or will really use.
