Because our venue package includes a cake in the deal, we haven’t done the traditional shopping around for a bakery. In fact, we haven’t done a whole lot of thinking about cake, period. The Dude is more of a cookie person, and I’m honestly just not that into sweets. (I know, it’s practically sacrilegious!)
I kinda thought we’d go the safe, somewhat boring route: three-tier round white cake with some coordinating flowers plopped on top. Our baker/florist/venue owner showed us some of her work, and most of the “basic” cakes had these little dots on each tier.
It’s a lovely cake (and I like the fact that it appears to be buttercream icing, and not fondant), but I really don’t have strong feelings about it. Cakes are expensive, so why should we spend so much money on something that I feel pretty blah about?
I’m definitely a huge fan of the assorted smaller cakes, like several bees before me have served at their weddings, or at least considered. Mrs. Avocado’s delectable spread comes immediately to mind.
While I do love the idea of the cake buffet, it seems like an awful lot of choices to make. (Not to mention, so many cake stands to purchase!)
I’m also really into the idea of alternative desserts, like Miss Joey’s cream puffs (yum!). For instance, we could do a whole English garden-themed dessert buffet. Scones, “biscuits”, tarts, a lemon pound cake, some fresh berries.
I love the idea, but it’s a little too theme-y for my taste, and probably difficult to execute. Just when I had given up hope of finding an inspiring idea for our reception dessert, I stumbled upon the cake photo to end all cake photos.
I want this cake! Oh, ribbon cake: to look at you is to love you.
I have no idea if our baker is going to be game for creating those lovely buttercream swooshies, but I am holding out hope! I’d probably have it made as a single or double tier, depending on what the baker thinks she can pull off.
As for the filling, the Dude had initially requested something simple—either chocolate or vanilla. He’s not into coffee-flavor desserts like I am, and he hates the mixture of fruit + chocolate. However, I introduced him to Harry and David’s chocolate-covered dried blueberries, and he freaked out over them! I asked him how he felt about a chocolate cake with blueberries, and he was all for it. So, the cake of my dreams is the buttercream ribbon confection filled with chocolate blueberry cake. I’ll keep you posted on whether my venue can make it a reality.
What is your dream cake?
