Mmmmmnummynummynummynummy.
Let me just tell you that it is a little amazing what a nice letterpressed business card does for your mood. If you’re having a stinky day, just a quick swipe of your finger over your name in letterpress, and the endorphins are magically released!
Both Mrs. Bee and Mr. Peng convinced me to go with the normal format cards. It was a tough choice! I really liked the smaller format cards, but Mr. Peng said that he wouldn’t know how to staple that thing into his Rolodex. Apparently Mr. Peng still lives in the 1970s, which is very… retro.
So, what does being the Editor in Chief of Weddingbee entail? My day is a flurry of interestingness. Sitting on my couch, occasionally shifting my butt cheeks as to not incur bedsores… it’s all very fascinating. So, I thought I’d share a little day in the life of Mrs. Penguin!
The beginning of Weddingbee’s day actually starts the night before.
6PM - I import any blog entries that have come in from the bees since the last post of the day went live. I am subscribed to all 130+ bees, and my Google Reader is meticulously organized (or I’d go insane!).
6PM-11PM - Ideally, this is when I edit the first half of the day for Weddingbee, and this is dependent on whether or not bees have written posts! Because I’m on the West Coast, and the ’bee operates on East Coast time, I’m not awake for the first 3 posts or so of the day. Mr. Peng and I typically eat dinner while I’m chatting with Mrs. Bee, Mr. Bee, and/or BIL Bee about Weddingbee logistics, brainstorming new ideas, testing out new features, etc. We all find it hard to get “down and dirty” Weddingbee work done during the day, as we all have various other forms of work going on in addition to Weddingbee during normal business hours. My video editing job is very flexible, and often you’ll find me on 2 computers (my PC for Weddingbee, and a Mac for video editing) during the day!
Mr. Peng is straining to hear Sportscenter while I’ve got Miss D’orsay (+ box of Franzia) on BeeTV blaring
11PM - Mr. Peng wakes up early for work, so we hit the sack and snuggle!
6:30AM - I drive Mr. Peng to work. UGHHHH early. He recently moved to a clinic in Berkeley, so he only works a couple miles away now, which is really great!
7AM-8:30AM - This is my real “me” time. I make coffee, read my emails, but don’t respond to anything business related unless it’s urgent. If I’m feeling feisty, I’ll do a little Wii Fit (OK, I only did this like, twice, in the last few months). I’ve really gotten into the habit of spending an hour or so in the morning just slowly ramping up for the day. I find that I’m much more pleasant if I don’t hit the ground running with business. Because I don’t go through the ritual most working people go through of showering and getting dressed and driving to work in the morning with my cup o’ Starbucks, this is my “commute” time.
8:30AM - I turn my “business” Gchat on (Mrs. Bee and I only communicate via Gchat! I once texted her a message saying I had to run an errand, and she texted back, “Who is this?”
) and spend about an hour answering emails from the bees. By now it’s 11:30 EST, so a lot of stuff has already been going on!
8:30-9:30AM - It usually takes a solid hour to sort through emails and PMs and respond to everyone that has bid’ness with me. If we have new bees that week, I spend a lot of time getting them acquainted with Weddingbee. It is very crazy your first week of being a bee! You’re bombarded suddenly with tens (hundreds in a week!) of new email alerts from comments, and it’s all craziness! I have the TV on all day but this is the only time I really care about it. Regis and Kelly is on, and in my mind I’m secretly BFFs with Kelly. And as a good BFF, I have to watch her show every day.
I was a good girl so I got some whipped cream on my coffee
9:30AM-12PM - I schedule as much of the rest of the day as I can. The bees blog at their leisure, so if there aren’t enough posts to fill up the day, Bee and I try to write posts. I keep a list of blog ideas, and try to write a personal blog or two a week for Weddingbee, in addition to the all the announcements and features that we do. (Day in the Life… check!)
12PM - I have lunch with Mr. Peng. Sometimes we go to the park next to his office, and sometimes he comes home, depending on how many patients he has that day. This is our real “meal” of the day, where we get to chit chat (since at dinner, I’m working on Weddingbee!). If my parents haven’t stolen Billie Jean, she comes too!
1-3:30PM - I schedule the last few posts of the day, and make sure everything goes live when it’s supposed to. Even though this is the time when the most stuff is going on on Weddingbee, it’s my calmest part of the day, work-wise. This is when I have my celebratory soda. Mmm. Coca Cola.
4-6PM - I pick Mr. Peng up from work and cook dinner, and we hang out. If I have any video editing work, I get the meat of that work done in the 2nd half of the day.
6PM - The next day begins!!!
Being a blog editor is a funny job; it’s flexible and at the same time, it’s not! I bring my computer everywhere, including recently on our anniversary trip to Napa, because we post 7 days a week, and Weddingbee never sleeps! But, it’s one of the best jobs ever! I love working closely to so many women (even though I sit here by myself all day!).
Thank you Mrs. Bee and Mrs. Bird of Paradise for the gorgeous cards! I rove them rong time!
Do you have a wacky work schedule?
