Finding My Bridal Glow, Part 2

July 1st, 2009 @ 11:10 am by Mrs. Peep Toe

I left you with my six month POA. Since so many of you liked the idea of creating your own POA, I’ve sprinkled my best lessons learned throughout this post.

Source

Come January I was ready to go with my POA. And how could I fail? I only had to go to the gym twice a week. This turned out to be super simple for me. I found two classes that I adored—one was Total Tone and the other was Core Fit (which used the famous Bosu Ball).

Even though the classes were at 6 AM, by starting off my flab to fab plan easy, I was able to put 110% into each workout. And not drinking during the week, super easy. I drink mostly water with dinner, but when I needed something different, flavored carbonated water usually did the trick.

Lesson learned #1: Be Realistic.

By February, I was feeling confident in myself and added one day to my workouts. This resulted in two days a week of class and one day of cardio machines and weights. I was feeling good. I hadn’t lost any additional weight but I started feeling fitter (which isn’t really a word, but whatever, that’s how I felt!). And more importantly, my clothes were starting to feel a little looser.

At the end of February, I was feeling really good about myself. The guy at the gym knew me by name and started to comment on how consistent I was! In those first two months, I didn’t miss one scheduled workout.

Lesson Learned #2: Find a gym that you like. It’s the only way you will ever go!!

This was right around the time that my brother and sister-in-law came to visit. I knew that my brother had lost a bunch of weight recently, but I was blown away by my SIL. She had lost 30 pounds since I had last seen her at our engagement party in August.

Here we are at dinner. Can’t you tell that she already has her glow on?

(Brother Peep, SIL Peep and me—sorry for the boob shot)

Her trick? No trick really, just Weight Watchers. After hearing her talk all weekend about how easy WW was, I was on board. I signed up for a three month subscription to WW Online. With 90 days before the wedding, this was exactly what I needed! If she could do this with two kids at home, I could do it, too!

My first week on WW was super duper successful. Not because I lost a ton of weight, but because I realized what I was eating. Every day for a week, I tracked EVERY little thing. I wasn’t eating horribly, but I found that if I swapped a few things here and there, I had a much healthier diet.

Example #1: Swap couscous or quinoa for lentils (the microwavable kind at Trader Joes)

Example #2: Stop eating toast (with jelly/butter/or peanut butter) for breakfast. And swap regular flake or Cheerios type cereal in the morning for Fiber Rich Cheerios (again, found at Trader Joes)

Lesson Learned #3: It’s all about the fiber!

As for the March workouts, going to the gym four days a week was tough. For the first time, I missed a workout.

Then one Saturday I had another gym breakthrough: Only go to the gym for as long as it’s fun (or, I shuold say, bearable).

Lesson Learned #4: If you don’t want to do it, do something else. The gym has to be your friend, not your enemy!!

Since my fourth day a week workout was turning into a Saturday workout, I realized that I only needed to stay for 20 to 30 minutes. Usually, I focused on weight training and toning on these days—lots of back, stomach and arm exercises. Since I am no expert on weight training, I won’t go into specifics, but I will say that taking time to tone these areas TOTALLY paid off!

At the end of March I hit a milestone: My second dress fitting! At this point, I was going to the gym consistently three days a week, and while I was no longer tracking what I was eating, I was paying attention to what I ate.

Results: I had lost 5 pounds and an inch at my waist!! Awesome.

But this was at the same time that I hit a bump in the road. Mr. Peep got a new job which allowed us to carpool together to work, which was awesome for us, but not for my POA. This put an end to my 6 AM workouts and my two very favorite classes ever.

Determined not to be derailed, I searched out evening classes, which I found and liked, but by no means did I love them.

Lesson Learned #5: If you can, find a gym with a TV on each machine. Watching a guilty pleasure while working out significantly helped.

Overall, April was a rocky month for my POA, but the change in my eating habits and the groundwork for my workouts allowed me to basically stay on track. By May, I had three very solid workouts a week, mixing classes and cardio/weight training on my own. I stuck to things I really liked to do.

Since May was the month of my wedding, my POA and search for my bridal glow changed completely, so I’ll wait to tell you about that next time. And just in case you think that every day was a good day:

Lesson Learned #6: When I really, really didn’t want to be at the gym I closed my eyes and envisioned my dress. Try it, it works!!

What is one lesson you’ve learned that you’ve found motivational when it comes to finding your own bridal glow?

Wow, you’re right: lesson learned #6 is a good one. Congrats, Peep! I think it’s awesome you were able to motivate yourself so effectively, and can’t wait to hear the next installment of your POA. :-)

my favorite is your last tip - picture the dress. I have my dress hanging in my room to look at when I do weights ;) Work it!

Great tips Mrs. Peep! You are right about the gym; make sure you like it and there are TVs on each machine. I should make a POA, it might help me get moving.

I did lesson #6 last night - it’s actually more of a sport psychology thing! You envision yourself succeeding at the thing you want to do.
I had a 6 mile run last night, kenyan outback style. This means you run the first 3 miles an easy pace, and the second 3 miles you have to shave off 3-5 minutes. I went out in 34:20, and back in 30:30! But boy was back a lot harder than the out. I envisioned myself running hard on a segment of the trail where I know I’m almost done, and it totally worked for my motivation!
btw, have you seen oh she glows?

Ooh I need to get some fiber rich cheerios! When I did not want to go to the gym, or was slacking on my cardio, I would picture myself looking at my pro wedding pics and imagining me hating all the pics because I had not reached my weight/fitness goals. That got me moving my butt for sure.

The last tip is a great motivation. Having the dress in sight while exercising is a great way to get to where you want to be. Also the simple tip of watching what you eat is great! I find when i dont’ deprive myself and just watch my portions it works better than not eating anything yummy at all. Thanks for the post!

I totally agree with #6! it’s also important not to get discouraged just because you have one off week (or month, even!). You can’t be all or nothing about staying fit!

What great tips Mrs. Peep! It’s too late for me to get my Bridal Glow on but these are still relevant tips for getting the Newlywed Glow. =)

One thing that I found always worked for me, was listening to Audio Books at the gym. Most Libraries have a selection of Audio Books, so it’s cost effective and a great way to explore novels or authors you wouldn’t normally read.

Seriously got a good dose this morning. Loss two 1/2 inches off my waist, one inch off my arms & two inches off my thighs in two weeks. I hadnt worked out like usual (5 times a week) since finals & managed to gain five pounds in two months - which placed me further away from my goal. Although I didnt lose any weight, this mornings measuring surely got me excited & motivated. Not to mention, I should be going in for my second fitting in about two weeks - so I am looking forward to that :)

You are so inspirational! And thanks for the tips! #6 is something I do regularly too, The last 5-10 minutes of spin class I think about that dress and that my honeymoon includes being in a bathing suit most of the time! :)

I know quinoa is great for you (& I love to eat it!), but why do lentils need to be swapped out? I always thought they were good for you, so if you could impart some WW wisdom for me, I am curious! :)

These are all great tips…finding a gym you love being the key one, I think. I recently tried to go to another location of my gym’s chain because it was near work, and it was kind of gross…..made me want to leave and I actually did cut my workout time in half there. So now I will ONLY go to the location near my house, it’s new, clean, has state-of-the-art equipment and more importantly I feel comfortable there, never in a hurry to leave!

@Mrs. Quiche: I love quinoa much better than lentils, but lentils have more fiber in them, so in WW terms, they are better for you!??

Lentils are always chock full of protein and iron! Eat your lentils!

I meant *also* full of protein and iron. Whoops.

#5 is my favorite, lesson, too. I was so consistent at my gym before the wedding because I could watch “The Real Housewives” while working out and not feel like I was wasting time!

Quinoa is a complete protein, a source of fiber (7g/serving), magnesium, phorphorous, iron, B vitamins, zinc, vitamin E… I think it’s unwise to advocate “swapping out” such a healthy food. Most people have plenty of other calorie/fat-dense foods (with little nutritional value) in their diets to cut back on. It’s a superfood for veg*ns and/or the health-conscious.
