I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!

Flowers and Flea Markets

July 1st, 2009 @ 4:48 pm by Mrs. Mouse

This past weekend, the Dude and I went to our first meeting with our florist, Abby. She’s the in-house florist for our venue, which I love because that means she is an expert at making Barr Mansion look beautiful. The meeting went really well—I felt like she understood my vision right away. All I had to do was utter a few key phrases: “vintage”, “English garden”, and “cabbage rose”, and she was on the same page as me. She was totally realistic about the types of flowers that will and won’t be available in September. (Sadly, peonies, buttercups, and anemones are out.) However, she assured me that garden or cabbage roses would be a wonderful substitute, really giving the feel that we’re going for.

Flowers I can’t have

We decided on a combo of pale pale pink and cream garden roses and spray roses, with green and pink hydrangea and dusty miller filling out the bouquets. Not only will the dusty miller match the Dude’s gray suit, but it will also provide a much-needed contrast to the girly pastels making up the rest of the bouquet. The hydrangea will contribute a lush, organic element. (The Dude liked the hydrangea!) The Dude also really liked the idea of fresh herbs, so we will be incorporating rosemary into the corsages, boutonnieres, and place settings. It’ll look and smell awesome.

You likey the cabbage rose?

Abby also talked to us about the candles and other decor that we’ll have at the reception site. I told her about the soy candles that I’m DIYing, and she gave me some estimates of how many we might need for the ballroom where our reception will be. She liked the idea of putting votives into different-sized mason jars, and she also suggested we look for vases in varying sizes and heights to use for the floral centerpieces. We jumped all over that idea! In fact, the Dude and I couldn’t wait to get started on this project, so we hit up a flea market just outside of Austin right after our meeting with Abby. We ended up buying 23 vases and jars for around $16! We still have a ways to go (3 candle jars and 3 vases per table, at least 13 tables), but check out the progress we’ve made:

These need a good washin’

Throughout the meeting, Abby guided the Dude and me through all of the options for flowers during the ceremony and reception, but she didn’t pressure us to order things we didn’t need. Our estimate was waiting for us in my Gmail inbox when we got home, and—surprise, surprise—it was right around the budget we had come up with independently! This was the case even though we didn’t discuss pricing at the meeting.

Abby was great to work with, and she seemed happy that we requested things that were a tad offbeat and that we trusted her judgment on a lot of things. I feel totally comfortable leaving the vision in her hands.

This is probably the most excited and inspired I’ve been at any point in the planning process. It was great to finally get the Dude in on something, too. I think he enjoyed the meeting about 40% as much as I did, which is saying a lot! When we were leaving, he told me, “You’re really good at this stuff.” Finally, he’s paying attention.

Did you bring your FI to your floral meetings? Did he enjoy himself?

Too funny that you’re asking that question! We have our final meeting with our florist in a few weeks, and I asked Mr. Bruschetta to come along. At first, he whined a bit, but ultimately agreed. :-)

I have that bouquet as inspiration thinking it was peonies! Love the cabbage rose! We are going to the florist tonight so I will let you know how the Mr. does… haha.

Fantastic! We supplied all the vessels for our flowers and all the candlesticks. Mr. P’s mom is an antiques dealer and she had several that we could use. The remainder I found at a junk store up the street from us!

I love the collected quality of your “stuff”!!!

I brought my FI to our florist’s meeting and he kind of just sat there, admitting that he didn’t know much about flowers but trusted my taste. It was hard for him to visualize what we were talking about, but when the wedding rolled around he loved the flowers! (P.S. We used garden roses in peach and cream as well as green, blue and white/cream hydrangeas!!)

I felt the same way as you after the meeting with our florist. I suddenly felt really excited and had all sorts of ideas floating through my head! The meeting with the florist was the first meeting that the Mr. came along on. He didn’t have much to say and I don’t think he really knew what was going on. He did much better when it came time to talk cake!

I went to the florist alone… already he followed me for every other vendor… flowers were just my thing.

By the way I love cabbage roses. Very Peony like.

I printed out the decor/floral invoice and slid it across the coffee table in front of Mr Pig. He held it, and continued to watch tennis. :D

What great finds you found at the flea market!!! I love the aesthetic you’re going for.. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

Thank you for this Cabbage Rose inspiration! I love peonies and was wishing I could have them for my Fall wedding. Now I can! I can’t believe how similar they are :)

For the first florist we met, he sat through it all (he didn’t like it much). During the meeting with the second florist, he came with me but made a mad dash to play basketball with her kids.

I never got to meet our florist, and NO I wouldn’t have brought Mr. K. He had absolutely zero input on anything besides food, alcohol, and music! I ADORE those cabbage roses! Are cabbage roses and garden roses the same thing? Similar?
