Getting Dressed for a Shower?

July 2nd, 2009 @ 11:04 am by Mrs. Cloud

I am one lucky gal. not only am I having one bridal shower, but THREE are being thrown in my honor this summer! I have to say I do love a party, especially one with yummy food and fabulous friends, and I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but I was (and still am) very nervous about the whole situation. The thing is, I’m not super comfortable opening presents in front of people. I’m always nervous I don’t look happy enough with the gift or that people think I really am ungrateful! It’s just me being self conscious, especially since I have never been told that is how I come off, but still, I’m nervous.

What better way to kill the nerves then by wearing a fabulous outfit!? So, a few weekends ago when my mom was in town for a whirlwind wedding weekend, we set out to find a few great selections.

For the first shower being thrown Mama Cloud’s best friend here in Virginia near where I grew up, Anthropologie came through with a perfect choice!

I am in L-O-V-E with this dress! First of all, the colors of the shower will be black and white with splashes of pink, so I definitely won’t clash with the decorations, and it is SO comfortable. It doesn’t look like it in the picture, but it is actually a jersey material, so it’s forgiving and casual without being too sloppy or too dressy for an afternoon shower.

Next up, a shower thrown by Mama C herself in Boston where she now lives. She’s throwing a little luncheon/shower for family and friends in that area with a pink and green theme (my favorite colors, as well as the colors of my current kitchen).

I found this at a Ralph Lauren Outlet Store. Ralph Lauren, how I love thee… and it was marked down from $159.00 to a mere $49.99! SCORE! Sorry for the small picture; it is no longer available for sale and my dress is out being pressed. Mine is also a gorgeous green color, not black.

Last but not least, the coveted J.Crew Pique V-neck Ruffle Dress in navy. I will be rockin’ this bad boy at a shower thrown by my FMIL in upstate New York, Mr. Cloud’s hometown.

This has been all over the blog world since it came out, as well as being sold out in my size for quite a while. Well, I had a preferred customer 25% off card (not that my J.Crew card sees a lot of action or anything) so how could I say no? So I waltzed in to my local store and ordered from the red phone (hello, free shipping!! Yeah, I’m cheap). It was said to be back ordered until the end of July, but it arrived today and fits like a dream!

Since I am on such a tight budget these days, spending this kind of money might seem silly, but I like to think I can get some repeat wears out of them. Both the J.Crew and Anthro dresses will pack very nicely so they will be going on the honeymoon, and the RL dress is so cute I just need a friend with a summer wedding and I’ll be set!

What are you wearing to your shower(s)? Is anyone else as nervous as I am to open presents!?!

I wore a white dress because I’m using this ‘bride’ excuse as much as possible. But I love all the dresses you posted! We have very similar taste!

Mine was a surprise, so I didn’t have to time to prep and plan like you do! But I was definitely nervous about opening gifts in front of people. I love getting presents, but it’s hard opening them all and coming up with the appropriately gracious responses, while being careful not to take too long and bore the other guests!

I LOVE that first dress…..but it’s already sold out :( So sad! I may have to see if anyone’s selling it on ebay!

Yes! I’ve never been very good at being the center of attention. At my best friend’s wedding, I almost backed out of the MOH speech because I was afraid of everyone staring at me! Eeep, guess I’d better get over that fear quickly.

A great dress and some great undergarments will make anyone feel like a new, confident woman!

I love the Anthro dress! Very very cute.

Opening presents was bad for me during my bridal shower! My friend gifted me with one of those ‘position’ books, and I had an anxiety attack when they handed it to my FMIL. THE HORROR~!

I love the dresses you posted…and I TOTALLY understand, I gave a LOT of thought to all of the shower dresses that I bought. I opted not for the “white” dresses, more for practicality, b/c I know I will want to wear some of the dresses to other peoples weddings in the future to get the most bang from my buck. Love the JCrew one especially, looks so comfy and you can get away with that as an “every day” dress and good for honeymoon!

I ADORE the Anthropology dress! It’s the perfect statement for the shower. I love the socialite feel of the second dress and the relaxed yet refined vibe of the third.
Basically, you have great taste!

I have the JCrew dress and I absolutely love it!! Perfectly casual with flip flops or dressy with heels. It definitely packs well and you’ll get tons of wears with it. I love all your dress choices! :)

I am comforted to know see that you didn’t pick white dresses for your showers. For some crazy reason, I always thought that the bride had to wear “white”! Now, I can shop for cute dresses without a worry. I really like the J. Crew dress. Have fun at all your showers.

I *love* t he J Crew dress. Gosh, I hadn’t thought to be stressed about opening gifts, but now that I think about it… Unfortunately my face tells all, so there will certainly be trouble if I don’t like one of my gifts. I think the last time I opened presents in front of people was probably at a birthday party when I was like 10 years old.

I hate opening presents in front of people too! I feel like I have to be overly excited or risk upsetting them…how silly! :)

Love the dresses!! Aren’t showers the BEST excuse for buying them?!

Soooo totally weird question.
What is this red phone everyone is talking about? (I’ve never been into a J Crew store, only drooled over the website)
