Mrs. Cloud's Picture
Mrs. Cloud, Richmond Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Rep Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Customer Service Manager/DJ Engagement Date: February 14, 2008 Wedding Date: November 2009 Venue: Cathedral of the Sacred Heart & The Jefferson Hotel About Me: Mr. Cloud and I are Yankees planning a Southern wedding to show our families from Boston and New York our fabulous city. We are complete opposites, resulting in a wedding to include bridesmaids in pearls and groomsmen in Adidas shell toes. I’m a sorority girl at heart with strong addictions to my blackberry, cherry Chapstick, Coach purses, the Boston Red Sox and our fur baby, Bella. I can’t wait to the throw the party of our lives and of course, marry my best friend!
About Mrs. Cloud

So, I have been blabbering on and on about the wedding, and only briefly mentioned the boy who made it all possible, my fiancé, Mr. Cloud! By the time we get married we will have been together for just over five years and have been engaged for close to two. And let me tell you, three years in, when he finally got down on one knee, I was so ready, but so surprised!

Let me back up a bit. I met Mr. Cloud when I was in college. Like any good sorority girl with commitment issues, I was busy having a good time with my friends. It was my third year, and I was living with another sorority sister (who is now BM N) and a friend of ours from our brother fraternity (ironically he is now best man L… see where this story is going?). One night while we were all having a fabulous time at the classiest toga part you could ever imagine (I swear, it really was a toga party, you can’t even make this stuff up), best man L yells over to me and BM N if we would mind if his best friend from home came to visit and stay with us a while. Well, we had seen pictures, and we knew he was cute so we obviously had no objections. The next day, Mr. Cloud was at my doorstep and I was left to entertain him all evening until best man L got home from work. We talked all night and his three day trip turned into a week, followed by many miles traveled back and forth, and ultimately a big move to the South to live here for good!

Our first picture together, we look so young!
(Yeah I don’t know why it’s black and white either..)

Fast forward to 2008, and I was getting antsy.

We had moved in together, we had talked about getting married, we knew we would be together forever, but where was the freakin’ ring already!? I knew there was one, or the potential to be one, because my great grandmother had left me a diamond to use if I wanted it, and I knew Mr. Cloud knew that it existed too (follow that? I was going nuts!). But Christmas had come and gone, and so had New Year’s, and Mr. C had flat out said it wasn’t happening on a holiday, and I just needed to chill. So I woke up on Valentines Day, took a shower, and talked myself down. I literally stood there and talked myself out of expecting anything. I was NOT going to be upset if our nice dinner was just a nice dinner and not a monumental occasion. I was okay with that. I didn’t really want him to ask me at dinner, anyway. It just wasn’t us, as we are pretty laid back and I just couldn’t see it happening.

So I was hanging out on the couch in my sweats, watching Real World/Road Rules Challenge, when Mr. C came home for lunch. That was normal, so I just kept on watching. But he kept bugging me, trying to get my attention and finally turned the TV off. Then I realized our fur baby Bella wasn’t crawling all over the couch with us like usual, and then I FINALLY realized that Mr. C was not on the couch with me, either. In fact, he was on the floor… ON ONE KNEE WITH A SMALL BOX IN HIS HAND!! Yeah, this was way more our style then a fancy dinner! He was talking, I was crying, and of course I said yes. He still says I never answered, but that I just screamed, which could definitely be true :).

I smiled so hard for the rest of the day that my face hurt. I called everyone possible to tell them, but Mr. Cloud still had to go finish his day at work (apparently he planned on that fancy dinner being the best time, but also realized it wouldn’t work for us and ran straight home from lunch to ask as soon as possible). We never did make it to the restaurant. Instead, I cooked dinner and went to buy bridal magazines, of course!

I have told this story a million times. I’m always a little offended when people turn up their noses at the way he asked. But then I realize they must not know us well, because if they did, they would realize it was the perfect proposal… for us!

Did you have a perfect, non-traditional proposal?

People turn up their noses?! HA! Thats absurd, that proposal was perfect - it was the two of you!!

And I love that he was too excited to even wait, how cute. The ring is gorgeous! We need a closeup ;)

Miss cloud– my proposal was very similar! I agree a proposal should reflect who you are as a couple rather than conforming to some standard of what a “perfect” proposal should look like. Cute story!

That is so adorable! Ours was like this too–my FI always said that he wanted it to be a moment just between us, not between us and a bunch of strangers in a restaurant. :) …Although those are cute proposals too, of course! You have plenty of time to tell anyone and everyone–I think it’s great that the actual proposal was just between the two of you.

oh - and my proposal was perfect and non-traditional (in the traditional sense of speaking ;) ) No dinner, no holiday, no roses - that just not us. We went back to the place where we had our first kiss. It was dark, and he got on one knee and asked. I screamed, he had to remind me to say yes (after the ring was on my finger) and it was perfect

Miss Cloud - that picture of you with the ring is hysterical! Much like mine just minutes after he proposed. Yeah, except in mine I look like my eyes might bug out of my head, ha!

Very cute! Mine was only fairly traditional. I was asked on top of a ski run in Colorado. We were dressed in full-on ski gear, helmets and all. It was perfect for us!

I think it is a cute story. My proposal was on a Wednesday night after dinner on our way to pick up end tables for our new townhouse. I never saw it coming!

Whoa, you have quite the yummy Mr Cloud there. That pic of you guys when you were younger looks like he walked straight off the set of Beverly Hills 90210, or something.

Ring close-up please! It looks beautiful. And ignore the idiots who “turn up their noses” at yor proposal - who does that?? IDIOTS.

Aww, you and Mr. Cloud are so adorable! Our relationship follows about the same time line as yours, we met in my junior year of college and got married almost 5 years later!

I think it’s a FANTASTIC story… I continuously look at our wedding plans and think ‘what if people think we’re tacky or cheesy’… well if they do then they don’t know US and that’s all that matters, is US… CONGRATS! :-)

What a great story–and I love your ring! My fiance also proposed in an unconventional way … in the middle of watching Lord of the Rings and eating fondue on New Year’s Eve! :)

Great Story! My proposal consisted of my FI flopping down on our Vegas hotel bed and opening the ring box. But it was a total surprise and he proposed on “our” b-day, because we share the same day. So now it is even extra special.

I love hearing all the proposal stories! I think what’s considered perfect depends completely on the couple :) and ring shots are coming soon!

We got engaged at our house too, at the top of our stairs! My FI was in his work outfit (a suit & tie), and I was in my workout clothes! It fit us perfectly too!

Congrats! I love your story!

Aw, that’s so sweet!
I get what you mean about the non-over-the-top proposals. People give me the “that’s it?” look when I tell our story.
I don’t care. It was very us.

Very cute! I love it :) I think it’s so sweet when guys just can’t wait…that really shows how excited they are! FI said he had to wait until the weekend since we live an hour or so away from the location he wanted to ask me. He searched Google Earth to find the location we went to on our first date, overlooking town, where we had our first kiss. There were deer, rabbits, rainbows. It was incredible! My “yes” was more of a squeak since I was crying already. HAHA

You two are very cute (You remind me of someone famous, but I’m not sure who)! The most important thing is the fact that you got engaged and not HOW you got engaged.

He did ask me at a nice dinner, but the propsal itself wasn’t traditional. He didn’t get down on one knee or make a speech about us or how much he loves me. I was distracted, he was asking me when I was going to go see my mother and if I was going to tell her about our plans to move from Louisiana to Colorado and then asked if I was also going to tell her about “this”. When I looked to see what “this” was, there was an open ring box sitting between us. He quietly asked me to marry him, I said yes, we kissed. He claims I got teary - I claim I did not. His proposal was perfect because it was “us” - if he’d done something over-the-top, it would have seemed fake because he’s a practical guy and I love that about him… because I’m not the most practical gal.
I think it’s more important that the proposal fits the couple than it be “impressive” to other people.

Oh, and although our proposal was in a restaurant, it was in a private alcove in a restaurant with maybe two other tables occupied.

Your ring looks gorgeous! I totally know what you went through because I had a long wait for my ring too! And our proposal while non-traditional and not what I was expecting was perfect! If you’d like, you can read about our story by visiting the below links:

If people turn up their noses, they are simply envious of a TRUE romantic story. We had a very similar story involving our kitty cat and me just getting out of the shower standing in the bathroom with only my towel on! That was also perfect for us. Nothing fancy or over the top. Just simple. Great story! You two make a gorgeous couple!

Heh, that is a lot like our proposal story. He woke me up at 10 on a Saturday morning (we were in college at the time… that’s EARLY ;)) saying that he had gone out to get my late Valentine’s present and wanted to give it to me. I had told him to not get me any chocolate or flowers before VDay but wait until after for the sales… we’re both cheap like that.
So after some grouchy complaining from me, I put on sweatpants and go down to meet him, unwashed, unbrushed, no makeup, looking and feeling gross. He gives me the chocolate and I’m all excited, trying to pick which one I want to eat, looking over the little chart. I finally picked one, he popped it in my mouth and as I am sitting there trying to savor it, he says “Well, I couldn’t find any flowers so I got you this instead” and puts a ring on my finger. I was so shocked. I just stared at my hand for about a minute in total silence, mouth full of chocolate, before I finally looked up and he said “Will you marry me?” Then I couldn’t actually say yes because my mouth was still FULL OF CHOCOLATE, so I tackle-hugged him and bopped him on the nose to say yes.

I also had a fairly untraditional proposal. The Mister and I were in a long-distance relationship and spent most of our time on the phone with one another. We hadn’t been together very long, so we hadn’t really seriousaly talked about getting married. We’d been best friends for 12 years, and in that time had occasionally joked about the idea—-it just hadn’t been seriously discussed. During one of our late night conversations, it finally came up and apparently we both had discussed the concept with close friends of ours. So that was it—he said he knew he wanteed to marry me, and I said I knew too. Then he said, so, let’s get married and I said ok. That’s it. Once we finally got a ring, he did it the right way in a romantic place and on bended knee…but the original was totally untraditional.

People sometimes make faces when I say I was proposed to at the zoo, but it was perfect! Then again, I did get married in a barn afterall hahaha.

we have a very similar story, except that mr. cavalier turned off american idol and got down on one knee on st. patrick’s day. it was perfect for us- my requirements were that it be in private and that i not know it was coming, and me in my sweatpants with my ring finger deep inside a bag of potato chips absolutely fit the bill :-) our engagement and wedding are all out there for everyone else to enjoy- this was our private moment, and im so happy we had it for ourselves.

My baby and I were having dinner one night, at our favorite steakhouse. It was really nothing special, we were talking about my bad day at work. When out of nowhere, he tells me that there’s no way he can live without me. So I say “I know, baby! I feel the same way!” Then he says “So I think we need to spend the rest of our lives together. I don’t have a ring. All I have is myself. But I’ll give that to you completely.” It was the most romantic thing ever! He hadn’t even bought a ring. He just knew in that moment. We’ve been together for 3 years, and it will be 4 when we get married. It was so perfect for us.

I would definitely call our proposal untraditional. =) Was it what I’d always dreamed of? Or what my fiance had always dreamed of? No. BUT. It was us, and it was perfect because it’s the moment we got officially engaged.

Sometimes I think there are more “untraditional”than the regular (ha-ha) kind.
Ours was like that - at the end of our acation after NUMEROUS dinners, romantic walks on the beach, etc - while I’m reading a magazine when we’re both in the tub @ the B&B and he’s busting my chops and making me upset. But that’s one of my favorite places to be so - yeah, perfect for us! (Even if we were naked at the time.)
