I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. Let’s Get Going!

July 6th, 2009 @ 5:15 pm by Mrs. Mouse

With six months to go until the wedding, it was time to start planning our honeymoon! We had already decided we wanted to go to Greece. The Dude’s never been to Europe before, so he was game for almost anything. I liked the idea of having at least a couple days to relax on the beach, and he couldn’t wait to see some ancient ruins. Island hopping in Greece seemed like the best of both worlds. Sure, plane tickets would be expensive, but the Dude’s been diligently saving ever since we got engaged.

Imagine our surprise when my mom generously offered us her airline miles on British Airways!

We jumped at the offer, but soon our plans began to morph—instead of flying directly into Athens, we’d take a flight into London, then hop on the Chunnel to Paris, and stay a few nights in that magical city before training it all the way into Greece.

The Dude was pumped about Paris, and even though I’ve been there once before, I started to get excited about seeing the City of Lights with my guy. I went ahead and booked two one-way tickets: one from Dallas (yep, we’ll have to drive from Austin to Dallas the day after our wedding) to London and another from Athens to Dallas. We had to spend more points this way, but luckily my mom had plenty of points to share with us. If you decide to use your accumulated air miles to book your honeymoon, I would suggest booking as early as possible. We got lucky and didn’t encounter too many blackouts, but we did have to play around with our dates a bit.

With our flight booked, we were planning on relaxing on the honeymoon plans for awhile, but then we heard that Orbitz was having a crazy sale on hotels. We had to check it out. We logged onto Orbitz and plugged in the dates that we would be in Paris. (Note: if you’re booking an international honeymoon, make sure you check your flight itinerary before booking a hotel. We almost booked our Paris hotel for the wrong nights due to a mix-up on what day it would be when we arrived in London!) We scrolled through the list, looking for hotels that met our criteria: at least 3 to 4 stars, not an international chain, close to the city center, modern and romantic decor. For each hotel we looked at on Orbitz, we made sure to check the hotel’s website as well to see if the Orbitz price was actually better. In most cases, the Orbitz price won out—but it’s always a good idea to make sure, since sometimes hotels will offer specials if you book directly through them.

We ended up lucking out: we booked the Hotel Ares Eiffel, a four-star modern boutique hotel that’s a ten-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower! We devoured the virtual tours on their website: beautiful rooms and suites decorated in extravagant-yet-simple modern style, funky lounge area, sparkling pictures of the city at night. Uh, sold! Best of all: the price. For around $900 U.S., we got a double for three nights. It’s definitely a splurge for us, but this’ll be the first place we stay on our honeymoon. We plan on going a bit cheaper while we’re in Greece.

This is the building that will be greeting us upon our arrival in Paris—I can’t wait! Here’s some more eye candy from this whimsical yet modern hotel. I can’t help but think it fits the mood of the city perfectly.

wow, your hotel is close to the eiffel tower!
FYI, you might want to look ahead into prices for the chunnel. It’s insanely expensive (unless you’re under 25). Mr. Bear Cub and I took it from London to Lille - just a little 1.5 hr trip. I was 24 at the time, and it cost me 40 pounds. Mr. BC was over 25. It cost him something like 140 pounds. It’s completely age-dependent. And insanely expensive! If you can find a deal on the chunnel in advance, do it!

Otherwise, you should buy a ryanair flight from stansted to paris (they’re usually less than a pound - crazy!)

You’ll love Paris! Go over to Rue De Claire and stroll through the marked for fruit, cheese and some wine. Then go back to the Tower and sit on the grass and eat your treats while the lights come on. Very pretty and romantic!
Rue De Claire is about 3 blocks from the tower. I think I’m spelling the street name right. It has been since college since I was there.
Never been the Greece. Can’t wait to hear about your trip!

Wow! That is an awesome hotel, especially for that price! Our biggest splurge was also a hotel. We stayed at Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy, something I REALLY wanted to do, but could only afford one night. It was totally worth it though! Probably the nicest hotel I will ever stay at in my life!

Seriously, Mouse, we have got to be wedding soulmates. We wanted to have a layover in Paris (I’ve been once and he hasn’t!), but it ended up not working out.

Your hotel in Paris looks divine! Can’t wait to read more about where you’re going in Greece and write more about where we’re going!

Aren’t parents awesome? My parent bought our flight to Rome with credit card rewards we cashed our for airline tickets. I highly recommend the Chase Travel Rewards card because there is not one restriction on flight booking. Your honeymoon sounds fabulous and your hotel is swoon worthy. Our biggest honeymoon splurge is also a swoon worth hotel Villa Carlotta in Taormina Italy. I try not to think about how much it cost.

My dad did the same thing for our honeymoon. He travels like crazy for work and has literally hundreds of thousands of miles that just sit around. He gave me his special 1K member number and phone number so we could book our flights to Australia for our honeymoon! We are so excited - we will be taking a 21 day cruisetour of Australia and New Zealand. The only downside with using miles is that if you book really early, there are limited seats reserved for frequent flier miles. We got tickets, but want to stay in Auckland the last night we are there instead of Sydney. Thus, we have to keep calling back to see if there are seats available… or ask my dad to call and see if he can work his magic.

Your hotel in Paris looks DIVINE…you must be so excited! We totally splurged on our honeymoon, and it was so worth it. Since we went to Greece as well, I can’t wait to read about your plans for the second leg of your honeymoon!

Gorgeous hotel. Our biggest splurge was our honeymoon in Greece too. We stayed at Astra Apartments in Santorini. It’s nestled right above the caldera looking straight at the volcano.

Like miss Bear Cub said you should def check out RyanAir out of Stansted (they dont fly out of Gatwick or Heathrow)…but it is a pain in the rear to get out there. We flew RyanAir from Stansted to Dublin and it was completely worth the super cheap price but we had to pay for transportation to the airport and then a hotel out there! Just fyi….

BUT you will both LOVE Greece!! So gorgeous and picturesque…a wonderful honeymoon choice!!

We are going to Australia and Fiji…but we are going to wait a while (probably almost a year!) for the “real honeymoon.” We’re taking a minimoon at our destination wedding and we are also taking a quick “engagement” trip to Europe before the wedding –it seems very indulgent! :)

Hi there! Just wanted to give you the name of a fabulous Italian restaurant near the Eiffel - I know, I know, who goes to France for Italian food? But for real, it’s absolutely fabulous, cheap, and has ridic views of the Eiffel when you sit outside. We were just there for our honeymoon last month, and stumbled upon this place our last night!

Il Sorrentino, 4, rue de Monttessuy, Paris 7th

@Miss Bear Cub: Thanks for the heads up–that is crazy pricing! We’ll try to get our Chunnel tix in advance online, if possible.

@Miss Star: We are totally wedding soulmates! We definitely need to talk about Greece at some point!

@Samantha: Thanks for the tip! The Dude will probably hate French food anyway (he’s what you call “picky”), so this might be perfect for him!

What a fantastic sounding honeymoon! I hate to fly, but I think I could suck it up for this kind of trip.

Oh, and let me just go ahead and express my jealousy about your plans to travel by train to Greece! Ms. Mouse, we’d better see pictures!! :D

Slight correction - the street stacyrp mentioned is lovely but it is called Rue Cler. It’s a pedestrian market street. If you are interested in a huge, cheap delicious salad I recommend going to Cafe du Marche on the corner of Rue Cler and Rue du Champ de Mars. They have a large outdoor terrace and are quite popular.
Also, seeing as it’s your honeymoon, I would not recommend taking ryanair. You land at Beauvais which is over an hour outside of the city and then you have to take a bus that costs over 10 euros into the city to Porte Maillot. It’s quite a hassle. Better to look into the Eurostar tix now and get something reasonable. They have fares at 77 euros round trip if you buy about 4-5 months ahead of time and you’ll be glad to leave from central London and arrive in central Paris.
