About Mrs. French Bulldog

52 Xtra Long

July 7th, 2009 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. French Bulldog

I heard this nasty rumor when we first started planning our wedding that you could rent suits at Men’s Wearhouse. I had this vision of Mr Frenchie in a charcoal gray suit and his dudes in a lighter gray. It all looked so pretty in my head. Guess what? You CANNOT rent suits from Men’s Wearhouse. It is NOT that easy. After looking around, it looked like if we were going to have all the groomsmen in matching suits, they were going to have to be purchased.

Why is it so unheard of for groomsmen to purchase their bridal party outfit? Bridesmaids don’t rent their dresses, so why should the groomsmen get off so easy?

As if finding gray suits for the groomsmen wasn’t hard enough, one of our groomsmen is a 52 extra long. Luckily for me however, my 52 XL made it his job to find a gray suit that everyone could wear. After searching high and low, and ordering a suit, only to find out 2 weeks later it only comes in navy blue, we put the great gray suit search to bed this weekend.

Thanks to my 52 XL’s persistance and Men’s Wearhouse’s Buy 1 Get 1 Free deal, 3 groomsmen and FFIL Frenchie all purchased gray suits this past weekend. PHEW!

Source

On Thursday night we were in a bit of a panic when we couldn’t find a fourth person to go in on the suit deal. Groomsman 52XL and Mr Frenchie were calling anyone who might need a suit. Luckily, FFIL Frenchie hadn’t purchased a suit in several years and was wondering what he was going to wear to the wedding. I’m so happy it all came together and that it’s one less thing I need to worry about.

Are your groomsmen purchasing their outfits rather than renting them?

BM dresses are usually under $200 while suits are usually $300+.

But at least you know you can wear that suit for many other occasions unlike the BM dress.

I’m making everyone rent because we are going with tuxes instead of suits.

I was not a fan of the tux so we did this as well. Also we learned that certain suits don’t come in flat front, and just came in pleats. But we found out that we can pay for them to be removed when the suit gets altered, perfect for the groom to get his suit to how he liked it!

We are doing suits for the guys as well, and it turns out to be cheaper for them to buy a suit, than rent a tux. Tux rentals are really expensive. When they realized this, they were all in for buying suits.

My groomsmen purchased their own sport coat. We got them at Men’s Warehouse on a buy one get one free deal.

We only have a best man and he is buying a tux. My FI is buying a tux too. The best man (his bro) happens to be getting married in November (with my FI as his best man), so it made more sense for them financially to buy their tuxes rather than rent them twice. Both men are quite tall (over 6′3″) so, they will get a nicer fit this way, too. All they have to do is switch up the ties (bowtie for our wedding, regular tie for the best man’s wedding).

We ended up doing the exact same thing you did, purchasing four suits at Men’s Wearhouse during a 2 for 1 sale. I thought about that, too, I felt so guilty for “making” the groomsmen pay for suits. They were the same price as the bridesmaids dresses, and I didn’t feel super-guilty about that! Luckily most of our groomsmen were pretty agreeable!

I still have dreams (not really bad enough to be classified nightmares, but close!) about the guys, especially my guy, in that wonderful classy, but casual sand/tan/khaki-colored suit, but thought the cost of renting a tux was bad enough (I let my girls pick their own dresses so cost wasn’t an issue) that I couldn’t ask the guys to put forth the cost. Plus, my dad has this “You wear tuxedos at a wedding.” mentality, and they’re paying. So that’s what we’re going with.

@El Capataz & @Andie: I believe each suit was about $250 + tax… about the same as my bridesmaid’s dresses.

Our groomsmen are buying their suits as well, but we found an awesome deal online and they are getting them all for under $100 each! After my guy paid over $150 to rent a khaki suit to be in one of his groomsmen’s wedding this spring, I didn’t feel bad about that at all.

You can rent tuxes from the MW Tux stores, which are under the Men’s Warehouse chain. That’s where we got our tuxes from, all Ralph Lauren so not affordable to purchase for one wedding!

Our GM will probably buy suits, as I think it will be tough to find suits to rent. Plus, every guy needs a tan suit!

My groom was dead set on a gray suit for the wedding… so we did the same thing! I contributed $100 towards each of my BM dresses (they were asked to pick a dress that they’d wear again in our wedding colors) and my groomie is doing the same for his fellas - contributing $100 each towards their suits.
The suits were $400, but we caught Men’s Warehouse during the 1/2 off sale, so each GM only had to kick in $100 of their own dough. I still felt guilty for some reason, but I’m getting over it! Haha, glad I earned my 2nd quarter bonus at work! ;)

How much is it to rent a tux? I always envisioned my fiancé wearing a tux on our wedding day. He said he would even buy his tux, but I don’t think the other groomsmen are on the same boat.
Would that look weird if he’s in a tux and they are wearing suits?
I keep getting flyers from the mens wearhouse for rentals, do they only rent out tuxs and are they expensive? Does anyone know or can suggest another place for suit or tux rentals in or near San Francisco, CA?

We also decided to go the bought suit route. My FH and I were dead set on light grey suits and while a few places around here rent suits, none of them are light grey.

We resolved to wait until JC Penney or Kohls has a summer sale on suits (they seem to every year) and snatch them up or order online. I’ve seen some great deals on Amazon for $99 suits. We of course would have to order one first and check on the quality before having all the groomsmen buy them! ;)

We’re going with a lighter gray for all the guys. It’s not that easy to find what we were wanting. MW (Men’s Wearhouse) had absolutely NO gray suits we liked. I found the suits we wanted at S&K and then found out the store was going out of business. After it closed, the nearest store would be over two hours away. Thankfully I found the same suit at Jim’s Formal Wear. http://www.jimsformalwear.com/tux332.htm

My groom ordered suits for himself and all his groomsmen. At the time Jos. A. Bank was having a sale and it was something like buy one get two for free which worked out perfectly.

We ended up doing the suit thing, too, and were shocked to find that no one will rent suits! We asked all the guys (three total) if they would want to buy one, and since no one had a nice suit, they agreed it was the best option. We found a deal much like yours, but at Jos. A. Banks. But one suit, get TWO free. It worked out perfectly because we got the dad’s to buy suits, too. My fiance got a navy suit with pinstripes, and everyone else got plain navy suits. Score!

Someone should start a suit rental shop! Brides and grooms would be all over that!

We hit the buy one get one a few weeks ago at MW, but for work suits rather than wedding related suits. I love a well dressed man!

We bought the suits also… we bought them all at Macy’s at their after Christmas sale and got $400 suits for $150… the guys were all really happy to have a nice suit the didn’t have to rush back and return the day after the wedding.

Yikes! I hadn’t even put it together suit vs tux… looks like more research for me! Good to know though that there are sales like two-fors and stuff for suits. The one pictured is AWESOME!

we bought vest/tie combos for our groomsmen off ebay for $18 each, which turned out amazingly classy. they bought shirts that we picked out, but utilized black suits they already own. minimal expenditure, maximum WOW. i loved it!
