About Mrs. Joey

A One Ringed Wife

July 7th, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. Joey

So, after much consideration, I’ve decided to forgo the wedding ring. I’ve never been a ring girl. My fingers are short and rings just make them look shorter and fat. I’ve adjusted to wearing my engagement ring and actually feel naked without it. I thought it would be the same with a wedding band, so I wore a ring with my e-ring and it felt weird. I didn’t get used to it — it just felt like a lot on my finger and I hated the way it hid the details of my e-ring.

the details I didn’t want to cover up

I asked Mr. Joey if he cared if I skipped the wedding ring and just wore my e-ring, and he said he didn’t care. Yay! He didn’t care. I didn’t think he would. Not wearing a wedding ring won’t make us any less married.

But then, I bought a ring.
Nothing fancy. Just a set of really, really thin sterling silver stacking rings. Why? Well, I never travel (for work) with my e-ring. I don’t like to travel with expensive jewelry. I don’t want things to get stolen or lost and I always feel guilty for having something so luxurious. My ring wasn’t expensive, but I know how many people it can feed in Ethiopia or Zambia. I don’t want to ever feel permanently guilty for having it, so I try to avoid the situation entirely.

So, I bought a set of 7 stacking rings from Kate Szabone on Etsy. They are pretty but they don’t look expensive. They fill the space on my finger usually occupied by my e-ring and give people the indication that I am married. I also chose the stacking rings because if I lose a ring, I won’t be heartbroken about it. I could just add another ring, or easily replace them.

The question now is: What ring should Mr. Joey slip on my finger during the ceremony? The e-ring or the travel wedding rings? I can’t decide. Which would you choose?

The E-ring for sure! It sounds like the travel rings are just a stand-in, but the engagement ring is the more permanent symbol. Besides, you said you wouldn’t be heartbroken if you lost one of your travel rings, but not saying that about your engagement ring implies it has a high value, emotionally as well as monetarily. For all of those reasons - I think you should go with the e-ring!

That is a tricky one. I am stingy and dont want to take my ering off, even for the ceremony. i think that since the band has a little hook that fits into the ering I should wear them both the whole time.
If you are wanting to keep on your ering, you can always have him slip on a traveling band or 2. Or if you cannot bear the thought of having one of the guys holding onto your precious ering(me again) you may feel more relaxed with them having the bands..
If neither of those apply, I would maybe wait and see how you feel that day and give them what you want, or guve them everything and be surprised!!

For a while I didn’t wear my wedding ring either — I just liked the way the e-ring looked alone. I think you should do whatever you like best without worrying about what others think. You’re married either way!

Wow - I did the exact same thing! Down to the multiple different skinny bands (though mine are titanium).

I used my e-ring to get married with - it’s a ring that I will always cherish. I bought the cheap titanium bands so I can lose them, wear them gardening or swimming, and get them banged up. Which I do!

I think that your engagement ring already has a lot of meaning–it is your e-ring. If you use the stacking rings it might be nice way to give meaning to those rings, so that symbolism is also there when you travel.

I really love your idea Joey. I don’t travel with my e-ring either- it weirds some people out, but I just am so worried about losing it- but it’s a great idea to use those cute stacky rings in its place! But, I think mr joey should slip on your e-ring during the ceremony!

I would say slip on the engagement ring. =)

*sigh* I kind of want to be a one-ring bride. I just love my engagement ring, and it’s going to be hard to find a wedding band that will look good with it without breaking the bank!

However, since I’m going to be a nurse, I am (theoretically) only allowed to wear a plain wedding band, no diamonds/engraving/etc. So I kind of want one for work’s sake…but…argh. It’s all so confusing.

I’m going to go against the grain here and say stacked rings. I was thinking b/c the ering already has a meaning and using the stacking rings would give them more meaning. But then I would be more nervous about losing one… so I don’t know.
Why am I never any help with this stuff? haha

E-ring! I agree with previous posters. If you give meaning to the stacking rings, then you might not want to take THOSE to travel… it just seems like the e-ring makes more sense, since its the one you will cherish.

I love your travel stacking rings! They are beautiful and they would be very unique. You could even slip each of them with a vowel or something like that if you were having non-traditional vows … but I agree that that would defeat the purpose of not worrying about whether they get lost etc. Most importantly, going by how much your e-ring already means to you, I would go with that for sure! … I totally understand you worry about traveling with them. Sometimes when I go back home (Brazil), in certain areas, I really have to be careful (even though my ring is quite modest :-)).

Go with your e-ring.
And, by the way, I have a friend who only has an engagement ring, no wedding band. And your right, it doesn’t make you any less married.

I would say e ring if only for the ease, what if he were to drop one of the stacks! But either way I think both are really beautiful.

I also agree with the majority and say go for the e-ring. After all, they are from him for you, so it’s fitting that’s what he puts on your finger.
