About Mrs. Star

Little Puppy, Little Prince

July 7th, 2009 @ 1:16 pm by Mrs. Star

Mr. Star and I have been lucky enough to have had exactly zero wedding-related fights throughout our nearly two year engagement. This is probably because, quite frankly, Mr. Star has been the ideal groom: supportive, interested, terribly excited, and willing to let me craft the wedding into pretty much exactly what I’ve been envisioning.

So when he has an idea that he’s really got his little heart set on, I just can’t turn him down.

Enter: Etsy seller FirstComesLove. We were trolling the wedding vendors on Etsy together one night, early on in the planning stages (I did this a lot, in addition to looking at wedding-related blogs, which helped me enormously in creating a vision). We came across FirstComesLove’s ring bearer pillows, which are gorgeous. After a few clicks, Mr. Star pointed to a tiny little doggie-sized ring bearer pillow. The conversation went something like this:

Mr. Star: Aww, look how cute that is! A dog ring bearer would be adorable.

Miss Star: … Seriously?

Mr. Star: Oh, definitely. Just think about how fun it would be to have our dog there with us on our big day.

Miss Star: Yes, we do love him very much…

Mr. Star: And we don’t have any little boys in the family for ring bearer duties; we were just talking about this!

Miss Star: …

Mr. Star: The pillow is even polka-dotted (boy, does he know me).

Miss star: Welllll

I hemmed and hawed over it for a few days, wondering what people would think, what people would say. Would people judge us for being the kind of people who included their dog in their wedding party?

Then I realized how A. insecure and B. selfish I was being. Who cares what other people think, first of all? We’re getting married in a theater. If we were worried about what people might say, we’ve already blown it. And two, Mr. Star has let me do pretty much whatever I wanted to for the wedding without complaint. If he feels so strongly about a specific aspect of the wedding, then he should get his way and I will be happy about it.

So our little ring bearer will be our precious Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Duncan.

He’s an absolute love whom we rescued a little over a year ago when we were graduating from college. The funny part of that story is that we were forced to pick him up three weeks before our apartment lease began or risk not getting him, so we hid him in my tiny dorm room without getting caught for almost a month! That gives you an idea of how well-behaved he is (Shhh, don’t tell Hofstra).

We ended up buying the ring bearer pillow from Etsy, as well, and it is adorable:

Puppy Star thinks it looks like great fun to chew on, so I’m pretty sure it’s destined to become a doggie toy after the wedding! Now we’re just trying to decide if we think Puppy Star can make it down the aisle and to Mr. Star (he really, really loves Mr. Star!), or if we need to have one of Mr. Star’s brothers walk down with him.

What wedding details have you compromised on to make your mister happy? Would you ever consider having a non-standard bearer of rings? ;)

Incorporating stuff into your wedding ceremony like dogs? Awesome. I’d definitely recommend having a groomsman or usher walk him down the aisle.. the last thing you want is a run away puppy with your wedding rings!! You could even make / find a matching ribbon leash, I bet.

That is awesome! Always always always do what you want. It’s your wedding!!

Ironically, FI and I (mostly FI) have been researching dogs so we can get one once the wedding’s over and we can relax. :-) And we stumbled upon this Cavalier King Charles breed, and FI is smitten. He won’t even consider another breed of dog now. So, I selfishly am hoping for more posts that involve your sweet puppy! Duncan is a cute name too.

@Grey56: I have to say, your FI is totally spot on! He’s not my first Cav, either. I had one when I was a teenager and I used to show him. They are just the sweetest and most loving breed ever. Perfect for apartment living, too, because they’re so chill. And everyone always compliments him on how cute he is! :)

My cat Toby lived with me in the dorms (undetected!) for four months! And he is the sweetest cat ever because he was trapped in a room with lots of girls who wanted to cuddle him all day!

One of my friends also had her dog as the ring bearer. He did a great job, but her photographer was so excited about taking pictures of the dog that he took ZERO pictures of the bride walking down the aisle or the groom’s face as he watched her! He was too busy snapping photos of the dog! You may want to give your photog/videog a heads up so they don’t get distracted by all the cuteness. :)

I love your doggie ring bearer! We wanted to have our bulldog be our ring bearer (I even found him a doggie tux on Amazon for the occasion!) but the logistics were just too much. Can’t wait to see how Duncans walk down the aisle goes!

@Mrs. Tiramisu: Aww, how awesome! Ours was initially inspired by King Duncan from Shakespeare, but he ended up being “Duncan” Donut :)

Your pup is soooo cute! Wasn’t that breed one of the puppy generation characters?

@Bru: Yeah, it was! I was really torn between Miss Cavalier and Miss Star, but in the end decided that Star was more appropriate, especially since the Cavalier icon is of one with very different coloring than Puppy Star.

must. snuzzle. your. dog. oh my god he’s so cute! i love the black and brown coloring. we won’t be having a ring bearer but we are getting our pugs (4 amongst our whole family) flower collars and are going to try–emphasis on try–to take pics before the wedding (our wedding is in a hotel/restaurant and will not allow the dogs into the area. poopers.).

Our pit bulls will be in the wedding, but I don’t know if we’ll let them bear the rings. They might be confused for treatsies!

He’s adorable! I wish our pups were well-behaved enough for us to even consider for Flower Girl and Ring Bearer. *sigh* This was one of the few things FI wanted, too…but I had to let him down gently.

Very cute!

Side note: I have been researching Cavaliers for almost a year now and I think I am finally ready to dive in (in fact I visited two breeders just yesterday). Everyone tells me I won’t be disappointed. You mentioned that you rescued Duncan, from what I understood sometimes there can be waiting lists up to a few years. Which organization did you go through? Any advice?

@happy.barefoot: We rescued him from a small organization in PA, actually, that I found through Petfinder.com. Yes, Cavaliers are very hard to come by if you don’t want to shell out the big bucks at a breeder, but it’s do-able! I stalked every Cavalier within driving distance of NYC for months (much like I stalked my wedding shoes!) and finally got a call about Duncan. My best advice is to apply for as many as you can find out there through Petfinder.com and the Cavlier rescue organization and if you’re patient, one will come! Totally worth the wait, too :)

Mr. Sparkle and I are have a female Maltipoo and a male Maltese who will be our flower girl and ring bearer. We love our dogs so much, they are seriously like our children, so we both couldn’t imagine NOT having them at our wedding and in our wedding pictures. Sure, some people will think it’s a little ridiculous, especially since we’re not having children at our wedding; but it’s just that- OUR wedding. We’re going to hire a dog walker a few months ahead of time so the dogs can get used to her, and then hire her as the “dog handler” at the wedding. So excited!

Duncan is absolutely adorable! I can’t wait until we’re able to get a puppy :o) Once you figure out the logistics of including him, I think it’ll be great!

I LOVE Cavalier King Charles Spaniels! Duncan is absolutely adorable and I’m so happy to read that you patiently waited to rescue him. :-D After reading this, I now wish I had my dog when we got married so he could’ve participated!
