The Dude and I spent a full day at the outlet malls in San Marcos (about a half hour from Austin) looking for wedding day accessories for him. For awhile we were panicked about the suit he had planned to wear. It belonged to my dad (who was super skinny), and we thought the pants weren’t going to fit at first. But the Dude tried them on again, and it turns out that he just needed to pull them up higher; I guess vintage ’70s suits were made to sit a little higher up on your waist. We took them to a tailor, who said she could let out the waist a bit and let out the material at the bottom to make the pants longer. We got lucky, and there’s at least 4 inches of material that can be let out!
With the suit out of the way, we still needed to find the Dude a shirt, shoes, and a tie. We got really lucky with the shoes yesterday. Our first stop at Neiman Marcus Last Call yielded up these beautiful, Italian leather vintage-y kicks. The Dude and I both loved them, so we snatched them up. Don’t you just love how the color darkens at the toe? I think they’ll look perfect with the purple and gray socks we bought.

The shirt was another story altogether.
We went to no fewer than eight stores, scouring each one for a white button-up shirt in a light, flowy material that actually fit the Dude. He needed something with a modern, slim fit, as the vest and jacket he’ll be wearing are very slim-fitting. The shirt he already has bunched up, and looked funky when he tried it on with the suit. We were about to give up for the day, when we stumbled upon the perfect shirt at the J. Crew outlet. It’s called the “tailored fit”. Good thing we found it, too, because I was thisclose to making him buy a woman’s shirt called the “boyfriend fit”. Luckily, we didn’t have to resort to that!
The only real disappointment of the day was not finding any ties. I’d wanted to find one for the Dude and one for each of his groomsmen, since that is part of the gift he’ll be giving them. Unfortunately, the outlet malls just did not have a huge selection of skinny ties. The Dude and I both like the skinny tie look (as long as it’s not taken too far).
This one looks a little anorexic, no?
See, the skinny tie really is vintage, not modern!
When we got home, I did a quick internet search for affordable skinny ties, and I found this site. OMG, we can get three black skinny ties for the groomsmen for $12 each? Yes, please! As for what the Dude will wear, I checked Etsy and found this great vintage tie—we’re pretty sure the seller took a wider tie and sewed the sides down to make it skinnier. It’s perfect!
Do you have any good resources for skinny ties? Do you know of any eco-friendly tie sources?
