About Mrs. Mary Jane

A Carnivorous Main Course

July 8th, 2009 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Mary Jane

I spoke a little with FMIL over the weekend, and she’s made some progress on planning the picnic they’re throwing for us the weekend after our wedding. The biggie: She’s booked a caterer, which means we’ve got the beginnings of a menu!

The main courses being served? BBQ ribs and pork roast.

Yes, we’ll be smearing our faces, hands (and let’s face it: shirts) with sticky, gooey, dark red barbecue sauce as we gnaw on rib bones at our reception.

Mr. MJ and I definitely approve. This is the upper Midwest, and this is an outdoor, rural picnic. No portobello pastas or spinach salad up in here! Around here, we are meat and potatoes. I used to live on thew West Coast, and I tend to joke that if a vegan friend were to visit me here in North Dakota, they’d die of starvation within the week. Since this is going to be a buffet/potluck event where people will eat what they want and bypass what they don’t, we’re not worried about selecting different entrees or offering menu selections. As with any large family-and-friends gathering: if you come, you can eat. If you don’t wanna eat, then you don’t have to!

There are sides and other dishes offered by the caterer as well, but the FILs aren’t yet sure what additional items we’ll be getting. They’re planning to go taste some of the offerings and make a decision based on their experience.

The rest of the menu will likely include egg salad or potato salad, chips, dips, buns, desserts, and (of course) cake.

I’m really thankful for all the thought and planning FMIL is putting in to this event, and I’m trying to be careful not to step on her toes or take over the planning process. We’re both really excited for this fun and fabulous event to happen!

Is any aspect of your big day being planned almost entirely by someone else? Are you excited for the end result, a little freaked out by their choices, or both? Would you dare eat something as messy as ribs at your reception?

Mr Frenchie wanted BBQ for our reception SO BAD. I kept saying I would do BBQ as long as there was a fork and knife option b/c I am clumsy and never I would end up w/ BBQ sauce on my dress. He will be SO JEALOUS when I tell him what your having.
As for something being planned entirely by someone else, the only thing I can think of is our morning after brunch… but that is really more my parents thing than ours.

Yummm. I ate my own weight in grilled ribs yesterday. They’re such a treat. Why don’t we make them more often?

Yes, this picture makes me really really drooly for ribs, I am eating healthy “live” sprouted granola with rice yogurt … haha. Healthy food = boo.

I ate BBQ ribs at my wedding reception! They were delicious! We had corn on the cob, roasted potatoes and macaroni and cheese. We also served fried chicken and cornmeal crusted catfish. My guests loved it!

I have a cookbook from the Midwest (where I grew up), that has a section labeled “Vegetarian Soups”. I was having friends over, some of whom do not eat red meat, so I chose a recipe for corn chowder from there. I got to the market before I realized one of the ingredients was BACON. Apparently, in the Midwest, as long as the main ingredient isn’t meat, the item itself is vegetarian. You have to love it!

I’m hungry now! My parents are planning the welcome BBQ, so I have absolutely no control (skeery!)

But I know my dad sourced some VERY excellent beef from where he lives in Montana, so I feel like I’m in good hands!

We’re having BBQ at our wedding reception. I also live in the Midwest. It’s something that my fiance and I really enjoy eating together. I don’t care that it isn’t your typical fancy wedding food. Not only is BBQ delicious, but it is also very budget friendly.

So tasty–makes my tummy rumble. It sounds like what we’re serving at our reception–we’ll have BBQ pork and fried chicken, with the all-important mac n’ cheese. Your guests will be so excited (and full)!

And Miss Cowboy Boot, I too will be eating it with my dress on!
