Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, nonprofit communications Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!
About Mrs. D'orsay

Personal training, that is. Although I’ve recently had great success with weight loss, I’ve pretty much plateau-ed since returning home. My cousin (and BM) and I decided to start buddy training with each other and our new personal trainer - Robert. We chose to train with Robert because of the crazy success of some of his past clients. I don’t mean the kind you see on an infomercial; I’m talking about people I actually know - a friend from my high school who lost over 50lbs since January, or Robert’s own younger brother who, no joke, completely transformed his physique over the course of a year. I wish I had before/after photos of these guys to show the hive, because you can’t help but be impressed.

Buddy training has been pretty great for my cousin and me. We are teammates, there to push each other along and we root for each other. There are even several exercises which are more fun to do with a friend, like medicine ball squats! I thought Jilian pushed me hard, but I had no idea! I can honestly tell you that in all my years of dance, rugby, and soccer, I’ve never worked as hard in one hour as I have with Robert. We’ve been doing resistance training 3 times a week, but I know I need to step up my cardio game on the off days if I want to hit my goal weight by the wedding. Going practically every other day also helps me stay on target with my dietary goals. Have you ever visited a personal trainer and had a hangover? It’s a bad idea, and reminds you to just say no to those liquid calories.

Buddy training also inspires me to work harder.

There are the occasional exercises that count on one of us doing XX number before the other can finish - for example, one does 20 ball/wall squats while the other does as many burpees/jumpees as they can. Sure, this may cause you to temporarily hate or curse your buddy, but you get over it quickly.

Have you considered a personal trainer? Do you have a training buddy? What or who is your biggest exercise motivator?

Personal trainers can’t be beat! Yes they are expensive but I just don’t have the motivation to do it alone. Their knowledge and technique gets you where you want to be much faster!

Right before I read this post I updated my twitter to: “already dreading bridal boot camp tonight.” It’s twice a week and there are only three other girls taking it with me, but it’s so unbelievably hard! And I’m like you, not immune to working out. There’s something to be said, I think, by having someone working out next to you by motivating you. Good job and keep it up!!

For a while I met with a personal trainer once a week, and then I repeated the workout twice more that week. It went pretty well, but on the days when it was just me, I never quite pushed myself as hard. So I joined a workout class that met 4 times a week. It was a small morning class but it was great and I pushed myself the whole time.
Good job!!

I hired a trainer before we got engaged and LOVE it. I’ve never been pushed so hard in my life! I meet with her once a week and then do strength training twice a week on my own. I’ve got to kick the cardio up a notch or two though and as we’re getting closer to the big day. The love of my life has been great in helping me get moving when all I want to do is surf wedding blogs. :)

I have a personal trainer and I WISH I had a buddy. Mr Frenchie used to go w/ me, but when he moved farther away from the gym, he stopped going :(

I don’t have a personal trainer, but I have Tae Kwon Do instructors - some days I can barely drag myself to my car to get home. My friends and class make it helpful to get through the hundreds of kicks and punches we have to go through.

Yep! I used a personal trainer for awhile. Mainly to learn new workouts & weight, as my problem was that I get BORED way too easily at the gym. It was a very, very worthwhile investment!

My mom is my buddy and her two sisters are buddies in our class. So it has been fun getting to know them better and it gives me motivation to go just so I can catch up with them. On my off days I go to the gym with my FI which is a nice change in pace. I haven’t lost weight in the year of training but I haven’t gained. I was gaining 5lbs a year so this is good to keep the weight stable. I have actually built muscle tone in my arms, abs and legs. So I’m excited about that because my dress is strapless! Good luck to everyone oout there working hard

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I been following your posts and meaning to respond because I live in Columbia too…but today I HAD to respond—-I work with Robert’s Mother at Jeffers Hill! How hilarious! I just emailed her the link to the post–she’d be so proud to see her son’s gym featured on a national blog. Hope you continue to enjoy your workouts! It’s amazing how interconnected as a society we really are!
