The Bees’ Transportation Budgets

July 8th, 2009 @ 1:10 pm by Real Budgets

Here’s a peek into how some of the bees transported themselves and their guests to their weddings! Be sure to take a look at the rest of the posts in our Real Bee Budgets series!

~~~
Mrs. Flamingo’s Transportation
Mode: Rental of one Vintage 1957 Bentley to transport Bride and Groom.
Price: $425
Both Mr. Flamingo and I have big families, therefore it was impossible to rent a limo big enough to fit everyone. At the same time, we both loved the idea of having a vintage ride to fit our theme. For the amount of time we were in the car, I’m glad we didn’t splurge on transportation… though a bus could have been a neat idea. ;)
————————-
Mrs. Penguin’s Transportation
Mode: 2 Charter buses for transportation of guests from hotel to winery and back
Vendor: Garrett Transportation, Cameron Park, CA
Price: $1200 for 1/2 day rental of both buses
I’m so glad we were able to provide transportation for our guests. Not only did it ensure that all the guests arrived on time for the ceremony, all at once, but it also gave us peace of mind that no one would drink and drive, and that everyone could enjoy as many glasses of wine as they wanted. After all, it was a winery wedding! Mr. Penguin and I took the last bus back with our guests.
————————-
Mrs. Sushi’s Transportation
Mode: 1 charter bus for transportation of guests from their hotels to Temple, Temple to luau, luau back to their hotels.
Vendor: Hickam ITT
Price: $405 for 9 hours, Hickam, HI
We were all over the island on our wedding day, so I really wanted to provide transportation for our OOT guests, especially since most were visiting Hawaii for the first time and didn’t know their way around. I had gotten quotes from 4 different transportation vendors and they were all quoting around $700-$900. It was my dad (retired military), who suggested I call the military travel center and ask if they provide vans or buses. Wouldn’t you know, they do! And for half the price!! We originally booked a van for 14 people, but on the day of our wedding they supplied us with a 37 passenger charter. We had the bus pick up our guests at their hotels, equaling 4 hotel pick ups in all. Our guests were very grateful that they didn’t have to worry about finding our wedding venue or the luau. Mr. Sushi rode to the ceremony with the guests. I rode with friends. We took the bus back to the hotels with our guests at the end of the night.
Mrs Peony’s Transportation
Mode 1: Charter Bus: 49 passenger deluxe motor coach for 7.5 hours
Vendor: BusBank
Price: $935 + 10% gratuity
Shuttled guests from NYC hotel to our venue in Westchester, which was 20 minutes away. The bus waited on property at our venue, and shuttled guests back to the hotel at the end of the reception.
I was very happy with our charter bus company. Our rep was polite and very prompt with responses, and although the bus arrived to our venue almost an hour late, that was no fault on their part because the Pope was in town and there was crazy traffic in NYC. My advice for anyone getting a charter bus is to overestimate on time.
Mode 2: Limousine: 14-passenger Cadillac DeVille for $690 + gratuity
Vendor: Double Diamond Limousines
Shuttled the bridal party (bride, groom, 4 bridesmaids, 4 groomsmen, and 2 photographers for a total of 12 people) from the hotel to Central Park where we took our pre-wedding photos. The limo waited for us until we were finished, then it drove us to our venue in Westchester.
Our DOC Christine Viola recommended Double Diamond to us, and we couldn’t have been happier. Not only did they have the best prices, they were prompt and courteous, and it was obvious that the driver was very experienced with weddings.
Mode 3: Bentley: 1957 Classic Bentley Saloon with original right hand steering
Vendor: Double Diamond Limousines
Price: $300 + gratuity
Drove the bride and groom from the venue in Westchester to our hotel in NYC after the festivities were over.
I had asked Mr Peony to book us a Town Car to take us back to the hotel after the reception, and he got us a Bentley as a surprise! He also coordinated with my bridesmaids so that they could decorate the car especially for us.
————————-
Mrs. Tiramisu’s Transportation
Mode: Trolley from York Trolley Company
Price: $325 + tip (for approximately 3.5 hours)
Transported bride, groom, plus 28 bridal party/family members to and from reception venue/church (3 round trips)
“Riding a trolley through the center of busy York, Maine in prime tourist season was beyond fun. The open windows may have not been the best idea, as we ended up a bit windblown, but it was totally worth it.”
An ecomonical solution for those of us who don’t care what we arrive in as long as you get there is if a friend or family member has an RV you could borrow it for the day. My FSIL and FBIL used one for there wedding party and it was great and a lot of fun!
For those who want an economical option for chartering a bus (and have a sense of humor!), check out school bus rentals. We’re renting 2 school buses for 50% more time at a third of the cost of the coaches or trolleys!
Thanks for the amazing post as always! It’s great to know what I can expect when asking for price quotes for transportation.
Tifnicole - that is a great idea! We rented a charter bus for transport ALL guests since it is a brewery wedding, but were able to negotiate the price to $500 + tax for 4 - 11 on a Saturday in September.
Just an FYI about a free option I read in a book and am going to do
Do you have a small bridal party? under 5 on each side? Do you know people who own minivans?
You can find 2 people to lend you their van and their time. You can made it the “bridal party van”! haha
Not as amazing as a limo..but we couldn’t afford that and it’s better than people driving themselves.
So we have 2 minivans that will be driving the men and the woman. I lucked out and my mom’s husband is into old cars and has a wonderful 51 ford that he will drive us in for free.
So just a tip…if you are broke like us and something fancy like this is so outta budget…..consider mini vans! :-)
Thanks for the post- finding a cool vintage car is proving to be one of the tougher challenges we’re facing for our wedding. Who knew it’d be so difficult to rent a car for a day!?!
I missed contributing to this one because we were traveling, but here are our details:
Vendor: Harlow’s Bus Company, Kalispell, MT
Vehicles: Two full-sized yellow school buses
Cost: $370 total, for 52 miles driven and 8 hours holding each bus
We provided school buses to shuttle our guests from the Lake McDonald Lodge and Apgar Village hotels to Polebridge and back at the end of the night. We provided enough seating for everyone who RSVPd that they would like to ride the bus. However, very few guests actually used the buses and they mostly became private chariots for the wedding party. Mr. CP and his groomsmen rode in one bus and I rode in the other bus with my bridesmaids and mother.
I can only say good things about Harlow. The rentals were not only affordable but the service was also excellent.
And, we got some fabulous photographs on the bus, in the bus, and with the bus!
We don’t really have transportation costs since everything is one place so I didn’t add to this post. But I just remembered that there is a FREE shuttle back and forth from one of our hotels if people aren’t staying at the location. So that is a nice convenience!
